11: Why I quit teaching, the story you have to hear to believe.

As most of you know, I am a retired school teacher. Yep at the ripe old age of 26 I retired from the classroom and hung up my red pen. However, I bet money that you don’t know the true (although unbelievable story) of why I ultimately decided to leave the classroom. This story is guaranteed to make your jaw drop. Before I tell that story, here is my background of how and why I got into education, plus the biggest life lessons I learned from teaching.

I taught for 12 years and didn’t realize how miserable teaching made my whole existence. I absolutely loved my students and lived and breathed for them but administrators parents and test scores did me in. I remember feeling relieved when I was diagnosed with a rare neurological disease that has impacted by entire life because I knew I would finally leave teaching. I am finally taking care of myself and even with this disease I feel better than I have in years.

Interesting that you would say that. I was once at the hospital having emergency surgery. The next day a colleague called me from my hospital bed, and told me "lucky you!" She wished she were in my situation. That says it all.

Unfortunately, speaking the truth to some parents can create a negative environment especially on report card days. Some parents are in complete denial and believe it's all the teacher's fault.

I work in a Title 1 school. Everyone gets free lunch. And interestingly, most of these kids leave school early for their trips to Disney. Multiple trips to Disney. Who knew "poverty" was so great?!

Teaching~ I LOVED it. Started in the early '90s. Took some years off to raise my own children. Went back. I was still able to navigate well after years away. Thank God. Usually, most parents were very supportive. I had good relationships with kids and parents and the administration. Then the pressure of high-stakes testing came in. I learned how to do what the school district wanted although it was not good for those kids. I tried my very best to balance all that testing with plenty of joy and love in my own classroom with great hands-on projects. The kids did phenomenally. Lots of encouragement ~and they would also encourage each other. I loved that! I put their QUALITY hard work of joy and creativity out in the hallway year after year. Usually would update those about once a month. However, I was criticized heavily, ostracized, and belittled by my own grade level "team." I was shunned, talked about, ridiculed, and lied about to others by this "team.". I tried my best to shake it off daily. I would go into my own classroom and open up the best space possible to enjoy those kids and love, love love on them. And, I LOVED it still! We would laugh and be silly. I taught them practical helps to keep them focused and strong. They ate it up. Those kids were, for the most part, very cooperative, caring, and hard-working. Crazy hours ~ easy 11 hour days ~ every single day. Then every weekend it was a lot of prep and work for the upcoming week. I thought I could do well even under those conditions but the mean-spirited "team level" approach was really very burdensome and hateful. They would have meetings without me, talk down to me frequently, accuse me,. My health began to take a downturn spiral. I resigned before school began in August 2020.

The American education system is broken. The sense of humanity empathy and compassion in general society is severely lacking. The next generation is lost and by our hands Parents refuse to stand solid to their children. No is considered child abuse and they teach a sense of entitlement. We will reap what we've sown. Teachers have so much to overcome so much. In the end it's society that will pay this bill. To all good teachers parents and people. Please keep your lights strong. We truly need you for the darkness that is now in full swing.

@ It's funny because now we do have virtual classrooms and it just doesn't work for the majority. Children have low attention spans and will play their video games over logging on to work. Parents are lazy and unhelpful so they will allow it and pretend they encourage their children to work. Physical classrooms teaches children routine, structure, social emotional learning, cooperation, collabortation, gross motor skills, etc. It's not just tests and hw. That's why most homeschooled kids are socially awkward.

Whoa..my second year teaching I was threatened from my student's older siblings that they would be waiting for me in the parking lot (the student was the sweetest, btw). To actually have been assaulted? That's insane...and to have admin joke about it? Disgusting. It's scary when the bullies are the ones in charge💔 I quit after my 3rd year and 3 weeks before school ended (now 13 years ago) I've carried so much guilt and shame all of these years for not feeling tough enough to stick it out, after hearing all of these quitting stories has been so healing!! ok my aunt was a principle.what she did was when kids were acting up she would call the parents and make them come get them.no matter if they were working or what ever didn't matter just come get your kid.in every case bonce a parent realized they would have to take responsibility u started seeing a change in those kids.

And your aunt would do what when the parents never showed up? Parents will tell you they are 'busy' at 'work' all true, but for many people their kids are prime above all. But not all parents.

shane: I totally respect your principle, but that is a policy that would never fly at my school. I suspect it wouldn't fly in most schools, considering today's climate. Most principles today would be fired for such a policy. Principles are being told that students MUST stay in class, not matter what they are doing. - It's just one sign of how far broken the educational system has become.

