Great content as always, a new DDG video in my feed means its gonna be a good day. It is always fun changing a variable and witnessing the same outcome. I was in a similar situation for months with my Mustang not wanting to idle. It finally runs and idles now after repeating the same song and dance (clean carb, check timing, check spark plugs, check vacuum leaks, check duraspark box, etc) and although I'm happy about, it bothers me that I don't know exactly *what* it was that made it run better. I am starting to believe that the Machine Spirit is a real thing and that I must appease the Omnissiah to make my junk run right.

Hi Jamie, I’ve built 2 Megasquirt systems and have had frustrations at times… 1- cranking/RPM signal is extremely extremely sensitive to picking up noise. Always use shielded wire. Even then, routing may have to be played with. I had to relocate my last setup to the other side of the engine completely. I am VERY suspect of the CDI box anywhere near the EFI. 2- knowing fuel pressure is a must. I would have a gauge directly in your regulator while troubleshooting 3-My starter was causing excessive noise to my Megasquirt crank signal. Having your power wire on the starter is probably a huge problem. I would take the time to route it directly to the battery 4-play with your grounds. Move them, clean them… whatever. Just try it 5-Is your MAP sensor reading in absolute pressure? I thought I saw it reading 14 psi when you had it on, but not running. I would check to verify. 14 psi would then be correct, because, you know…. Science 😊
@DeadDodgeGarageАй бұрын
Yes, definitely showing atmospheric pressure on the map so it must be. Agreed on other points. And I added a temporary gauge to verify fuel pressure while I wait for the permanent one to arrive.
@mikegreen2229Ай бұрын
@@DeadDodgeGarageSweet. I think you’ll get it. It’s a pretty basic system. I moved my crank wiring a few times and kept getting similar results. Then, as a last ditch effort, I ran the ENTIRE crank signal wire though the passenger window of the car as far as possible from everything and THAT proved my theory. It’s very irritating. Also, you ARE correct that a wideband can read lean when it is excessively rich. You can find stuff online about it. The AFR reading is only accurate within a certain window

A slant six is a great engine on road, in water and on industrial / agricultural applications. on that setup something is terribly wrong, not only a small vacuum leak When I was young, I made and ran many carburetor setups including2 and 4 barrel production carburetors so not widely customisable and never I had such a problem, to be you must return to the basics and redo the tune of the engine. a basic electronic lab scope would be of a great help here as I suspect something is not doing its job on the ignition side of the system (remember, 2 different injection systems and always the same trouble)

One of the best pieces of advice he ever gave me was when something refuses to respond to what should fix it and the frustration starts was to walk away from whatever it was for a bit. Then no matter how convinced I was I knew what was wrong and what was needed to fix said vehicle to have a good think about it again starting at square one. It seems you've learned this lesson as well over the years and I have no doubt you'll figure it out or as they say just start throwing parts at it. Which will work it just ends up costing more than we ever want our projects to in the end. This is a very cool build and I'm looking forward to the day when you can just hit the key and go for a cruise, although not as much as you are probably. Take care and God Bless...

Let me try to put your mind at rest about those aluminum electron beam factory manifolds. Some of them were porous, actually a lot of them were. Those got fixed under warranty when they were new. My Dad was a Chrysler Dealer mech for 100 years, starting about 1913 or something. If a slant 6 came with a porous manifold, it almost never went on the lot without being remedied. If one snuck out somehow, the customer invariably brought it back and hollared until it was taken care of. Especially if it was a Leanburn Super 6 2bbl. They didn't develop MORE leaks as time passed, so the likelihood that you've got a porosity problem with your manifold based on it's original design is pretty dang small. My Dad said that after swapping leaky intakes on a few new Slants, they just started masking the the engine bay with cardboard and wadded up newspaper and spraying the manifold with genuine Mopar engine enamel in the handy 12oz aerosol can with the engine idling. The vacuum would suck the paint into the leaks and dry from the heat almost instantly. Any remaining leaks just got a send shot from the rattle can. The unused 1bbl replacement manifolds lay around for years until getting scrapped. The extra 2bbl manifolds were highly sought after for everyones old Slant 6 powered daily. A BBD and breatherfrom a 318 and you had a nice 15% boost in power. A WIN-WIN!

I wouldn't form an EFI opinion from a hack. Not setting fuel pressure (EFI 101), wiring the ECU feed to the starter (worst place you could possibly wire to), using a leaky DIY intake manifold, not fixing an unreliable ignition system, etc. I had a Megasquirt car that ran perfectly fine 20+ years ago. Love your channel- FWIW I've installed several Snipers and every time there has been an issue like you describe (O2 shows lean, everthing else indicates rich) it has been an issue with exhaust leaks or O2 placement. There can't be ANY leaks upstream of the O2 sensor or within 20" or so PAST the sensor because reversion will pull in air at the leak and the O2 will read lean and the system just keeps dumping in more fuel to try and resolve the lean condition. I have an Opel GT that has the intake/exhaust on the same side and a similar bolt arrangement and it is really hard to get those to seal where they don't have exhaust leaks that trip up the O2 Sensor. Since you had the same issues on two different EFI systems- Its not the EFI. Good luck and don't give up- my Sniper runs great after resolving the exhaust leaks I had (had to go to V-Bands upstream of the O2 sensor and not the band type clamps).
@DeadDodgeGarage28 күн бұрын
I'm hip to that. It's close to the end of the pipe currently, but I was running it with an extra extension to see if it made a difference. It didn't. There are no exhaust leaks that I can hear, but there is still slight staining around one of the ports - because slant six manifolds are terrible. That, combined with terrible fuel distribution and the MSD issue I found, probably explain most of what's going on.

