After sharing a personal decision on social media, the kind words and responses of others inspired me to post this video. This is unlike the videos, any video, I have ever posted. To me, it is also perfectly in line with my mission. Getting outdoors gives many of us a mental reprieve from the exhaustions of life. If the outdoors is a part of a healthy headspace, then this part of my journey is how I make the best out of my experiences in the great outdoors.
Share your experiences or thoughts with me in the comments. I read and respond to EVERY SINGLE ONE!

This was a long depressing winter, but Spring has sprung! Welcome!. I live deep in the Redwoods of northwest CA. The high you get from nature can't be beat. You said this video wasn't about catching the next fish, but it really is because that's what life is, in my opinion. One day/fish at a time. This video inspired me to subscribe because I want to share it with you. Thank you!

Thanks for your reply Ash. I don't talk a lot on the internet about my life before I admitted fully to myself that I had no control and that my life had become unmanageable. I'm 72 now and it's been a few years. I have never regretted that decision. I'm glad that you have filled your life up with natural beauty and now the challenge of further education. Please don't feel that you need to reply. You have a great life now and I know that I see it just getting better even with the challenges that life throws our way. Merry Christmas!

Inspiring Ash Outdoors. Inspiring to me , at a time when I am considering kicking a few vices of my own. For a few years ...it was Bad influences & choices ,more recently Covid, And My own father's death (non Covid) has had me spiraling pretty bad... I have slowed the tailspin I was in, and I feel things are looking up. Seeing others including yourself feeling good and Positive about the decision to close that book , and start writing a new one...has me and others thinking it's a good choice for our own lives as well . My goal now is to catch all the fish my father loved to pursue...and my own bucket list of species. Thanks for being Real Ash. It says a lot about you. Thank you for sharing, and congrats on the PhD program. I quit drinking along with my partner-slash-fishing-buddy earlier this year, and caffeine is next on the list. My life is so much lovelier without alcohol, although I, too, never suffered “problem drinking.” I nearly lost my beloved fishing buddy to alcoholism, and it’s been an eye-opener how much our culture here in the US condones destructive addictions like alcohol, in so many ways. Kudos to you and everyone who has kicked the unhealthy habit.

We’ll done! I would suggest to quit decaf too (as it’s not caffeine free), so as to be completely at zero. Plus, then one avoids the other chemicals from coffee/decaf. I drink various herbal teas now (i.e. no black nor green tea, so no matcha either). I have made it a “sport” to have a great variation of herbal teas at home, the herbs often harvested and dried by myself! I also bring a couple of herbal teabags with me in my handbag (get a mini tin box or something). When visiting friend and they offer coffee or tea, I just say thank you, I’ll just steep my own teabag if it’s ok, as I don’t react well to coffee/tea. Then I change the subject, as people in general do no want to hear about coffee addiction etc. Very cool that you are off alcohol too. It’s so ingrained in our society that alcohol is equal to free time, happiness, and is a reward for our hard work - and that is often quite misguided. Best of luck with your endeavors!

Ash, thanks for sharing your story. A couple years back I had some cardiovascular troubles and with the recommendation of my doctor, I severely began to limit my caffeine and alcohol consumption. Caffeine is not good for your blood pressure, and now I only have 1-2 glasses of heart-healthy red wine a month (down from at least a couple beers a day.) I have not missed hangovers and staying up staring at the ceiling because I had a coffee after 4pm. Best of luck to you in your Ph.D. and I look forward to more videos!.

Loved this video. I quit alcohol in 1992 for different reasons than yours, but I can attest that that decision definitely made my life better on many levels. Still relying on my caffeine in one form or another on a daily basis, but I don't feel that it is hindering my life in any way. I life a stone's throw from the American River in Sacramento, as I mentioned to you in another of your videos, perhaps we'll run into one another on the river. Have yet to land some salmon on the American or Sacramento River but have caught a steelhead or two and many striped bass. I wish you much sucess in your Doctorate program. I went to graduate school late in life and thought THAT was tough. Thanks for this video. The title is what caught my eye, and I trust it will prove inspirational to many. Don't forget to close the books long enough to cast a line out once in a while...

Thank you, Jeff. You are the second person on this thread that quit in 1992, so you are coming up on 30 years! That is incredible. Just two months in, I feel so much better. I can't wait to see what a year, two years, five years, feels like. I hope we do run into each other on the river, I haven't caught much on the Sac or American but I am excited to chase some steelhead around. Graduate school certainly is not a cakewalk, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to go. Your advice is solid. My first quarter I did not give myself enough time to rest or fish and I paid for it mentally. That balance of rest and work is one I am still trying to figure out for me. Thanks again for checking out the video, I am glad you liked it!