Educators need to stop saying “I am not in this profession for the money”. When we say that, it undervalues our worth to our society and justifies how we are viewed in the United States. When we say those words of not being in it for the money just continues the notion that teachers do not deserve better pay and working environments.

Sadly, she sugar coated it all. I have done my last semester. Is it worth it after 15 years of teaching, no it's not. It will get a lot worse even though most can not even imagine how bad it has already become. I had it easier than most because I was a 245 lb muscled up man. Society should question why thousands of teachers, national wide are quitting the profession.

I've been a private tutor for 26 years. The best part is that I don't have to deal with uncooperative and incorrigible students (or crazy parents for that matter). If the student becomes a problem, I withdraw my services.

I just watched a documentary were the Teacher had statistics showing that 50% of Teachers quit by the five year mark. If, they make it that far. Really sad. But, no problem can be corrected without support.

In my county they give the bulk of the raise money allotted to the first five year teachers to lure them in. The further along you are, you get so little in raises that by year 20, you are making only a couple thousand more than first year teachers.

That is quite a story,...how awful,..something so terrible happened to a such a positive soul like yours. Though I am 100 years older than u r, I am also a woman of color, I can relate to your kind of "quirkiness " as well as the "save the world " mentality. Unfortunately, u r correct, it is pretty naive. So sorry you had to experience what sounds like to me a series of purposeful events intended to get you on the happy and successful track that u r on now. But what a loss to the classroom. I can appreciate your list of lessons learned and if I could let go of a workplace situation that happened to me back in 2012, maybe I could find the lesson. It was awful workg for someone who treated me like crap. Yes, of course I hv made tons of mistakes in life but like you alluded to I had and still hv expectations of those who are supposed to be leaders. A couple of things come to mind however abt what I may hv learned, the first is that people w nt always tell u tb truth about who u r when they are offended, ...I am the opposite--2nd I hv learned that people project their insecurities on to you as a way to pull you down--- if I hv ever bn that way, God forbid, I have asked forgiveness--and I have learned that life is precious and that maybe I do not need to ultimately become a teacher. Maybe I can be a little too quirky and naive unless it is adult educ which probably dz nt pay well. I taught for eleven years (high school aged teens in the Caribbean). I never wanted to teach, basically all that kids stuff is not for me. Some of the things that made me leave: being treated unfairly by admin when I would not suck up and when I decided to let parents know what their kids were doing. Also, a principal who was married, invited me into his office and basically tried to be inappropriate. The complaints avenue was an office filled with men who told me 'Maybe he was just joking". the same principal used to make veiled, insulting comments towards me in front of the school. There were lots of run ins with parents who encouraged the laziness and ill behavior of their kids. I was sooo done. I even started to develop medical issues because of stress. During one of my last days at that job, the same inhuman principal decided to apologise privately. Nope. Even family members and associates make comments asking/ telling me to go back to teach. No, you all can teach. This taught me that I should have isolated myself early on from those people who wanted me to teach. They just wanted to be financially dependent on me. If I could have done this over I would have migrated to another country with more options in my field.

Sounds like your teaching experience wasn't a wholesome one. I hope you know Administrators should always have your back. I'm a teacher too, actually NRA weapons instructor. Tough students come in all ages. Out of the 2000+ students I've certified to carry concealed approximately 80-100 students couldn't read the test. These were all adults over 21 in South Carolina. So you see, if teachers and parents can't make these kids learn to read, they come to me and want to carry a gun. There's no law against illiterate people with CWPs. That's why it's so important. It's good to hear you are still teaching though.

I am so sad to hear what happened to you. That should never have happened. I am an educator and years ago when I was around your age a parent of one of my students somehow slipped past the office and came into my classroom and started verbally assaulting me. I had no idea what was going on, why this parent was angry, nothing. At the break, I mentioned the incident to the secretary and she was alarmed that a parent had come in without checking in at the office as they were required to. I also found out that the principal had spoken to this parent and I was never informed of the conversation and any of the concerns the parent had. I felt left out, disrespected, and unsettled. I was too young at the time to take control of the situation and discuss the incident further and make sure I was on the same page with the principal and the parent. However, I have never aloud parents to disrespect me since.

