One thing I love about the Ochako vs Bakugo fight is Aizawa standing up for Bakugo and telling the people in the crowd to chill.

It really helps to reaffirm that despite showing behavior which many would consider villainous, Bakugo is a character with an incredibly strong sense of self. He is shown multiple times to believe that the greatest way to show respect to an opponent is by not holding back against them. He demonstrates this in his fight with Ochako, then is denied it in his fight with Todoroki.

My favorite part of the tournament that I never see people comment on is this: after their fight, Uraraka is the very first person in the entire series who Bakugo calls by name. At this stage in the series the only other person he gives this treatment to is All Might (which is not his given name). She is the first person in the entire series he gives this level of respect to. Besides being a wonderful recognition of her efforts, it’s also a great subtle piece of character development for Bakugo. It shows (without yet explaining ) what he values, and that he isn’t so abrasive that his respect can’t be earned.

Hori gets alot of hate for writing that's not perfect or atleast flowing clean by todays harsh standards, sometimes it could be due to many US readers not getting the flow of his narrative not fitting what their used to. Like how a foreign romance is alot slower paced and thoughtful than an american romance comedy. Then their is the art that's cluttered and hard to follow. But his art isnt discussed enough for how he changes it up and is detailed as berserk sometimes. Not as bad of a writer or artist as people act. Just annoying cause manga authors have to be 10/10 in every nen category or their manga is considered MID lol.

Todoroki's quirk limitation isn't just extreme fatigue on one side, if he uses one side too much then his body maintains that tempeture. For example, when he used his ice too much, his right side would start to freeze and his entire body would be too cold to handle, to the point where it is difficult to move and unhealthy. That's the problem ice quirks and fire quirks have, too cold or too hot, that's why having the two of them perfectly balanced makes such a huge difference, bc by using them both on the right amount he can constantly maintain his body temperature balanced and last way more using it.

3:43 Important thing to note when it comes to mentioning "Lower classes" 1-B is not lower or worse than 1-A. The two aren't split by performance or ability. There are just two hero classes, one called 1-A and one called 1-B. Now that is only the administrative view of course. 1-A gets a lot more screen time than 1-B, so of course we see them as much more capable. However, it is important to remember that 1-B is not a class of second tier students. Both 1-A and 1-B are all students who got in either through the exams or recommendation. Any member of 1-A could be in 1-B and vise versa. They are just Group 1 and Group 2. Not ranked. Just existing as two classes, one of which gets more screentime due to our protagonist being in it.

Another interesting way of looking at it (that I think gets mentioned in the anime) is that Class 1-A has more experience in Battles against villains, out in the wild, trial by fire. Class 1-B has probably done a lot more proper training to figure out their quirks.
@suarez91083 ай бұрын
I also interpret that characters like Bakugo, Todoroki, Tokoyami, and Midoriya got put into 1-A because they have far more destructive quirks that need Aizawa's erasure incase they go haywire. While 1-B is filled with heavy hitters that don't have the same potential of danger incase something happens.

“What part of her was fragile?” Will always be one of my favorite Bakugo lines. The fact that he gains so much respect for Ochako in their fight despite his overwhelming victory just goes to show his character. He doesn’t judge people for being weaker than him as long as they’re putting in their maximum effort. He respects hard work. Which is why it’s so ironic that he puts down Deku as much as he does, despite Deku being one of the hardest working characters in the show. Bakugo just isn’t aware of that for so long so it makes it seem like Deku has been holding back. It’s easier for him to believe Deku was holding back and not putting in effort for his whole life instead of the truth that he has just recently been given a chance and is growing so rapidly because of the tremendous effort he’s putting into it.