Job well done, I quit drinking at age 17, and I tell my kids I made that decision not because I was smart but because I got lucky. I parted ways with a lot of friends do to a loss of commonality... years later I found out how liberating that decision has been in experiencing life. Maybe I have not lived big but I have lived very well. I have experienced things that I believe I might have missed otherwise. I do look back with more fondness than regrets, so the road maybe less traveled has been filled with roses smelled and appreciated. The real value will be treasured decades later. The roses will be remembered as smelling better the sunsets treasured more and the sunrises even more golden. Plod forward it will reward you well. Best regards, well done and know "it will be good."

First of all, congrats on your Ph.D acceptance!! That’s such a huge step in anyones lives and you should be so proud of yourself 🙌🏼 I spent most of my life majorly addicted to caffeine and alcohol and recently kicked both in the last year. My caffeine intake started as young as 7-8 years old and became a standard thing, and by the time I was 16, I was ingesting maybe 1500+mg of caffeine EVERYDAY. It took until I was 22-23 to realize how much it contributed to my anxiety and I cut down daily consumption from 1000+mg a day to maybe 50-100mg max. These days, I drink mostly herbal tea or the occasional earl grey or matcha. It’s made such a positive improvement in my life. Alcohol wasn’t too far behind, I started drinking at 14 and spent most of my late teens/early twenties a full blown alcoholic. I was mixing alcohol with drinks to have in class, at work, at home alone in my room, you name it. Being Native, especially for a lot of natives like myself, many people in my family were alcoholics or drug addicts, so it wasn’t something totally far fetched. My mom struggled for a long time with alcohol (she was able to kick it too when I was young and has a glass of wine a handful of times a year), so seeing her do that was very inspiring to me. I seldom drink now, maybe a handful of drinks per year that I never finish, mostly because I like to try local brews when I travel. I’ve adopted a mentality of still leaving the door open to these things rather than a harsh “no”, and I’ve found it’s allowed me to better control myself and really be in tune with my body and what I want. Safe to say since I’ve kicked both, my quality of life has improved dramatically. Sorry for the novel, this just really struck a cord with me and I wanted to share my story! Thank you for speaking up about these things, it’s really inspiring to me as someone that is about to move somewhere where I can be outside more, and your video helped remind me that I’ve made the best decisions for myself. Much love! 🤙🏼💚🎣

I quit drinking alcohol going on 7 years now, I would typically drink a beer or 2 during the week after work just to destress after a long day and when the weekend came I would drink a little more. I quit drinking to get into shape and start taking care of myself more because I am a single father and want to be the best I can be for my kids. Life is too short and precious I'm learning never to take anything for granted.

Thanks, these are some good reminders, there’s no question that increasing your mental clarity and boosting your drive, comes with quitting. Yes, there are many ways to kick the habit, Steffon Barkload's Quit Drinking Forever is what worked for me, best shortcut I go’ogled that took days without withdrawal.

It’s so hard to quit booze and pills if you drink caffeine because caffeine causes higher anxiety and stress you need something to calm down later on in the day

This is very true. A lot of people's drinking problems are probably a form of caffeine problems in disguise. They only need to drink because the caffeine gets them so stressed they need something to settle them down at night.

How do you deal with seasonal depression? That would be another good topic for you to share ask others here for discussion. Just a thought. 🤷‍♂️

That is a really good question. I thought about sharing more about that, so it is great to hear that is helpful. I will think a bit more about a video! Seasonal depression is a tricky one for me. The truth is that I work closely with a psychiatrist and a therapist this time of the year. The short days are difficult for me, and it was even worse when I lived in Washington state. Exercise is so key- people take it for granted, but its the single most helpful thing for me when I am depressed. I tell my friends that I deal with the depression. They check on me often, and talk through sad times with me without judgement. Oly, my labrador, is with me all of the time and that helps too. Avoiding depressants like alcohol helps out more than I can express. Thanks for watching the video, and thanks for asking that question!

@@BadAshOutdoors ...Great feedback, and you have the ability to reach more people here on your platform when it come to seasonal depression mental health issues as many people such as myself struggle with it. I also see a therapists and I take Citalopram to help me stay calm with my thoughts. The next step is I'm hoping to buy a Golden Retriever puppy next year, I'm sure he's going to help me out tremendously (like your Oly) to have a supportive 4 legged friend in my corner, another depression pill if you will! LOL!.. Alrighty, have a great day be well my friend! 😊

@@BadAshOutdoors Just a suggestion that helps me. A sunlight lamp. My daughter bought me one a few years back and it works for those gloomy Northwest coast winter days. Just one tip in the seasonal dysfunction syndrome toolbox.

I'm so sorry you're not feeling well, it definitely seemly like you should talk with a doctor. Caffeine and alcohol tend to upset your stomach, and the absence of them should help. Hope you're feeling better soon

Seemed impossible, but it’s been over 7 months and I don’t crave a drop of alcohol, the KEY difference was that I didn’t suffer withdrawal, not even within the first 30 days after I actually applied what I talked about. No need for AA meetings or meds either, I just luckily go’ogled Steffon Barkload’s latest, man, wish I had done it sooner.
