Moved to Paphos 2003 - sad to leave the UK, but my wife and I could see what was happening to the UK. The rise in crime was the biggest motivator - many places we had stopped going in the evening and even some during the daytime (Come from the West Midlands) - crime has increased during the last 20 years in Cyprus (Mainly property and not against people), but nothing like the scale of the UK. Cyprus is a great country to live in, but not for young family's, good employment with good salaries is hard to find. We retired in Cyprus and the Cypriots have been very welcoming.

Thank you, that’s appreciated. I’m trying to be realistic rather than political. But the reality is that we have the strong memories of what the UK was and what it has become, we are able to make comparisons from experience not heresay. We both know that there were many bad things in our earlier times, I grew up in a condemned Victorian council house with no bathroom, an outside toilet, damp with spores growing and rats & mice in the wall space. Those days were gone (but I’m seeing them return) but we had strong community and a more positive attitude to the future, the NHS was new and it worked, we had respect not woke. It makes me sad for the UK, not angry. I could go on for hours but I won’t. Suffice to say welcome to the channel and thank you for the comment.

I watched a program on immigration & emigration , on average 500,000 professionals leave the uk for a better salary and less tax’s. We are officially the most taxed country in the world. We loose our best Doctors,Nurses, Engineers. Uk diluting its professional workforce with people doctors & nurses from ie,Africa, Asia, These countries have their own shortages and can’t afford loose doctors & nurses to the uk. We also let in people with no trades or qualifications, majority on benefits, it’s this that boils the blood of every British working man. You can’t just decide to move to Australia with nothing but a back pack , no money, no trade or recognisable qualifications, so why is our government a soft touch on 100,000’s Muslim illegal immigrants who with no I.D , no idea who they are. We don’t even take blood samples to catalogue DNA to keep a record of them and who they say they are. So bad is it we kick out some young Muslim lad , he comes back on a dingy, lies of his age saying he’s 15 when he is actually 20 approx . Gets put through school, get looked after. Then he goes out and knifes a young 21 yr old marine. Our system, our Government is a absolute joke ,they are letting this all ruin our children’s future. This was once a safe place to live. No country in the world where Islamist populate is a peaceful one They need to go fast sending a message . I don’t want my tax monies being squandered on these illegal immigrants. Any other country would at most give them a tent.

I would love to go and live in Paphos myself. We visit there quite frequently and I lived in Cyprus as a child. However my kids are still growing up and my business wouldn't work over there. The reasons I would most want to move there would be 1: The weather of course (though it can get a bit too hot for long walks!) and 2: Brexit, which has deeply damaged the UK economy. Even the people who voted for it will admit that. The economic damage, the divisions and political fallout will last for decades. As for immigration, I know of someone who left Paphos for the UK because immigration to Cyprus and an increase in lawlessness from a certain community.

Yes, per capita their illegal immigration is actually worse than Englands, it’s causing issues over there, the cost of living, especially food and property is climbing at a high rate. But there is still a strong sense of community over there, a slower pace of life (I’m not looking to be out clubbing anymore as an overweight 63 year old lol), much lower crime, lower taxes, noticeably respect from the young toward the elders and a whole load of other things. I’m equating the lifestyle (excluding the weather) to how my part of the UK was (Cumbria & Northumbria) 25 years ago just with more technology. I say that in a positive way. Yes Cyprus is changing and rapidly toward the way life is here, but if I last 20 more years until 83 then I’ll have that much better lifestyle than being here. Indeed over the next 20 years I truly believe the UK is going to get so much worse. And as you mention….the weather. I’d rather be oppressed in the sunshine and warm than the rain and cold for the rest of my days. Thanks for the well wishes.

Im 38 and ive noticed the UK has become a place where you are no longer a "Customer", its big corp nobody really cares its just management and workers, the shareholders collect the winnings. I remember a society that was alot more cohesive when i was a kid, it was not perfect, but even at my very first victorian primary school it had memories attached to it from long ago, teachers were remembered as far back as the 1920s with shields engraved with their names, i took my daughter to the same school which was partially torn down and rebuilt under Labour 2002, replacing tyres and log with a actual park, tarmac over football field grass and a very gated secure premises, not a sniff of any of those teachers are remembered anywhere, there is no culture in the school, the teachers are literally forgotten about ! My dad actually wrote his name on a wooden desk in 1960's i wrote mine next to it in 1993 ! Obviously thats gone to ! Its just a general apathy, hope you enjoy it there.

