With a more refined version, you would not even need to flick a switch - The Valve profile could be adjusted on the fly based on throttle input. But that would probably either take some *really* clever modelling or a *lot* more refinement - probably even both.
@quillmaurer65633 жыл бұрын
I would agree that this is the most significant thing in automotive development at the moment. Everything else I hear is yet more ideas for variable valve timing, all of which are overly complicated and still limited in capability. This can do literally anything, the tunability, performance, and economy possibilities are endless. This is a revolution, both for OEM car development and retrofit onto old cars - especially if it could be cheaper than a performance cam, which I'd imagine would be more expensive than the "nice exhaust system" he compares this budget to. I think of this as being like the switch from carburetors to electronic fuel injection, which is now universal on OEM applications and quite common retrofitted on classic cars, through things like Megasquirt. I have converted my classic Beetle to EFI in this manner, and I'm looking forward to installing this on it.

Computer could adjust valve timing on the fly, one map for maximum torque/horsepower another map for maximum fuel economy. Ecu that could optimize timing and even be able to run different fuels by measuring o2 readings. "There's a million engineers out there that are way smarter than me" I honestly wouldn't be so sure of that... If I am understanding everything correctly it's not overly hard (relatively speaking) to make a system to open a valve via pneumatics, the issue arises in the closing of the valves. A valve is meant to ramp closed and without that the valve smashes into the valve seat every time it shuts. I could be completely wrong but if I am not then both the valves and the valve seats will be wearing out at a rapid rate on this engine. I am open to correction here.

Hear me out. You need to build a 2 stroke engine with an intake valve in the head, an exhaust port in the cylinder and a supercharger. The full valve control of your "freevalve" would allow you to have proper idle thanks to the atkinson cycle and open the intake at the right time to flush the chamber without blowing tons of air fuel mixture into the exhaust at all rpm and loads, allowing you to acually run boost unlike the detroit diesels for example. So much more power to weight than a 4 stroke but much better than conventional 2 strokes in terms of: 1) less oil in the combustion chamber as there is a wet sump instead of premix and the oil lost at the port gous straight into the exhaust 2) proper idle instead of just firering every coule of revolutions 3) real supercharging, centrifugals can efficiently run over 40psi And with mazdas new skyactiv x cylinder pressure sensors got much cheaper and it would be possible to implement them to tune the engine by computing bmep on every stroke instead of having to use a dyno. This way you can have software run the engine with the goal to maximise bmep and do minor changes on individual strokes instead of the slow process of changing valve timing and doing another dyno run to test the changes.
@CANBigPickle3 жыл бұрын
You just described a large slow speed marine engine. Look up the Watrsila Flex series to see what it looks like in the real world. Of course we do the intake in the liner and exhaust in the head. Unifow scavenging of combustion gas is great way to exchange your combustion air.

@RonnieMacJr693 жыл бұрын
There have been attempts at 2 stroke engines using intake valves before eliminating the need for a reed valve or piston ported setup and gives you more engine building leeway not having to worry about bottom end compression and transfer timing. There are also a few attempts at a low emission oil injected 2stroke which operates like a four stroke in the way that the piston skirt is oiled but no oil or small amounts make it past the rings into the combustion chamber

Awesome build! I’m a piano technician and have rebuild several player pianos. The pneumatic systems involved here is strikingly similar to a player piano, except that that system is based on vacuum. Your software is the stand in for the roll of paper with little perforations that slide across a tracker bar. When the holes in the paper align with a hole in the tracker bar it allows atmosphere to trip a small leather “solenoid” valve and unleash the vacuum into a hinged pneumatic activating a note. Just thought I’d share that!

@jamesalexander75403 жыл бұрын
The rotary engine was an early type of internal combustion engine, usually designed with an odd number of cylinders per row in a radial configuration, in which the crankshaft remained stationary in operation, with the entire crankcase and its attached cylinders rotating around it as a unit. Its main application was in aviation, although it also saw use before its primary aviation role, in a few early motorcycles and automobiles.
