It’s also not as difficult as some people claim it is. People who lack managerial, leadership or financial skills always find it difficult but business requires a little bit of both or at least the willingness to learn. Anyone who lacks the ability to communicate their objectives or manage, will have to hire a manager but even that will require communicating objectives. Delegation is also an important aspect. 9-5 jobs are difficult for people who are not easy going. And business is even more difficult for such people. Business is always difficult, for people who jump in without knowing what they’re doing, can’t tap into the mindset of their customer, want to micro manage and do not want to learn. Their setbacks do not stem from business but their personality type.

She says she loves the fact she is running her own business because she gets to spend a lot more time with her family/children (while at the same time mentioning for years she had worked 60-70hr/week on her business and recently started working "only" 50-55hr/week). That means she gave to the business 10-11 hours per day 6 days per week over the first few years and recently 8-9 hr/day 6 days a week. So I'm not really sure how that equates to "spending a lot more time with her family". Same as for 99.9% of entrepreneurs it seems her family/kids are the last ones on her list of priorities.

A lot of entrepreneurs often work from home even if they go to the office/warehouse for some hours on some days. So they get to be around their kids a lot and can also also take them out on vacations, short trips and do more activities with them when they are off. Unlike with a job most women or men come home exhausted and barely spend anytime with the family.

For the second site three years later, I paid a web developer - still I had to upload all merchandise, pricing, etc. Pictures require a minimum number of pixels in website - hired a photograph. I could go on and on... Online advertisement for a one square inch flashing can be minimum $800. Facebook's business advertisement was outrageous. Exhausting!!! I do believe wholeheartedly that for those growing a business, it is equally important to focus on commitment to work life balance as it is to focus on the company. If you burn the candle at both ends and don’t enjoy a balance, it is not likely to sustain success…which is why half of businesses close by year 5. The plot thickens in this story, though. The couple left their jobs with only $10k in savings to run the business. They did $4 million in sales in the first year - a product business. Where did the rest of the money come from to fulfill $4 million worth of orders because only $10k seems a bit low to meet that volume of sales. I would want to know where the rest of the money came from because that's the real story and the real lesson. I get the sense this is not so much of a bootstrap success story as it is being presented. Nevertheless, congratulations.