I know Paphos very well, as I spend February and March there every year. The weather can be changeable and rainy at that time of year, but it´s much better than in England. I think the prices in the supermarkets are similar to those in England. There are a two Lidl supermarkets there now. The thing I don´t like, however, is the litter everywhere. There are often spaces strewn with the stuff. I find it all quite depressing. I´ve been to Greece many times and it´s the same there, too. The British tend to live in an ex-pat bubble and most don´t speak any or very little Greek. Many houses and flats on the ground floor suffer from rising damp, so be very careful if you´re thinking of buying a property.

Me and the wife did this move way back in 2006 , and by the looks of things back home it's the best decision we've ever made . When you reach retirement age you start to look for quality of life and cyprus has this . For me it's the weather , very low crime rates , and no traffic jams whatsoever . Two examples I'll give are I had to visit the hospital with breathing difficulties and was in and out in under one hour . The other is I left the house to do five quick local errands and was back in my house after 50 minutes . I wouldn't move back to the UK even if you paid me as it's become something I do not recognize any more .

He'll really feel the heat as it was barely under 40C for months. The price of food has really increased in the last few years and the food isn't as fresh as it once was - Lidl seems to be where all the expats shop.
@PathToPaphos2 ай бұрын
Yes, we were out there earlier this year with the temp in the 40s. We’ve seen several really hot periods out there over the years. In the 90s there were huge fires around episkopi, my brother in law out with fire beaters putting them out. I remember looking at a “hi-lo” thermometer in the shade on the patio in Akrotiri reading 45c. We tend to shop in Lidl for some things but Papantoniou (sp?) for most ….oh and of course take 3 days trying to get out of the maze they call Jumbo in Kings Avenue (I’m sure there have been people lost in there for weeks lol)

my only reservation would be cyprus is also an island and you may feel trapped if things dont pan out? maybe better on european mainland at least you can hop in a car or camper and travel a bit more if things didnt work out? just my logical thinking.ive been to cyprus by the way and loved it but that was mid 90s
@PathToPaphos2 ай бұрын
True, but I’m used to islands with really bad opportunities as I lived on Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides for two years. Plus from Cyprus I can jump onto a plane easily and reach so many countries in no time at all and inexpensively to travel, much easier than doing so from the UK. Cyprus is still great but much more developed than in the mid 90s

What timeline you thinking?. Will you be selling your UK house entirely?. Renting or buying in Cyprus?. Maybe you will discuss in future videos. Just subscribed. Good luck.
@PathToPaphos2 ай бұрын
I will be in future videos, yes. In a nutshell, I’m looking to go over on my own in Feb 25 to find a house to rent, get a car, a PA system for my entertainment and thus look for singing work. We are renting my UK home to my son as so renting over there. My wife is hoping to make the step in late 25 after work and home requirements are tied up but she’ll be coming over regularly for 10 day periods at a time. We really don’t want to buy property as we are just too old for the hassle

It seems that long term tax payers of our generation are getting out if they can. I agree with every word you say, when I retire next year I'd love to do the same but will not have the financial means to move to a different country. I moved to an over 60's social housing estate fouyr years ago when I was 61. At that time everyone here was over 60, decent, respectful. Over the past two years the council have adopted a policy of housing "vulnerable" people here. I am now surrounded by drug addicts, thieves and alcoholics and people with severe mental health issues, most of them in their 20's and 30's. I'm forced to wonder, when talking to my older peers here, who are the vulnerable ones?
@PathToPaphos27 күн бұрын
My heart really goes out to people in your position. Were it not for me having a dual citizenship where one is an EU country we would not be able to make the move either so we are super lucky. Your situation reminds me of the late 1960s. My grandparents lived in a lovely quiet street of council rented houses in the easy of Newcastle, a place called Walker. Mainly older people who moved there in the early 1930s. The council had a “great idea” to move the “problem families” from the west end of Newcastle to streets in the east with the belief that “the good people will encourage the bad to up their game and become better members of society”. Of course all that happened is it was easy pickings to not only bring their criminal and antisocial ways with them but to increase them on neighbours who had no experience of it previously not the defences. Within a couple of years the street I used to play in was a crime ridden dump, the good families were desperate to relocate and the street was now dangerous. And that’s before drugs and illegal immigration by the hundreds of thousands was a big thing. Thanks for the comment. Best wishes, Brian

Limassol is so huge compared to when we used to go in the mid/late 90s. I cannot find my way around. Having said that some of the development along the seafront is very smart and clean. There has been a fortune invested there. It seems to be the in place for our Russian residents.

If it hadn’t been for my grandmother being born in Ireland (and living there exactly 6 months) I wouldn’t have an Irish citizenship and so we would not have been wealthy enough to move either so I do sympathise. Fate can be cruel. My gran was one of 7 siblings, she was the middle one. The older ones were also born in Ireland her younger three born in Woolwich. So the children of my mums cousins from the younger three siblings don’t qualify for the citizenship yet me and my sister do. Pure fate.

