Honestly, you don't have to be smart to learn skills and useful knowledge, it just makes it easier. Lots of stupid people just like us do important and complex jobs every day, and not being as smart as some people are shouldn't discourage you from trying things and innovating. But if you aren't smart, and you try to do something like this, be sure to film it, so that it pays off either way

@@nateel86 It's really not money that's the problem, it's IP law and the regulatory apparatus. We're sold this idea of IP laws and regulations protecting the little guy, but they end up doing the opposite and protecting established players from competition by new entries into the market. This is why he released it for free I would imagine. The tech would never see the light of day otherwise, and he would never be able to make any money off of it. Auto industry would bury him if he did. A good guy to listen to talk about this is Joerg Sprave on the slingshot channel. He's actually a patent attorney and he was like, "no way am I going to benefit from patenting this technology (about his Instant Legolas repeating bow design), so I just release it as prior art into the public domain so that people can enjoy it." Paraphrasing there of course.

With a more refined version, you would not even need to flick a switch - The Valve profile could be adjusted on the fly based on throttle input. But that would probably either take some *really* clever modelling or a *lot* more refinement - probably even both.

I would agree that this is the most significant thing in automotive development at the moment. Everything else I hear is yet more ideas for variable valve timing, all of which are overly complicated and still limited in capability. This can do literally anything, the tunability, performance, and economy possibilities are endless. This is a revolution, both for OEM car development and retrofit onto old cars - especially if it could be cheaper than a performance cam, which I'd imagine would be more expensive than the "nice exhaust system" he compares this budget to. I think of this as being like the switch from carburetors to electronic fuel injection, which is now universal on OEM applications and quite common retrofitted on classic cars, through things like Megasquirt. I have converted my classic Beetle to EFI in this manner, and I'm looking forward to installing this on it.

Computer could adjust valve timing on the fly, one map for maximum torque/horsepower another map for maximum fuel economy. Ecu that could optimize timing and even be able to run different fuels by measuring o2 readings. If ecu could measure torque generated by motor in real time it could really adjust to make max hp, with a good learning algorithm of course.

If I am understanding everything correctly it's not overly hard (relatively speaking) to make a system to open a valve via pneumatics, the issue arises in the closing of the valves. A valve is meant to ramp closed and without that the valve smashes into the valve seat every time it shuts. I could be completely wrong but if I am not then both the valves and the valve seats will be wearing out at a rapid rate on this engine. I am open to correction here.

@@100PercentJake Seeing as the air solenoid version *should* have all the valves closed when air isn't being supplied / is inadequate, having an interference engine shouldn't be an issue with cranking to start. The scarier part is cranking an engine with a belt-driven oil pump for that long imo.

I would probably run the small compressor he already has in tandem with an A/C compressor converted to an air compressor. Pair that with a decent sized (I'm not really smart enough to know what size would be best) air tank and have the electric pump set up to only run when the tank is below (insert pressure here) and let the engine driven one do what it does.

Hear me out. You need to build a 2 stroke engine with an intake valve in the head, an exhaust port in the cylinder and a supercharger. The full valve control of your "freevalve" would allow you to have proper idle thanks to the atkinson cycle and open the intake at the right time to flush the chamber without blowing tons of air fuel mixture into the exhaust at all rpm and loads, allowing you to acually run boost unlike the detroit diesels for example. So much more power to weight than a 4 stroke but much better than conventional 2 strokes in terms of: 1) less oil in the combustion chamber as there is a wet sump instead of premix and the oil lost at the port gous straight into the exhaust 2) proper idle instead of just firering every coule of revolutions 3) real supercharging, centrifugals can efficiently run over 40psi And with mazdas new skyactiv x cylinder pressure sensors got much cheaper and it would be possible to implement them to tune the engine by computing bmep on every stroke instead of having to use a dyno. This way you can have software run the engine with the goal to maximise bmep and do minor changes on individual strokes instead of the slow process of changing valve timing and doing another dyno run to test the changes.

You just described a large slow speed marine engine. Look up the Watrsila Flex series to see what it looks like in the real world. Of course we do the intake in the liner and exhaust in the head. Unifow scavenging of combustion gas is great way to exchange your combustion air.

There have been attempts at 2 stroke engines using intake valves before eliminating the need for a reed valve or piston ported setup and gives you more engine building leeway not having to worry about bottom end compression and transfer timing. There are also a few attempts at a low emission oil injected 2stroke which operates like a four stroke in the way that the piston skirt is oiled but no oil or small amounts make it past the rings into the combustion chamber

Awesome build! I’m a piano technician and have rebuild several player pianos. The pneumatic systems involved here is strikingly similar to a player piano, except that that system is based on vacuum. Your software is the stand in for the roll of paper with little perforations that slide across a tracker bar. When the holes in the paper align with a hole in the tracker bar it allows atmosphere to trip a small leather “solenoid” valve and unleash the vacuum into a hinged pneumatic activating a note. This video and this guy is underrated. This is a new open door for performance engines, You sir have just showed us that it is possible without millions of dollars to have a freevalve engine and it allows us to eliminate camshafts thus allowing most of us to rev our engines past the fabled 10,000 rpm that most performance engines cant even get to.

22:53 a rotary?;) Is that a joke? Thanks so much for making your design open source. Not for me, but for all the people who will build and improve this. Absolutely amazing success getting this to work!

Not linear or V-shaped, but rotary, where the 6 cylinders are arranged in a hexagonal manner, and were used on airplanes 100 years ago...
@stefans6658

@@klausbrinck2137 that's radial engine, rotary is wankel with triangle shaped 'pistons'. I think the point was he wants to test it on everything. Some rotary engine actually have valves many 2 strokes have valves and they are quite efficient.

@@stefans6658 Well, out of other comments, I figured out that a radial engine were meant. Except of it, I´ve heard many people naming radial engines "rotary", and it is false, but never the less, still happens sometimes. He doesn´t clarify, so maybe it were a joke, after all, but freevalve is needed in radial engines more than in any other cylinder-configuration, on the other side...

The rotary engine was an early type of internal combustion engine, usually designed with an odd number of cylinders per row in a radial configuration, in which the crankshaft remained stationary in operation, with the entire crankcase and its attached cylinders rotating around it as a unit. Its main application was in aviation, although it also saw use before its primary aviation role, in a few early motorcycles and automobiles.

I'd like to think that Koenigsegg's engineers are just as impressed as the rest of us, if not more. If their only focus was money, the Gemera (an absolute masterpiece) would never have existed.

LOL. I'm here to borrow it to put it on an obscure 2.2 Chrysler turbo platform. The Lotus/Lamborghini/Chrysler twin cam that has major timing belt issues. It wouldn't have belt issues without cams, would it? :D

Now that you have released all that data for free, just remember that many people would still pay you for a kit. Some just like things ready to go out of the box! This is brilliant, and you could certainly make a meaningful impact by producing this technology

14:30 To compress the valve spring without dropping the valve, fill the cylinder with compressed air through the spark plug hole. I've done it a dozen times. Adapter hoses from 14mm thread to air hose chuck are readily available.