Not trying to be hash but you cannot short cut EFI wiring or instructions. I have been doing EFI conversions and tuning for 20 years. That being said that manifold is terrible for a TBI style EFI. I did a GM TBI conversion on both a 292 I6 and a Mercruiser 3.7L 4 cylinder. The 4bbl TBI unit you have needs the primary barrels as far away from the cylinder head as possible to improve the fuel distribution and vaporization. Same goes for a 4bbl carb on an inline engine. Vacuum is critical to proper operation of a speed density EFI system. Loss of vacuum through leaks will cause the MAP sensor to read as if the engine is under load and cause a major overfueling issue. Once you get the ECM issue figured out, put the Clifford manifold on and install that TBI with the primary barrels away from the cylinder head on the outer side of the manifold. Even if you put a carb on it I would install that Clifford manifold. It is obvious to me you have a major fuel distribution issue with that converted manifold. The Clifford manifolds have great air/fuel distribution with the carburetor or EFI system installed correctly. On the 292 and 3.7L I used a water heated adapter. The Clifford manifold on the 292 had a Holley Projection 4150 to 2" TBI adapter. The 3.7L had the stock Q-Jet to 2" TBI manifold adapter for an 80s 454. Intake manifold heat was very important in getting the fuel to burn well with a TBIs relative lack of atomization compared to a carbs venturis.
@DeadDodgeGarageАй бұрын
There is no question I have a terrible fuel distribution issue. Explain to me why the Atomic behaved nothing like this, wired exactly the same, on the same manifold. It started like ass (MSD issue I have since diagnosed, I think) and had a pronounced hesitation when the throttle was opened. Stalled when idling down cold. But it otherwise idled fairly nicely and could kinda sorta be driven. I fully understand how MAP sensors work - which is why I was hunting for vacuum leaks.

Pretty dang good video/story. All along I was waiting for the end to comment that you needed a stable voltage supply for your 6AL MSD box, MSD injection system and then the ACES EFI box. But then you figured it out. Yea all those electrical boxes uses a stable voltage supply to send voltages out to the sensors and then reads the return (or something to that effect), without a stable voltage supply the returns from the sensors are not accurate(precise) enough for the boxes to control what to do next. Due to the varying voltage supply the MSD 6AL box is probably just missing a signal here or there from the distributor causing the missing, thus fouling the plugs. Love the build and might do one like the same in this lifetime.

My assumption was that the only time the voltage drop would be an issue was during cranking, and that given the size of my battery lead, the difference between voltage at the battery and voltage there wouldn’t be much. What was particularly odd to me is that simply running the power for the 6A to the battery suddenly made the timing markedly more advanced during cranking. Which led me to understand that this was likely my main problem the whole time. I didn’t think it was related to my hard starting problem because the box was triggering the Atonic system with a tach signal, meaning the box was powered up and should have been doing its thing. But I guess it wasn’t.

$600 seems pretty reasonable for this EFI kit. Comes with everything. I hope it works out.

I’ve had a couple of very lengthy misadventures involving those MSD boxes, the fix was going back to a stock electronic ignition box until you can get everything else working. Also I hope you’re not running solid core plug wires, not sure if they still make those but they will interfere with CDI in a bad way. Good luck and keep living the dream for our amusement!!!
@DeadDodgeGarageАй бұрын
No solid cores. I think the MSD box is the center of the problem. That, or how I had wired it…

Tried the aces kill shot on my fury. I couldn’t get it to run to save my life. Then went to the original style sniper. Ran great for 7 months before it took a shit. Only had a three month warranty. Finally went edelbrock AVS 2 on your recommendation in your videos and it’s been great. Maybe one suggestion I could make is as long as as one of those units has an IAC and TPS you can save 700$ and utilize it as a throttle body when you go to MPFI. That’s what I did with the sniper on my other non mopar car. Good luck!

I think I’m going to hang on to the Atomic for exactly that, when the time comes.

The turbo efi works. I run a sub par FiTech system on my 67 Newport with a turbo. It works pretty good after the tinkering. It also runs the ign timing. I’m not sure on ACE but on Fi I can adjust prime shot, start up, after start, and warm up fuel all independently. It takes a bit but I got it to hit like a modern OEM in any weather from 90 above to -15. Make sure you have no exhaust leaks prior to the oxygen sensor, that will give it false lean readings and run super rich. Also on the Fi, I had to adjust the IAC reading at idle on set up. I did that by adjusting the throttle blade idle screw. Once again idk if ACE has such procedures but as a guy that takes short cuts without directions. Not following them to the T bit me too. Don’t give up on it, it just takes time.