My plan is to move to Almeria. Bought a house there. Now saving for land. Applying for my Irish passport. Want to use the property as a b and b. Then in 3 years, my nhs pension kicks in. No mortgage; very low council tax; cheaper fuel and vehicle running costs; can use solar panels to cut down electric bill; low heating costs; ability to grow your own fruit and veg; cheaper food and alcohol; lovely people. You can definitely live cheaper in southern europe. Ok Spain is not perfect, but where is? However alot better than the UK. Yes for 3 years, you have to get private health insurance, but fortunately I have no health issues. After 3 years, i can apply for citizenship and then, if needed, use the public health sysyem.

You’ve hit the nail on the head there, it’s not perfect but where i? You are obviously going into your move from a well researched, well thought out place which is my way too. I think it’s why I’m so comfortable about the move to another country. I have been looking at all the bad things too and working out if they are a) worse than the equivalent in the UK and b) something I am unwilling to live with. All the things you point out about costs etc are true and valid. Great message and very supportive, thank you. I don’t know how far your Irish passport journey you are but I have a couple of videos on my citizenship journey on my other channel @Thatmicro43guy there’s a link on the end cards to this video. By spending a lot of time there over the past 30 years and by spending a lot of time not doing the tourist trail activities. It has its problems in the same way as the UK, the immigration is similar to the UK in the illlegal and semi legal migration, a by product of them entering the EU is becoming an issue for instance. But I’m also seeing how the UK is declining and the gap is widening. Plus I’d rather be depressed in the sunshine and warm than the rain and cold

What is best part of Cyprus to settle financially. Greek side, or Turkish side. As you were Officer in the Air Training Corps, can you shop on the Sovereign U.K. bases ?

Almost certainly the Greek side. The only country which recognises the TRNC (north Cyprus) is Turkey so there is no international trade. Thank you for the kind words and yes, of course you are allowed to take issue and have alternate views. I will challenge the “long holiday” viewpoint though and the benefits given though. I’m totally committed to seeing my days out away from the UK. Indeed I challenge the terms of being British, in my mind I’ve never been British, I’m English and now officially Irish too. For me I’ve felt that the political and cultural society in the UK has put barriers up all the way through my life from high taxation, restrictive bureaucracy etc and that I’m now able to break away “despite” the efforts of Britain rather than “because” of the efforts of Britain. I often feel that for most of my life I was sold a lie. However, my thoughts and views do not mean that everyone has to agree with me. Very best wishes

Yes, the health is an important thing for us both but it appears far better than the UK at the moment. My wife is an A&E Ambulance medic and former nurse she’s been totally pro NHS all her life but even she says it’s broken. I am keeping my UK house but renting it out to my son (he currently lives at home) and we are renting over there. It would only really become a bolthole should the civil war start up again (unlikely) or the troubles in Lebanon/Palestien/Gaza/Israel spill over onto Cyprus, again unlikely

The amount of videos I've seen like this, where they criticise the NHS just before emigrating abroad and then get seriously ill and fly back to use the NHS and saying how wonderful the NHS is to them is a hell of a lot... I've just seen another one where a dude has a right pop at the NHS, gets very ill in Thailand just after moving there and even though he had good insurance, the posh Thai hospitals were giving a misdiagnosis and he was going downhill so he was flown back to the UK and the NHS, diagnosed him properly within 24hrs, operated on his brain very quickly after and he completely changed within a week to be more like his old self and then was put on radiotherapy and now has his freedom again after being left paralysed and helpless in Thailand... I've seen this so many times... People need to be careful not to get on the bandwagon of having a go at the NHS because from my experience, they are amazing and you never know when you might need them, even after just emigrating!

@@juliawigger9796 My life has been saved by the NHS twice, my wife once, I've had multiple successful operations and they've saved my wife's foot... I had free eyecare, medication and dentistry when I used to be poor... My mother has had her life saved more times than I can remember, including with multiple cancers, has had multiple operations, including some very complicated rare ones, gets free travel to the hospital each week where she's picked up from her door, recieves continual medication and support free that must go into the hundreds of thousands of pounds each year and is kept mentally stable by a fantastic team... They've also successfully operated on my children a few times without any issues either!... We all have a story to tell and in reality, there's a middle ground away from all the NHS bashing that's trendy these days... I'm not wishing ill on anyone but like I said, I've seen so many of these types of videos where they moan about the NHS when they're about to leave the UK and praise another country's health service without really experiencing it and then get ill shorty after emigrating but have to come back to the UK to use the NHS to sort them out properly and then cry like a baby that they were wrong about the NHS... I've seen that happen so many times with KZbinrs now.
