I QUIT MY JOB...but I am HAPPY (Why I left Teaching)

Why I quit my job as a teacher. I just wanted to update you guys on whats going on. No worries, videos will still be happening. I love making content. This video has nothing to do with my typical content, but I am hoping that maybe other teachers or people of power might realize that teachers are really trying their best to provide the best education but it has become difficult. Consider this a rant or a venting session if anything.

For me it’s solely the Administration they’ll throw you under the bus in a heart beat! This has happen to me three times in my thirteen years teaching. I’m going to relocate and I’ve decided to pursue other careers. A lot of good teachers are pushed out especially in Title 1 schools. As the only black staff member in my school, it was difficult. Administration would always give me a hard time. My data shows growth for at least 90% of my students. I’m gone because they had one position (yearly contract) and the Administration hired their friend with no experience. But I take it as a blessing because I don’t have to deal with the subtle bigotry, stares, fake friendships. Everything happens for a reason.

I'm about to throw the towel .I'm done fighting also. I could go into details but pretty much is the same. Teachers are teaching scripted lessons or how they sell it .."prescribed" solutions to students. After 15 years ...I'm totally done. Right now ..I'm just going with the flow ....until I get something else. But Every day I cry on the way to work. But its hard to line up another job ...that pays the bills. My wife and I are both teachers , we barely make it financially every moth . But is going to be hard to get a job where I'm at . The city is not big and moving is not an option ...I'm looking into real estate , becoming a trucker or .......going back to college and getting a 2 year degree on something. For know ...I'm holding maybe after January...don't want to ruin Christmas for my family ...its already looking bleak..don't want to add to the stress of looking for a job on Christmas day.

Kept in touch with the one's that struggled, even years after they graduated and she always donated items for her homeless students. She was actually in newspapers across the country and world for the things she did. Her name is Sinita Scott. You can Google her if you like. The story should come up. You are going to go far. Everything you just talked about is 100% true. I taught high school for 10 years...I miss my students so much! I have been fortunate enough to keep in touch with a few. I couldn't handle being told that I care too much or that I'm doing too much like making sure I had food in my room for any student who was hungry or buying diapers for a single mom who just needed a little help until she graduated and could work more hours. I was always being put down for helping those who needed me. Like you, I just couldn't do it anymore.

Little late to watching this, but this is great man! Quitting something you once loved is a tough thing and something that a lot of people have a though time relating to it. I have done it twice in my career, so if you ever want to talk about it or get some advice, I'm open. Good news is each time I did it, I used the time to make some major life moves and wouldn't have the job I have now without it. And wouldn't be able to make KZbin videos as mostly a hobby.

This video is the only thing getting me to work today. I had to finally quit. I can’t handle all the exact things you just named. I teach special education, and I can’t watch my students decline anymore because my hands are tied. I feel like a failure leaving my students mid year. It’s HEART BREAKING. It’s so severely devastated. I’m not a quitter. But being looked down upon for being an advocate and wanting to do what’s right for my kids.

I just resigned in January after almost 20 years of teaching 3rd-5th grades. The school that I was at this year had behavior problems that I hadn't seen in such volume. My BP was sky high and I was miserable. Now I don't know what I'll end up doing and working online right now. Oh...after all those years my annual teacher salary was $45,522. I have two sons. One is in his 2nd year of college and a computer science. My other son is a junior in high school and wants to be a pharmacist. I told them long ago not to go into teaching. It has been my dream and my passion for years, just too many headaches to do it now. Very sad!!!

You have it all figured out. Nailed it. I’m so glad I found your video! You are an amazing person and the education field is less for having lost you. I’ve been teaching for 22 years. It’s been my life calling and passion. I’ve regrettably compromised my own family’s needs, at times, to meet the demands of this profession. I’ve been nominated Teacher of the Year three times, received numerous awards and recognitions from peers, and accolades from parents and students. I’m burned out. I had a crushing year last year, dealing with an impossible situation and the fall out from terrible decisions by my admins. I fought two nervous breakdowns, spent a fortune on copays for docs and therapists (trying to avoid having to go on medical leave because my husband - a hardworking and beloved teacher- was already on medical leave because his combat related PTSD was triggered by the Parkland shooting and having to deal with harassment from a dysfunctional & insecure principal) and was barely getting by financially. Things are much better this year but I see things differently now. I realize how expendable I am and how little my 110% efforts are appreciated. It’s not that I’m bitter but I finally see the reality of how broken our system is and how expendable high achieving teachers are to school districts. They’d replace us with three, new, inexperienced or even poor performing teachers in a heartbeat because it saves them money. I had been in serious denial before last year, always sugar coating and believing I could influence positive change. I now see that I’m only hurting my health and putting other people above my own family and life. I’m looking for a position out of the classroom because I still love working with kids but don’t want classroom responsibilities anymore. The newest demands aren’t worth our meager pay. I could justify my low pay before because of my optimistic outlook. My husband and I are also making lifestyle changes so that we can live off much less. I hope to get an ESL teaching position so I can experience something different before I retire early. I’ve loved my ESL teacher coursework. It brings the passion back! I’m excited about shedding the day to day grind of classroom teacher responsibilities and getting to work with small groups of students and their teachers. As a bilingual/bicultural person, ESL is something I feel passionate about. I’ll resign before serving another year as a classroom teacher. I’ve seen so many classroom teachers retire and only live a short time after, or face terrible health issues, because they’ve compromised their health for this field. All the best to you and your future endeavors! This video was exactly what I needed today!