Yep. All of that is adjustable, which is what I was messing with right before I broke it.

Location & angle of the spark plug can have quite an effect on flame front propagation at light-off, which effects completion of fuel burning and power produced. Also: I don't know why, but for some reason, Mopars prefer a .038" spark gap versus the factory. It helped my '88 I-4 Caravan get 20-mpg.avg. Of course, I later had to switch to an Accel coil, MSD Super Conductor wires, and a HD replacement cap/rotor, just to save myself from going back and re-gapping them about once a month... but you get the idea.

I feel your frustration, but keep going. You'll figure it out. Giving up never results in progress. It does pique my curiosity that both efi systems seem to suffer from the same problem. Intermittent voltage issues? Good luck, we all want you to realize your dream.

Sorry I missed the Live... did watch this in interest. Surprised a new system would be such a pain in the a**. Thanks for the history on the Atomic system... have a Pro-Jection 2D that I'd like to stick on a SBC. Told "worked when removed"... now am much more sceptical. Keep at it. All the right moves so far. Once the system learns and the intake leaks taken care of, should run better... intake was washed pretty clean from fuel under the atomic - so it was rich despite the Air/Fuel ratio reported. Take it easy

Hey Jamie. I normally do not post comments. I feel your frustration with this. I thoroughly enjoy your channel, keep it up! I will share my experience with the MSD Atomic and the Sniper. 1st hard lesson - do not skimp on the wiring or believe that NOT wiring anything the manuf says directly to the battery is a good idea. This includes the grounds. In fact put more grounds...everywhere. I have had use the conservative approach for wiring. For cable sizing i've been using Bluesea Systems Circuit Wizard to donthis as it sizes the wire larger than for a land based system. 2nd try your hardest to not touch the throttle when starting. I know it's frustrating when it won't start without touching it! 3rd build the engine map without boost, then add the boost. I was really looking forward to your step-by-step upgrades to the I6. Anyway, hope my comments help you even in a small way. Looking fwd to the next posting!

Regarding the voltage question, you could put something small like a motorcycle battery (or a big battery on the ground) to power that unit. Quite the adventure you are having.Thanks for letting us follow along!
@DeadDodgeGarageАй бұрын
I thought about that. Almost put my jump box in the engine compartment just for that. Whatever I use would need to be grounded to the engine still. And that’s as far as I got.

@@DeadDodgeGarageIt'd make sense to me to just put the battery in the passenger floor & loop the heater core hose under the hood to temp fix 2 issues easily. Then get it running good. Later fix those things right.

I pursued Throttle body efi for my own car and many customer over the years. I settled on the Sniper 2, I wasn't thrilled about the holley's internal ecu but found the Sniper2 to give me no issues on the dozen I've installed and they really are workable with just the terrible touchscreen they come with. I have one on my personal turbo Ford motor and am super happy with it, I like how you can use the base calibration wizard for a boosted or power adder application and be up and running without a custom tune immediately. With the issues you seem to be having I wonder if you are having either a strange voltage drop problem to the EFI or are you having some kind of spark issue, maybe rpm signal even. Those super long and hard starts are not indicative of most of these systems I have used, normally they are overly rich everywhere so they start and then dial back once they hit the learning temperature. On every single one of these systems I have used I have had to add a main relay to turn the system on, key on/crank power in an old car is usually limited to one wire that you don't want to wire directly to the EFI so I use that wire instead to trigger a relay. It may be worth your sanity to very temporarily install a simple 4 barrel carburetor with like a gravity feed fuel system and verify the engine will repeatable and happily start and rev before moving back to the EFI diagnostics. In my own pursuit of these projects I have easily gotten in my own way by thinking I know something is working and writing it off to diagnose a more complicated problem thats being made worse by something much more simple. Does the engine have healthy cranking compression? will the engine run naturally aspirated? is the entire ignition timing curve in the ball park? Every EFI system I have installed has always gone better when I started with a smooth running engine. Thanks for reading my Editorial, I hope something here helps you. God Speed.
@DeadDodgeGarageАй бұрын
I think it’s at least two things together, and I think you’re probably right on with the extra relay. Occasionally the screen was powering off during cranking, but when that was happening it would still fire.

Well you are saving me a lot of frustration and expense. I was seriously considering an Atomic system or an Aces system for the the 83 Challenger. The fact that it starts after a single pump, idles perfectly as well as no bog when I floor it means I'll stay carburetor for the foreseeable future. Besides, a carburetor on top of a blower is super cool. I look forward to more updates though. The whole distributor to MSD box thing intrest me. I've gotta learn more about that.
@DeadDodgeGarageАй бұрын
Oh yeah. Triggering the MSD with a stock electronic distributor is no problem, as long as you get the wires flipped the right way. (It always, ALWAYS takes me two tries.) I would definitely keep your carburetor…