One of the main reasons why I absolutely love this series is because everyone gets their moment. I grew up with DBZ, and it will always be my favorite. But tbh, if your name isn’t Goku, Gohan, or Vegeta… you rarely contribute to the conflict. In MHA, literally everyone gets their moment to be badass!
@thegreatburgerkingpiccolo95493 ай бұрын
Eh that ain’t too true tbh. Krillin helped out with the whole Red Ribbon conflict and Uranai Baba tournament (with the help of Yamcha), Tenshinhan and Yajirobe were pretty key in the Demon King Piccolo arc, Piccolo literally took Gohan in during the Saiyan arc, Yajirobe literally saved everyone from Vegeta, Krillin was the MVP of both the Saiyan and Freeza arcs (he’s the one who came up with the idea of going to Namek in the first place), Tenshinhan literally came in clutch saving Android 18 from Cell, giving them enough time for Krillin, Trunks, and Vegeta to step in (even though Krillin and Vegeta fumbled), and Piccolo had to do so much strategizing in the Boo saga. Not to mention Bulma being extremely instrumental in almost all of the arcs in the series, ESPECIALLY the Hunt for the Dragon Balls, the Red Ribbon, and Cell arcs (and don’t even get me STARTED on Mr. Satan)
@richinfacts60033 ай бұрын
Not only is that not true but it’s also unfair to cut out OG Dragon Ball like it’s not half of the same story when half those characters didn’t even exist.
@DParkerNunya3 ай бұрын
@thegreatburgerkingpiccolo9549 I don't think they're being incorrect either though. Early Dragon Ball is fine, but once we get into Z it really starts to become a problem. Krillin's biggest contributions in Z are: coming back to help Goku (good, but doesn't accomplish much), dying (which pushed Goku to go Super saiyan), not killing 18 (which directly leads to the death of 16, Trunks, and eventually Goku), and I genuinely cannot name something for the Buu saga. And Krillin is arguably the side character who does the most in the story, save Piccolo and Bulma, who do important but incredibly small things. Even Gohan and Vegeta run into this problem the further into Z we go. This does rectify for Vegeta at least in Super, and for Gohan after Super Hero, but it's a consistent problem that Goku's actions are typically the only ones with real lasting impact after OG Dragon Ball.

I completely agree about the anime helping to flesh out the fights. I have been reading manga for 15+ years now and MHA is one of the only ones I've struggled to process what is fully going on and I'm not sure how but after rereading the manga after watching the anime it makes a lot more sense. Like for example the final fight of the manga (I won't go into it cos spoilers!) but I have no clue wtf happened during that fight just because of the pacing and the panels. I've read it twice and I just need it to be animated it now to truly appreciate it. Another example coming to mind was the Yakuza arc. That in the anime was absolutely beautiful and had one of the best anime fights I have seen in years but in the manga it was just meh? Normally manga is much easier to digest for myself compared to the anime but it is switched with MHA which I would class as my favourite anime and one of my least favourite manga's.

@16:30 I will NEVER understand Mark's dismissal that there are people that simply want to see cool "shallow" stuff. A fight/match having narrative importance is the cherry on top but it doesn't have to be the point. @TotallyNotMark3 ай бұрын
Different people like different things in fights. Many people, yourself included are there for the action and cool factor. That's fine. Others like myself are there for the story. That too is fine. A fight can be cool and have substance. And in the context of a tournament I think should have both. If a fight had nothing but story and "character development to it" with really bad action I would criticise it the exact same way. Because what makes a fight in a tournament compelling is a combination of action and story. If something isn't interesting visually and narratively then a mangaka has failed on stome level. Simple as that.

Your videos have got me remembering how much I LOVED this series! I stopped around the same time you did (end of season 4) but now that it's ending and there's a lot more content I never saw I'm gonna go back and rewatch cause man I can't believe I forgot how awesome this was!

Love the thumbnail art and how it looks like those old western superhero comics considering that was the inspiration for MHA

If you love tournament arcs, then you need to check out Kengan Ashura. It is truly one of the best fighting manga there is. The annihilation tournament is a work of modern genius with the characters, action, drama, character design and style. The sheer variety of fighting styles able to mix and match will keep you on the edge of your seat. All of this and it subverts common tropes of the main character receiving special treatment. And the art itself is top notch

Hahahaha, oh man, if you have trouble parsing whats going on now, youll be in for a world of hurt going foward. Love the manga, absolutely love the actual art, but this has easily been one of the hardest manga to "fully" understand whats going on.