Thank you for your honesty Jami, I agree 100 % with your choice. Here in Germany the situation is actually quite similar. Too many regulations and restrictions. And that's not even the worst thing about the German educational system (There are 16 different ministries in 16 different counties passing different policies every other year, for a country with barely 12 million children .. and it creates nothing but confusion). I sincerely hope you find a way to make a difference elsewhere :). You're a role model and an inspiration!

When you talked about you saying, 'Yes' to one thing, then the school switching things on you, you described my life with my school. I'm so nervous every time I agree to something, because whenever I turn up for my day, I find something's been changed, and I end up doing a whole suite of sh*t that I absolutely hate. They just see a warm, competent body and exploit the hell out of you. I also have to teach to an extremely prescriptive program and the culture of the school is 'marks-orientated'. If it's not going to be in the test, the students don't want to know. The amount of useless administration and 'bs' is increasing every year too. It's awful. I told them I was quitting, they offered part-time so I could pursue other things, but I just know that the whole 'warm, competent body' thing won't die, and my life will somehow be taken right over again. I'm paid for 7 hrs of work per day, but I work an average of 12, and 5-8 on weekends. The pay is pathetic given the hours worked and the sh*t you have to put up with every day (not every teenager is a joy to work with).

Have you tried high school teaching? I don't know if it's a thing in your district, but in my county (Montgomery county, MD) we have accelerated programs and from a guy who tested into one, the teachers get to teach outside of the system, they talk with other teachers to come up with the curriculum, and the students are usually bright enough to not have to worry about numbers. I don't know your qualifications, but if you can, try teaching a magnet program or something.

You took a great decision! There is no price for our birthright: freedom!!!!!!! It's very healthy to not be part of a toxic system. It's awesome that you are planning to sub, I think that's more enjoyable!!! Plus you don't have extra work after school, and no meetings with staff and parents. Money is good, but not as good as your peace, happiness, joy, and freedom!!!! I know of teachers that hate their job, and stay in a classroom living a nightmare. As a result, they end up ill. and some with serious illness, and the ones up there, don;t care. They just care for the numbers, and that's it! It's the reality! The system is F.O.S.

Bruh you have to do what's best for you. There are alot if people going to a job that they dont like that do not fulfill their need for growth because of a paycheck dealing with people that they hate.

Good for him for standing his ground. Unfortunately, this is the reality of the workplace---with politics, bs, and paying your bills. Sometimes you have to put up with the bs until you have plan B in place.

Thank you for your video! I’m ready to call it quits after 8 years of teaching but I don’t know what else to do? What do teachers do to make money after quitting?
@JamisonMichael

Thanks for the comment! 8 years strong is admirable. I personally just started over. Started taking sub jobs, started building on my other interests. (Right now just creating videos). Freelance videos for small business. I also have an hourly job that I work. Occasionally I’ll get sponsorship for s KZbin video. Just finding small streams of income. I’ve fortunately received job offers to do videos full time for a company, but I realized that I’m in a very happy place and wanted to build on myself a bit longer. Definitely had to lower my spending, but it is scary. Teachers have so many skills that we’ve acquired. Most employers are happy to have us cause we’re so versatile in our work ethic, creativity, time management, patience, and being able to differentiate our methods depending what is needed to get the job done. You are so used to having to wear so many different hats..we are the ultimate job applicants 🙌

I have a good friend that's a high school Physics teacher. He echoes every sentiment you made in this video and wanted to quit too many times. Thing is he has a 2 year old and an 8 year old so needed to provide for them. But you will make it in this media influencer role just because I can feel your enthusiasm. PS are you really dating mary beth? lol

Here in the Philippines there is a literal political party called A.C.T(Alliance of Concerned Teachers) that have been trying to do their best to keep teachers a float but I must say the politics are hell especially when it gets to the point that teachers had to form their own political party to stop more bs

I teach in a title 1 school that gets new administration every 2 years. The newest crew are egomaniacs who are only friendly if you bow down and suck up to them. I am beyond burned out and my own sons are feeling the brunt of my exhaustion. But how the hell am I supposed to feed them??? I’m stuck.