This is horrifying!!!! As soon as you saw them in the gym you should have got the hell out of that room to protect yourself!! I'm so sorry for what you went through, that is seriously traumatizing and you were only doing your job and trying to protect the child. You may even want to seek therapy as this is a really scary thing to go through, and then on top of it, the PRINCIPAL made a joke out of it!! The way he acted was disgusting, cruel and shameful. I do not blame you ONE BIT for getting the hell out of there - a place where you are laughed at after being violently assaulted, but the people who are supposed to protect you!! I disagree with getting a restraining order. I feel that this was over - reacting and crossing boundaries. This is embarrassing for the students individually and their family as a whole. When students feel singled out and hurt, parents can and will over - react. You never know what is going on in their home life behind the poor attendance. I would have spoken to my principal and received advice before taking such drastic measures. It often takes time to feel out the situation. A stylist is not a teacher. Volunteering and reading a story is not teaching. Teaching is teaching, and it requires love, devotion, time, and consistency. Students who feel supported, respected, and loved win over parents who see this, and before you know it, with patience and care, and most of all trust, attendance picks up.

Wait a minute! I taught Language Arts in secondary schools in Florida, 31 years and 28 in a tough Miami school. I've been retired now four years, written four novels and can't get published because I'm told I need a platform. The only platform I have was I was a public school teacher, and that's nothing apparently since I'm among thousands who used to teach. Nothing special. So, how does she get published? Her platform was teaching. And I could write nonfiction. I've got plenty to say how I was roughed up as a teacher, and I bet my ideas on school reform are plenty page turning. She gets published. But me, I've sent out years of synopses and nobody wants to publish me. Of course I may not be as talented as this lady. Maybe. Maybe.

Dear one, I'm really sorry that happened to you. One of our most valuable national treasures are teachers. Yet this has nothing to do with you being in the noblest of professions, what we are witnessing is what a nation becomes when God is systemically removed and rejected from all institutions. That's an ignorant comment. A lot of European countries are secular and do well, it's not about religion. It's about lazy parents who won't discipline their children. All parents should be mandated to take a course on discipline and a seminar each school year regarding respect and supporting your child.

Thanks for posting this. A little constructive criticism, don’t be sarcastic: “Filing a restraining order against a child. That was fun.” “And I was also trying to plan my wedding. No big deal.” Otherwise beginning teachers and tax payers need to know your reality. Also, it might be helpful for you to know your staff felt they could make fun of you because of your high level of attractiveness. Being in the teaching game 14 years (elem, middle, and high school), I can tell you the attractive female teachers have escape options that most teachers simply don’t. Pretty much old fashioned jealousy.

But, was it worse than being a hated cop or lawyer or having bombs thrown at you as a soldier? Someone has to work in the sewers and slaughterhouses and I'm sure many of them would rather be working in a temperature controlled clean environment. I'm glad your emotional needs were fulfilled. Be sure you tell all those men toiling away to keep the world safe and running that they should concern themselves with their own emotional needs and learn to code or something.

@@misterb1132 Sure, they would -- if you expected them to teach plumbing, butchering or other trade skills. A teacher goes to college to teach a particular subject or (in the case of younger students, basic subjects of math, science, history, etc.). Surely by the time a teacher earns that degree and certification; he should be able to teach. He should be able to follow a standard course teaching plan. Given a few weeks of practice under a mentor; a plumber should be able to teach plumbing. These kinds of teachers are --- Shop Teachers.

Wow, this is a sad video but not for the reasons you may think. It is sad because it is clear you (Deidra Murphy) lack the necessary empathy to be an effective teacher. Do you understand the unique needs of Title I students; their holistic characteristics? You created and fueled the entire confrontation with your student's parent. I think you were upset about the mother yelling at you and retaliated against her by initiating court intervention to have the parent fined. Title I parents do not even have money for food and rent, but you think fining the family will solve an attendance problem. You had no business teaching in the first place. You are cold and unkind!

The person lacking empathy is you. Furthermore, you sound like an enabler. How incredibly stupid and naive of you to make the assumption what money kids in a title one school have or do not have. They apparently had enough for mom to have a car and a family membership at a gym. In my over two decades of experience teaching and living in the inner city, I will tell you point blank that most families have more money than the teachers and since they do not have to prioritize it on food or education, it is spent on shoes, cars, and clothing, as well as other luxury items. There are some kids, of course, who have virtually nothing, but that is not the majority.

THEY chose to scream at the teacher. THEY chose to commit violence against an innocent teacher for no reason. But you're trying to blame their behavior on the teacher!