Respectfully, this season and the rest of the arcs that are already animated are very good and got me hooked on the story. For a while the manga just kept getting better and I loved it, but the last 3 or so arcs have truly ruined a lot of the characters and pacing of the story in a way that is really depressing. I am still reading it only because I have already invested my time into 400+ chapters and want to at least read the end.

The discussions MHA presents about both Stain and Endeavor to the fanbase brought to light how there’s now a generation that, because they got an immediate window to the world and its issues at an earlier age than their forerunners, but without having to go through a paced escalation of learning that kind of information. Because of that, they have grown ready to judge without understanding the nuances that form our reality, more interested in gaining a moral ground than defending a just cause.

This and the last video just make me sad about where MHA has ended up now… regardless of how you feel about it, the story and fights towards the end, to ME, do not deliver as strongly as others in the series.

Horikoshi was constantly sick during the war arc as he kept taking weakly breaks, and in my opinion such a long series delivering constant peak only to stumble at the very end is still incredibly tight compared to many staple series.

I been rewatching this series in prep for these reviews. Im halfway through s4 and s2 is still peak imo. The little details it carries (cool lil sfx moments, amazing ost placement etc) that the other seasons hasn't match so far.

There are two things in media that Horikoshi loves, Dragonball and Star Wars. Gran Torino is literally Empire Yoda.

It’s going to be time to let go soon. I only came into the fandom very recently 2022 and what this series has done for me is insane. You see I was bulllied and bullied a lot when I was a kid. That scene with Bakugo and the whole story in general healed my inner child and I was able to let go of everything. I’m probably not going to go back to the series after it ends anytime soon because it is very emotional for me, but thank you MHA for everything you’ve done 💙💙💙

I dunno if I said this on the first one, but you starting this right as me and a systemmate are watching this is wild timing, especially since your stuff (except Shorts) hasn’t been in my feed for a while. Super excited to see your thoughts as it goes on 👀 Edit because I see everyone putting their favorite fights: Uraraka vs Bakugo is the best fight of the season AND I WILL FIGHT FOR THIS

The part about paneling and confusing speech bubbles are so relatable. MHA was the first manga I've read, and I had no clue what was going on in most of the action scenes. But Hori's art is actually insane, top 3 artist in shonen imo and that alone the manga worth giving a shot.

Nothing like an amazing video essay to make me think "maybe I SHOULD rewatch all of this after all..." I really had to struggle to get past the first few episodes of my initial watch, and I'm so glad I did, this has become easily a favorite series of mine. Stain is such a well-realized Joker riff that he inspired the same reallife reaction in certain "fans."

The Ochako and Bakugo fight is also incredible for Bakugo’s character. I believe that everyone almost begging Bakugo to go easy on her versus Bakugo /respecting/ her strength by not going easy on her is very important. Especially since he views Todoroki not going all out as disrespect. It’s almost a foreshadow to the end of tournament. Glad you covered that fight in particular, it’s personally my favorite fight in the tournament for character reasons Edit: I think that an interesting point of the points of the fights being lame after Todo versus Deku, is that in the manga Horikoshi SKIPS these fights, like he knew they’d be boring, so he didn’t write them. However, I think that Bakugo vs Tokoyami is slightly important because it shows that Bakugo isn’t just overpowering power, he’s also smart and the way he uses his quirk is what really makes him powerful. I think it’s a main theme of the powers in this manga is that the Quirks are only as strong as you are creative.

That's not really on the theme of this video, but I've been watching your videos for a while and I have a strong fееling that you'd like one manga It's called "land of lustrous", there is an anime, but it only cover's the very beginning. The manga is amazing and very underappreciated. The closest things to it I could think of are Evangelion and attack on titan (the plot is more like aot, the atmosphere and themes are more like Eva) , but this one is more fantastical and less grounded (well, most characters are literally humanoid rocks...) I'll try writing this under your upcoming videos, really hope that you'll notice. If anyone else thinks Mark would like land of lustrous, please like this comment! (Sorry for any mistakes, I'm still learning English)
