I quit my job as a professor too! Very relatable video to watch.

Thank you for being so honest. Academia is not an easy career in any country.

Congrats for taking control of your destiny, dude! You are an inspiration to all of those academics who feel “lucky just to have a job.”

I just got Tenure and the insulting raise doesn't even recoup inflation. There are so many things I love about this job, but the exploitation is appalling and I know I am worth so much more

Hey! No worries. The students were generally great (you and Patrick were the best I had at UDM). If you're on LInkedIn, shoot me a message and connect! I was always/and am so impressed by your work.

Thanks for sharing, and congratulations on finding a new job that is stimulating, rewarding, and allows for work-life balance. It's a real loss to the university. I did enjoy your older videos and gave links to my students in my chem courses.

3:46 "I worked too much- that tends to happen when you view your job as a calling and not just an occupation." Man, I could really relate to that statement. Thank you for saying that.

This overview of modern academia is so frighteningly accurate 🤣. Still planning on the stick-it-out-it-out-'til-I-die route, but nail-on-the-head nonetheless.

Congrats for the move out of academia! Really enjoyed your educational content and helped me think about my online teaching. It's not a consolation I know that academia is like this elsewhere in the world too- from Australia so much of this resonates with experiences here. I'm in my dream job (first ongoing - tenured- position) and so often it is hard to see why I do this to myself. Good luck with your future career!

I found your channel through your “professor’s EDC” video and had no idea you taught at APSU! I did some GTA work there during grad and that’s what led me to pursue a career in academia. I’d love to chat more about your experiences and I sent you a friend request on LinkedIn.

Extremely well said! You say it so well, it's enjoyable. I have a bit of the same path: transitioning from teaching social sciences to user research. Good luck with your future career!

This was very relatable. I did the same this summer, and the pay and first name basis are a nice change. I’m STEM but would be interested to here more about how you transitioned from academia to UX.
@UXmatt2 жыл бұрын
Congrats to you! I'm working on some future videos about the transition process. I'd be interested in getting the STEM perspective too. I have several friends in chemistry and engineering who are much happier in their new roles outside academia.

Great video! I saw your interview with Dr Jas and checked out your channel. If you don't mind me asking, did you have any direct UX experience when you first started applying for jobs, or was it more about translating your academic work?
@kennybrhouston Жыл бұрын
Matt, I had considered UX too. But I found that a lot of the jobs were demanding quant expertise (I'm a human sciences graduate). Was that an issue for you, or did you already have a high level of expertise in quant (stats etc)? Do you have a website I could visit?

Out of curiousity, is this channel some sort of income booster? If not, and you're willing to help I'd appreciate it if we can chat a bit 1 on 1

Sorry for the slow reply. The channel is technically monetized now. Thus far, I've made something like $250 over the last maybe 2-3 years. Shoot me an email. If you go to digital-pedagogy.com and send a message via the contact form it'll got to my gmail!
