It’s a little off topic but that’s so true. We weren’t made to know everything that’s going on. I personally have a Christian family member whom I love dearly but they’re so into everything that’s going on in the world, and all the signs “for propaganda reasons” that they’re so obsessed over it and instead of preaching God’s love they’re preaching signs… I do need a social media detox, I just have a hard time doing it! 😫

I find this so inspiring because I’ve been feeling like I need to detox from social media! One thing that helps me when I have instagram is I have muted all of the people that I follow except the close family and friends i like to keep updated with. This helps me from scrolling and allows me to still feel connected! It’s a long process to mute about 150-200 people but it’s worth it!

Momma here. I completely understand. I got rid of social media after my 2nd, and I was less stressed, more present, and more in tune with my spouse. I think in some ways we're not meant to have it but somehow we do and it makes people less social and less talkative.

Oh my god needed this sign! It’s quite a lot of effort and I think we’re so comfortable with being on about phones but it’s for the better to set time limits and reduce our usage. I am trying to reduce my screen time and start doing little things everyday instead of scrolling for hours. I am going to embrace this new routine in July and just suddenly significantly reduce me screen time. And I think the key is not telling anyone you’re going to do it but just go ahead and do it and then tell them!!

I've done social media detox before and it just feels amazing. It allowed me to focus on myself because in social media esp. instagram, it made me compare myself to other people. I deleted tiktok last year and still didn't installed it back, then i also deleted Instagram, Facebook, twitter and stopped watching KZbin. It was really the best thing for me and was a great help for me focusing on my studies. I started to have better grades and appreciate the things and people around me more. I stopped looking at people’s sorries maybe about a year ago, but I deleted my social media apps completely in March, except for KZbin. I rarely comment on videos so I don’t really count it as “social” media, I mainly watch videos that I can play in the background while I’m walking or cleaning the same way I do with podcasts. But I wanted to input on this one because it definitely was one of the best things I could have done for myself. Social media is a good way to connect, but it’s also such a toxic place and so bad for you. I wish everyone would regularly take time off of social media, I feel like we would all be a lot happier.

I've let myself watch stories and catch up on friends posts for about 10 minutes then if I clicked on reels or started looking at things from not friends or family I immediately got off the app. I still watched youtube (on computer instead of phone) or a show because I can do productive things while I do that. It's been so freeing and I've been trying to find things to do with all the extra time during the day.

From the people I am around, I have noticed my generation (Gen Z) is able to be off their phone and enjoy time with others and/or do something without technology. I’m always hearing my friends say "Ugh, I need to do something other than stare at my screen!" However, with older generations I’ve noticed they will be on their laptop or phone. Many times a family member of mine and I will be out to lunch and I’m trying to talk to her, and she’s just on her phone scrolling the whole time.

I deleted TikTok and Instagram a few months ago. Was supposed to be just for a small period of time when I had a lot to study. Never returned though, it's just so much better for my time management and productivity and mental health.
@islandsociete Жыл бұрын
I use the Unhook chrome browser extension to limit what gets shown on KZbin. I.e. I have no home page, no recommended videos etc. All I can see are the ~10 channels I subscribe to (I removed like 50 subscriptions) so I can be more intentional with what I watch. So basically youtube is now a very personal channel with only a select number of videos to watch. I have all social media including youtube deleted from my phone. And I only have access to them on my iPad which only stays in one room and becomes a very intentional media device (I have no TV). It's also my business and study device. The good thing about instagram on iPad is that it's not addicting for me and it's easy to forget about (it loses the effect of picking up a phone from boredom and you don't carry it everywhere).
@islandsociete Жыл бұрын
Additionally, I have two phones. My iPhone is what I use for business and back-up (it has social media for my business, editing apps, production etc.), and my Samsung is my personal device. Having a dedicated phone for their own purposes is so useful. It removes the link from "I need my phone on me because it has these apps because it's my business" to having one device just that feels business and doesn't feel addicting (that I don't need to take everywhere, and can leave in a bag or my room if ever), and then my personal phone just becomes texts, quick browsing and all things that I know is me - it gives back so much control, personally. So I recommend two phones - one for business, and one for personal that is your main device you keep on you.

I like how you said that you “can’t delete all your social media apps” but mentioned also that that’s an excuse. It shows that you are very aware. Even our jobs can become an excuse. Ultimately it is still our choice how much we are willing to surrender to do such a challenge but ofcourse no judgment here, it is always our choice between us and God and not for others to judge. But it really challenged me internally when you said that because i realised it is true, it is never that we can’t do something but how much we are really willing to go all out to do it.

Cant say I’ve ever actually deleted the apps 🙈 but I do have some boundaries that I’m finally following that are helpful! 1. 20 min time limit for Facebook and Instagram 2. I also did no KZbin videos for a month! Took me a month to binge yours and the other few families I follow 😅 3. I “muted” a few hundred, and I do mean hundreds, of stories so that I would only see my actual friends stories and I watch about 5-10 before scrolling to catch up on big news (if you’re not on much, the most important news comes up in the first few posts), and then a few minutes answering DMs 4. I pretty much don’t watch TV (but when I do, I binge 😂) but typically watch cozy KZbin videos or working on personal development. 5. Mornings I look at my phones screen to see if there are any main notifications but I have notification settings set so that the badge app doesn’t show if it’s an app I have a set time for (eg emails, socials, etc) but I still see the notification on my homepage. The quick check is just in case of emergency. 6. I use Alexa as an alarm! 7. When I come home from work, I check my emails and finances/budget, but then work on personal projects/hobbies or read! I’m a bit worried for kids who just watch content rather than get creative themselves and learn skills for themselves! Gotta learn to learn new things haha. But I’m trying to learn that I can actually rest and not worry if someone needs me one day a week, I would LOVE to be able to actually shut off my whole phone for a day, so that I can’t even be “productive.” I’m working toward that! But I feel for you, there’s no shame in using socials for work, since it’s your job! Most of us can’t say that 😅

I believe our hearts and minds aren’t meant to know about so many peoples lives also. I unfollowed a lot of people (you can always silence them versus unfollowing) , and created a new rule for myself - if I don’t talk to this person in real life I won’t follow them, with the exception of a few bloggers. It’s really minimized my feed and I see the people I want to know about ! I also take around 3 social media breaks a year. Social media has its benefits but I think to use it healthily we need to be okay with taking occasional breaks from it.
