It's not a consolation I know that academia is like this elsewhere in the world too- from Australia so much of this resonates with experiences here. Great video! I saw your interview with Dr Jas and checked out your channel. If you don't mind me asking, did you have any direct UX experience when you first started applying for jobs, or was it more about translating your academic work?

Matt, I had considered UX too. But I found that a lot of the jobs were demanding quant expertise (I'm a human sciences graduate). Was that an issue for you, or did you already have a high level of expertise in quant (stats etc)? Do you have a website I could visit?
