I love the nolzur's sculpts, they all have a lot of action and implied movement, but the state of mould lines, flash, and in some of their bigger minis the gaps definitely leave a lot to be desired. its not on the same level of egregious as Forge World minis, but its still more issues than the price point would imply
@hobbyjobbers Жыл бұрын
Agreed. And scraping the flash and mold lines off effectively is so difficult with that plastic. Love what they’re doing with a lot of the sculpts, but the hassle (and size of most humanoids…) isn’t worth it for me anymore.

Reaper minis do a better job than Forgeworld
@MrAbraxus666 Жыл бұрын
Forgeworld at that size is never usually an issue, it's when you get to the solid blocks of resin they fall down, the build quality on that dragon was absolutely shocking, look at 4:39. This is also a plastic mini, Forgeworld are all resin.

@tsmcgu Жыл бұрын
I painted my first model with color shifts (turbodork) about a month ago, and yeah it was super nerve-wracking because you feel like there's no going back and if you mess it up or scratch it you'll ruin the whole effect, but I think it's a lot more "organic" than that and it all kinda works out in the end. Great job!
@yellheahtris Жыл бұрын
The colors you guys use for your line highlighting / edge highlighting and base coats are always so nice. I can never think to use different colors outside of the shade im using, and it just makes everything look flat. Im assuming that will come with practice and studying, but how you guys make everything work together is so satisfying and just looks so high quality (not surprising by any means coming from TTT!)
@computersocsci Жыл бұрын
Awesome work! I love how the focused use of color shift added something really special without looking overblown

Outstanding work Jenn! I love him. You've inspired me to attempt my own, much smaller dragon mini who has been sitting naked for the longest time. So, as Murray so eloquently put it, DRAGONS!!!!
@garnermcculloch2778 Жыл бұрын
The mold lines, flashing and price of adult dragon minis drove me to get a resin 3D printer a few years ago. Best mini hobby decision I have ever made. It literally paid for itself with 2 adult dragon prints.
@luketfer Жыл бұрын
Size CAN be important but only for two specific subclass namely Rune Knight and Path of the Giant. Because they're normally built to be grapplers and they can grow to Large size, which means they can grapple huge creatures but not Gargantuan until level 18 where they can grow to Huge size (or if someone casts Enlarge on them) and then can grapple Gargantuan creatures. As someone who played Rune Knight in a 3-20 campaign, the different between Huge and Gargantuan actually was something you had to consider.

little tip on the wings: Place it in hot water first, put the wings in the desired position, then once you get them in place, remove from the hot water and dunk immediately in ice cold water to set them :)

I think this turned out really great over all, I feel it might of brought it more together to hit the body with a dry brush of the gold to brown. But I really do like that contrast between the more plated scails of the neck and tail.

Jenn. . . This is an absolutely beautiful model! I know the pain of painting a large model that’s fully put together, so massive props to you for doing this. I’m jelly of the skill, patience and persistent that you had to see this one through. The colour changing paint was a great call too. If I ever saw something like this on my dnd table, I would be completely blow away. Thank you for an amazing video! Can’t wait for the next one!

Don't know why, but this vid out of all the recent ones made me realize something : I'm glad to see Jen smiling, speaking more and having fun, compared to her shy behavior at the relaunch of TTT 2 years ago. Feels like she's way more confortable on and behind camera, which makes the vids themselves more fun to watch ^^

Jen, you did such an amazing job! I had always wanted to paint a dragon… until I got one. Lol. My son got me the biggest dragon he could find - and i’ve been painting it for two years now! I had assumed (incorrectly), that such a large mini would be a dream to paint, but alas, she’s hard work - there are sooo many scales. You made her really beautiful and I hope that you guys have a great time playing with her and putting her to great use. And that was a brilliant use of the colour shifting paint!
@BarokaiRein Жыл бұрын
It's quite odd that the tail fits worse than it does whenever I 3d print big models. You'd think that at this price point pieces work together better than they do with resin prints made with cheap resin. Like if I used something nice like TGM-7 those parts would fit perfectly because of minimal, if any shrinkage, but nah I use Sunlu ABS-like, which is by no means a perfect resin.

I've been working on a few of the younger versions of these dragons so your timing is perfect! The weird thing is both the dragons I have, the wings are in a similar position, which has made it more difficult to get in on the tops of the wings. I'm sure I'll figure it out though. Thanks for sharing the process!🤘🏼😎

Is there a channel where they play a campaign on a realistic game table? D&D channels seem to be either building cool looking terrain to play on, or people just sitting around a table playing a campaign. Why don't any of them use these as visuals while filming themselves playing a campaign? You could add cool low camera angles, a couple of sound effects. Anything that would keep the audience following and engaged. That would be really cool.

No need to carve the tail unless it is massively mismolded. Just put it in recently boiled water. Similar heat then cold can fix bent bits on nolzur minis or to move limbs on minis temporarily or permanently(I also now know I have to dip my green dragon in some hot water as one wing is drooping).
@TabletopTime Жыл бұрын
It was too big to go in the slot
@VolkAus Жыл бұрын
@@TabletopTime Okay then so yours was mismolded. I was just saying what I did with my own copy. I would have struggled to fit it if not for the hot water dip that made the plastic soft enough to flex over it.

The Nolzur's sculps are cool... as a 3D render. The quality of the casting (injection molding?) is often very poor and I've found they are not designed in a way to be easily painted. Cloaks, wings, arms, and weapons often get in the way of your brush more than with other manufacturers.
@TheSmuey Жыл бұрын
It is a cool model, but to be honest? I paid that much for my resin printer... And there are A LOT of cool models for printing available (Archvillain Games has a very nice green dragon in their welcome pack, for instance, and Loot Studios has an absolutely amazing red dragon in an earlier bundle) and those don't have the disadvantage of being pre-assembled in such an awkward pose for painting. It's a great option if you don't want to print your models, but if you do, there are far better options out there!
@vintagekaiju5486 Жыл бұрын
Save yourselves the trouble by priming Nolzur minis yourself. Every one I've owned that came "pre primed" seemed to be paint repellant.
@MagnusMoerkoereJohannesen Жыл бұрын
I kinda like most of the Nolzur sculpts, but the price they ask does in no way reflect the absolutely atrocious quality of the minis. I recently bought a modron quadrone to kitbash into a character for my D&D game, and it was such a frustrating experience. The molds had obviously slipped at some point, mold lines and flash everywhere, and their primer had clogged so many details... sigh.

Next time instead of carving the dragon, try to boil the "MALE" part for like 5 minute. Is molecule will be malleable and more easy to "mold" the tail part!

While it was a cool experiment, I don't think the color shift worked at all. It would have needed to be used on ALL the scales, it made way to much of a shiny contrast.

Yeah the sad part about a lot of these overpriced models is sadly there so poorly done like the outside looks nice but when you have to put pieces together they don't fit well you think it was a knockoff that you just paid an exorbitant amount of price for but ironically enough a lot of them knockoffs there's people that take pride in their work even if it is a 3D print of an already done model I've seen 3D print models that go flush together better than gamesworkshop models I've seen kitbashed 3d printed models that go together more seamlessly and fluidly then any games workshop or do you need or any model I've had before they go together as fluidly as like a gundam model kit I had someone 3D print the giant bust sized model it was almost 2 ft tall it came in 38 pieces thing fit together completely flawlessly
