I have the same experience as you, I know how you feel, my colleagues don't talk either, they are not generous at all, they just want you to make mistakes or have no progress on your career so that they can always better than you in this office, it's absolutely a loser thought, it's a zero-sum game, nobody gonna wins. I believe that people who share will bring more value to the world.

This HEAVILY mirrors my experience. I quit my job back in October 2019 for similar reasons. I'm super motivated to learn and help others. Working in a very collaborative team where each person is there to support and grow the team makes me ecstatic . Sadly it wasn't like that for a while and I hesitated for quite some time before I took the plunge. Mentoring is very important and it difficult when you are stuck with being mostly your own motivator. I just hope my next job won't be like that. Glad to hear of others experiencing similar issues, but also taking the right step to make the necessary changes.

I have just lived through this: Last September I decided to postpone the masters program I was enrolled on. I got a job that seemed great on paper and during the interview. They even sent me this really good data processing technical challenge. Turned out that I was the only Software Engineer within the office (the previous one had just left). I was one month into the company and it became very short staffed - my line manager even had me doing other peoples jobs (this was a massive red flag). It was honestly a mess... I quit the job three months in (I would have quit sooner but it was during the Christmas holidays) and it was the best decision I have ever made. I managed to land a job within a more established company and the learning / up skilling is a massive part of the culture within my squad. Never disappointed with your vids bro, top quality and content!

I completely agree with you. Currently i have been working in a company for about a year. This company has a great support for junior developers, the more experienced developers always take their time to explain the new things. But the problem here is that this company doesn't pay well, but luckly for me, I still live with my parents and they help me financially. And I am not planning to quit until the tasks i get are no more challenging.

Walaikum assalam brother. Nice advice! In my first job too I had no support as I was the only Android developer there. I had to learn everything by myself (which helped me learn the hard way but also increased my knowledge to a great degree) but without mentorship it's hard for beginners as they miss the best practices and direction for progress. In the end of the year the company had some financial issues and I had to quit. Then for four months I had studied at home and hoped for a good opportunity. The current company I'm working on contacted me and after Interviewing they offered me to join. In the first year I discovered about many best practices from my senior devs and started learning. Fast forward, now I'm leading the Android team with 4 jr developers. Still learning and also passing down the knowledge which I had learnt the hard way. 😊

That's a very good advice, man! I currently am a one man team (covid did that; it's been more than a year now) and it's my first job. I don't consider myself as juniour (apparently my manager doesn't too) but now I am working on a shitty codebase and there's no support at all. I really degrade on my skills right now and I don't feel like I am learning anything. If I do learn, it's probably only bad practices instead of best ones. I wish I wasn't too afraid to quit but soon that'll happen... I've had it enough. And your video makes a lot of sense and sometimes people need to hear it from others to feel inspired to take a move. Thanks, man!

yeah, jobs are not about $ only. a job must be fulfilling for a person. if it does not fulfill, its going to be painful, really painful and depressing, probably leave you with psychological issues like burn-out syndrome etc. its best to leave such places! $ is not all there is. $ is overrated... talking about $, i just remembered about a study or theory (dunno what it was), that one does not need a lot of money to be happy and after a cut off point, which is very low (basic survival needs covered, roof over head, food, clothes, etc.), having more money does not make you happier.

Aleyküm selam, brother :) Actually, I am in a similar situation: this is my first job and the people here are earning money doing very little. Communication is allright, but improvement is not an expected notion here. The work structure has been gradually turned into a cycle that nothing is new, and what is new is ignored in terms of new tech, the job became an empty recurring desk job. As a result, I am building a new skillset and searching for job opportunities accordingly... This kind of videos encourage me in this manner, thanks man. I appreciate it :)

I'm doing the same, most senior devs are arrogant and egotistic (a few are helpful). I'm planning to leave, in the process I'm learning new tech stacks. But I feel like I need to be completely secure with the tech I'm learning before I jump ship. In the meantime, I continue to live in the hamster wheel

Hi. After watching this video and interview with Ben I feel like I want to share my history with you :) So first of all I graduated Controls and Automation Engineering on one of Cracow University. Studies were super hard for me. It was everything there: mechanics, pneumatic, electronics, programming (which we learned by writing programs in notebooks not computers, sick!) but as I suspected this things which we learned has nothing to do with real world. When I got internship I realized that my suspicions were true. Luckily for me after 3 moths I got full time job in this company as Controls Technican. In Cracow there is not much industry so I take it without doubt. And simultaneously I did master degree on Electro technics on weekends. In job there was NO support. Once when I asked more experienced "college" about some machinery stuff he said that for him It's even better when I don't know anything and said me nothing. At that time I had very big thoughts if I am in the right place but I had no experience and I knew how small my knowledge was and still had to pay my bills so I stayed there. I eventually graduated master in July 2019 and also become one of the best in my company. But here is the thing. After this time I make my toughs and I know that if not my obstinacy i would learn nothing. That is why soon after graduation I decided to learn programming. It was beginning of august. I simply take my Head First book (I tough that book from 2012 can't be that old. It was about java 5 :D) and started to read. Fortunately soon after I told about my plans to friend which works as Java developer and she agreed to be my mentor. And I think it is very very hard if you want to learn programming without any support from someone more experienced than you :) My target was to get an internship during spring so I learned 2h every day after work. I think I have enough skills now to change the job but because of coronavirus I need to wait month or two. But to sum it up I also believe that if you not learning in current job you should do sth about it. Also doing almost the same thing every day is not for me. It's just not me and I feel like I want sth more from my life. And I know that for sure that I will not get good money in programming at the beginning but I is about developing my skills and myself and I think in long term it is worth it. And even if you don't learn everyday or you doing just little it is still better than doing nothing. I hope that my effort will payoff in future and I wish it also for you guys!

You're right. Currently I am at that level where I'm not learning anymore at my company. All I'm doing is just codes and codes. To the point where I can finish my use case twice or three times faster than the others. Staring at the laptop screen blankly, no idea what to do. Improving company process during my free time. Read someone else's codes and try to improve it. It gets extremely boring. I don't ever want to become a team lead here because the team lead role (in this company) is prohibited from coding (the work is even more dull).
