Bakugo is like the only character besides Endeavor that gets any sort of long form character development past season 2, everyone else starts to feel essentially the same with sporadic moments of realizations and developments here or there at best, those two though really fundamentally change as people and it's pretty masterful to watch, especially with Bakugo where it really does end up feeling earned and like you watched a child finally take their first step towards adulthood by taking responsibility for their actions and how it may have impacted others in the past

When I heard the manga was wrapping up, I decided to marathon MHA from the beginning (I had also stopped regularly watching around season 4) and season 1 was really effective for me this time around. Even 8 years after its premiere, those early episodes feel refreshing in this climate of “cynical” superhero media, because Horikoshi approaches the setting with honest love and admiration for it, and that’s really special to me.

The All Might vs Nomu fight is still a fucking banger that still gets me going to this day. It's an absolutely intense scene, showing both the peak of All Might as an unstoppable force and constantly underlaid with the knowledge that, with every punch, every second of passing time, All Might is burning himself to the ground. He literally cannot keep this up for much longer. It's inspiring, nerve-wracking, you know he's gonna win but at what cost? And the translation work and voice acting in the English dub are absolutely brilliant. All Might's "Yeah, what about it?" is beyond hilarious, and every line read on the more dramatic pieces are full of the intensity they deserve. Animation, acting, scripting, and potentially above all the rest, the freaking soundtrack (You Say Run became a meme for MONTHS in the aftermath) all came together for some absolute brilliance.

One minor mistake I noticed in this vid is the portion where you discuss Aizawa digging at Deku about One For All. iirc, the staff at U.A. aren't aware about the details of All Might's quirk. They don't know he can transfer it to somebody else. They just know about his declining health, injury, and the fact that he changes into a small form. Which is something the rest of the world aren't keen on. He doesn't know that All Might gave his quirk to Deku. He genuinely does assume that it was Deku's birth given quirk that he can't control

This. All Might explicitly says the only people at UA who know the truth are the Principal (Nezu) and the Nurse (Recovery Girl). I got into MHA a little over a year ago when my wife and I started watching the anime. It has quickly become one of my favorite anime / manga and one of my favorite franchises ever. Its messages about hope and heroism are incredible and inspiring. I'm thankful to Horikoshi for giving us memorable characters, a fun world, and a gripping narrative. This series has given me three of my favorite characters in all of fiction: -The bubbly and kindhearted Ochako Uraraka (one of my favorites in all of fiction quite frankly) - The smart and courageous Izuku Midoriya (whose overall arc feels very relatable) - The powerful and reserved Shoto Todoroki I only wish I got to discuss it with a college friend of mine who passed away a week after we started watching the anime. He got me back into the industry after leaving it in my adolescence. His favorite show was Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I watched it a couple years ago and adored it. We discussed it (and many other things) without end. I was very much looking forward to having articulate conversations with him about this series, but it was not meant to be. He was truly one of a kind. I miss him everyday and wish I could discuss this with him, but I digress. I'm glad I got to be a part of the run before the manga concludes next month. I hold MHA near and dear to my heart. Thank you Kohei Horikoshi. I hope you get some well-deserved rest after your story is complete. You earned it.

Yeah, I agree completely. IMO, My Hero Academia is a modern masterpiece and a perfect blend of the shonen and superhero genres. And unlike other series based on those two genres, I don't despise any of the characters, including Endeavor, Overhaul, the earlier version of Bakugo and yes, even Mineta - especially seeing how their character arcs usually progress later on as a central component of their personal evolution (unlike other shonen manga/anime, where certain characters' flaws and crimes are conveniently swept under the rug, i.e. Vegeta and Gaara). EVERY character in the series has such a uniquely human personality, a captivating personal story arc, a creative powerset and an iconic design that cements my love for them. Horikoshi's perfect grasp of action, comedy, drama, personality, relatability and pathos - as well as his amazing art style and great pacing - only further solidifies my appreciation of MHA. Yes, Kohei Horikoshi has more than earned a long and well-deserved period of rest. Thank you, Horikoshi-sensei, for delivering one of the most passionate and heartfelt superhero sagas in existence. I can't wait to see what you do next.

MHA will always be my favorite shonen anime. It might not be the best,but it helped me a lot throughout my teens. Now in my early twenties,its a hard pill to swallow, tht it ends in 2 chapters. Hope all of the fans like myself will enjoy it to the end together 👍

As a shy nerd who grew up on and, still to this day, loved superhero fiction, MHA instantly hooked me. But I can say that it only got better for me as it went on and the perspectives were developed, with Horikoshi interrogating the flaws of this world he created & how they parallel issues in real life. Your comment that "we are products of our environments" was an interesting one to hear here, as this becomes crucial to the series as the villains are developed and the themes which Horikoshi is exploring become more apparent & his messages into sight. A big part of what makes the series so superb though, and highlgihts Horikoshi's skill as a writer, is that all these deeper themes & complications which are explored later in the series were established within the first chapter, we just couldn't recognize that fully at the time. While the series does have some elements I found dissatisfying, I can honestly say with us being 3 chapters until the end that MHA is one of my personal best stories which I've ever experienced.

I genuinely believe it's overstated. There's weirdos in any fan base, it just so happens that a lot of this story relies on eugenics and Horikoshi himself is a very open minded guy.

But isn't that the case with series like Naruto, Bleach and One Piece though? They have plenty of slow moments and arguably to a far greater extent.

@@SpiderGuy325 Big difference is that those were longer weekly shows that people didn't have to wait a year in-btw to watch. Current audience is spoiled for anime that doesn't do that so they don't have patience for slow bits, which is still nonsense but it is what it is.

I'm so happy that you finally cover this anime / manga. It was actually the first real anime I started watching religiously and followed to the current season. What sucked me into the series, was the focus on being strategic with your powers. It's not just about strenght. Sure, some powers are more overpowered than others but even the weaker ones can accomplish a lot, if they are used properly and to me that was a genius message. I do have to admit tho, that the story currently feels kinda all over the place but I'm also not the biggest fan of war arcs because it can get really hard to follow. But I will still follow the story until the last volume releases.
@sokumotanaka92714 ай бұрын
I mean "Not all people are born equal" I very real to true life. I'm a black man and I deal with a harsher world than most, many women, disabled and POC do. I think it's important to realize that and also try bettering life for those people. It's not what I'd call uplifting but calling it cynical is like ignoring the real issues people face in life.
@sokumotanaka92714 ай бұрын
I would also argue that it's a bit disingenuous to say that while the other characters are gifted they lack heart and a drive to do right." Uraraka wants to do hero work to support her family Mina wants to inspire and protect women from creeps Kirishima literally exist, he's literally passion given form Ojiro is called plain and loser by the cast and "fans" and yet got into U.A and 1-A Yes Deku has alot of passion but I wouldn't say that no one could come close, it's because of his interactions with these people he grows more passionate, open minded, kind etc. And one issue I'll always have with MHA is the series going "These people are so talented and gifted with power." So what if we gave the protagonist the equivalent of Supermans powers and never explore the others. I would of loved character growth and development for Ojiro, him teaching Izuku hand to hand maybe, and our green haired protag learning and growing because of Ojiro cause he could relate to being underestimated and looked down on. But the series just midly does what Dragon ball z does and has the three best be people with overwhelming powers. They have such creative powers and the people who always solve the issues are a guy with several powers, a guy with explosions and a guy so boring they had to give him both fire and ice or he'd just be generic otherwise. but I never seen someone use Tail, or Frog or tape and yet those barely get any play, and it's usually in one giant ensemble clump, they never get to shine. This series had such great potential to be something different but the message goes from "Everyone and anyone can be a hero" to "You can be a hero as long as your powerful enough for society to care and for your power to matter and impress people." I think tail is alot more interesting than the 7000th guy to use fire or ice so they had to combined them to make things interesting. But I guess if I want something with a good message I should just watch X-men 200% better anyways.
@sirchucklefuckle14234 ай бұрын
Yeah it's a bit weird to say they lack it when getting to know them we see their passion, drive and motivation. Izuku thought these students were elites who only cared about fame on introduction. Until he talked to them😂 and learned everyone's as driven as he is!

@SpiderGuy3254 ай бұрын
Totally agree. Compared to protagonists like Goku, Naruto, Luffy and Ichigo, Izuku is incredibly nuanced and fully realized. He's not just the happy-go-lucky glutton or the stoic badass that shonen protagonists tend to be. Watching Izuku's evolution from a timid geek to a courageous superhero was extremely satisfying to watch, especially compared to the arcs of other generic shonen protagonists.

Hey Mark, happy to see you’re getting back into the series again. It’s really rewarding once you find out how the story ticks and what the message is really about, which is in some ways apparent all the way back in season 1. Post-season 3 loses people because it goes in a very non-traditional direction, showing society’s fall. Even the arcs where much doesn’t seem to happen are actually critical to the journeys of big characters, so always keep an open mind. Stuff like Culture Festival and even Joint Training all serve a purpose. Now, about Ochako talking about Deku’s hero name: that’s actually rather central to his journey and the story. It doesn’t seem like it for where you’re at, but that has a truly profound effect on him and it comes back in a major way in later story beats. It informs his very identity as a hero, so if you see moments you think are odd or not really fitting, there’s a good chance they’re revisited later and expanded upon.

One of the things that I think doesn't get talked about enough with MHA is how the inking style (at least, in the manga) changes on certain characters in a way which I read as direct homages to the series roots in other styles of comics. All-Might is inked with heavy blacks and feathering like silver-age American superhero fare, Stain's inking style is very Todd McFarlane's Spawn, and Lemillion is 100% stylistically inspired by Tin-Tin. I'm sure there are others that I am missing, but it's really impressive that the series is able to take all these different styles, have them all in one place, and still have them feel like they belong together.

It's funny, because everyone I know who was into MHA, also dropped off of it, and I really mean everyone. At least 10 or so people. I also heard that the Great Ninja War comes back in the end? I was never into it myself. One Punch Man was more my speed.

This is pretty common with the long runner Shonen manga. Idk how old you are, but back in the day Naruto and Bleach had the exact same case. Ppl started dropping it, saying "series fell off", and constantly talked about how "dog shit" both series were at the time. Now those latter portions of the series are remembered more fondly. Was shocked when ppl were so hyped for the Thousand Year Blood War anime, cause while it was publishing, everybody just dogged on it. Anyway, I'm sure MHA will be remembered more fondly as a whole as the years go by

@@milesdarobot4980 Yeah, I think it's only natural that when a series goes so long you will lose interest at times. It's not necessarily a sign of an issue with the story.
