This is one of the best Runescape retrospectives that I have ever seen. Great job on the video. I've been playing this game fairly consistently since 2001 and I still have so many things to do on both my RS3 and OSRS account even though they are both maxed. It really does have something special about it that no other mmo can manage to capture. GW2 was probably the closest for me, but no other MMO has the hold on me that Runescape does.

Going off of the 29:00 minute mark, it's something I really appreciate of runescape is that, unlike most other games - not just MMOs but games in general, I can put it down and come back years later and remember *exactly* what I need to do. The simplicity on the surface makes the game a lot like riding a bike. It feels like a project I can lovely chip away at over the course of time. Which works really well for my brand of adhd, where I burn out easily but also often come back to the same thing.
@texxter485827 күн бұрын
this is why i always felt (and still feel) nostalgic about this game, even though i never played it when i was young. i used to watch my best friend play it, and when i wanted to give it a crack 10 years later it sparked a childish yet amusing joy out of both of us, as the very things he did back then was what i was doing now. time passed, we grew up, but what we did back then came alive again, and those children came back with it too.

13:48 huge OSRS fan here, I’ve been playing basically since they rebooted in 2013. I think the art and old school nature are simultaneously beloved and taken for granted by the community. There’s uproar whenever new areas/NPCs/gear are created that don’t “feel oldschool”, but we as a player base often don’t realize how good we’ve got it. Our dev team is incredibly receptive to feedback, and the art is often a sticking point for the community, but the devs have gotten into a good state where they car flex their creative chops while still keeping the oldschool feel. I’m only this far into the video but just wanted to say I’ve loved the style so far, it’s basically the love letter I would want to write to this game, which is incredibly cool because you’ve only played it for a relatively short amount of time. Love the video, hope it blows up for ya ❤
@TheoryWiseOSАй бұрын
First of all, thanks a ton for the support, it means the world to me. Second, I agree with you. I think it's strange how OSRS simultaneously has the most recognizable and arguably unique artstyle of any MMO, while still not being recognized for that.

It’s truly heartwarming to see someone articulate so beautifully why Old School RuneScape is such a special game. For so many of us who’ve been playing since childhood, this video captures the magic and nostalgia in a way that’s hard to put into words. I’ve always struggled to explain to others why I’m so passionate about this game, but your video feels like it speaks directly to the hearts of OSRS enthusiasts everywhere. It’s a gem of a contribution to this community, and I can’t thank you enough for sharing it. Keep up the amazing work!

This is a beautiful video. I don't think any of this could have been said any better, much less any more delicately than you put it. Seriously, great writing! OSRS is such a special game, and for those that find their place inside of it, it's impossible to replace. I've been playing for many years, I have eight different skills levelled to 99, and I've just started dipping my toes into bossing. I intend to get my first ever Fire Cape once this Leagues season ends, and I couldn't be more excited. To hear that your experience in one year on a group iron man ended in achieving a quest cape in only a years time is mind boggling to a player like me, but it really does speak to the fact that your own pace is your own pace no matter which way you slice it. I think that, and the fact that the game's systems and items all matter in permanence, really speak to the never ending appeal that OSRS has. I can achieve eight level 99 skills in about six years of playing on and off on a regular character, and you can achieve a quest cape on an iron man in only a year, because we played the game only at the pace we decided to. This is such an important video. There are subjects mentioned here that I wouldn't have even thought about that show clearly the difference in the way OSRS operates versus the everyday "theme park MMOs" that make me happy I stumbled across this video. Like I said at the start, none of this could have been explained better or more delicately than the ways you put it here. I'm glad you enjoyed our silly little mess of a game. 😇

Audibly chuckled out loud when you relayed the story of your GIM mate asking how to unlock more bag space. Inventory management is one of the many little “mini games” RuneScape asks you to solve over and over again (learning the language of the world).
@TheoryWiseOSАй бұрын
Asking your players to consider the little things like this, rather than expediting every single process is what makes the game so memorable -- You wake up thinking about it because it asks you to think about it.

Inthralled by the new quests, areas and skilling activities, i have loved every minute of it. I was able to bring some friends along on the journey, some who never played as a kid. I was such a pleasure seeing them fall in love with this world and all it offers. Thank you! I'm glad you appreciate my script, I put a lot of effort into it. I'm still learning how to mix my audio, so I'm glad my efforts weren't to waste since I was pulling my hair out in Premier to try and sounds decent. When it comes to my use of "passion project," I more so am referring to the developers tasked to work on it who pushed to add new, innovative content to help grow the game, because without them, it would've kept stagnating as we saw in early 2014 with the player numbers dipping below 20,000 concurrent. But I agree! OSRS was born from demand of players unhappy with the state of Runescape as it were.

As an OSRS vet playing classic for the first time last year I think that both games have a lot of good things to offer, however what made me stop playing is the lack of options in end game. Leveling to 60 was magical and I was constantly looking forward to unlocking new abilities and dungeons, however at end game what is there to do if you're done with professions and don't enjoy raiding? In OSRS you can max, do raids solo or in groups, do low or high intensity activities, do combat tasks and much more. I really wish there was more things to do in WoW, because I still get the itch for the combat of the game, however that is often short lived as I have no interest in the hassle of getting into raid groups or organising them.
@Jacob-se1huАй бұрын
I can't stick with other MMOs because old content just gets cycled out and forgotten, I love that decades old content is still being completed, especially with end game players sometimes roping in new players for things like tanking KBD for them, giving them the drops since they're just chasing the pet or a combat achievement.

33:23 I still think back fondly to the time I realized I could get to edgeville by using the minigame teleport to Soul Wars and walking through the portal. The game is absolutely littered with these small chunks of game knowledge that truly do assist you in even navigating the world itself. Like purposely getting thrown in jail to shortcut to Port Sarim. There's something so brilliant in evolving the methods in which you move through the world over the course of months. Optimized transportation methods for farm runs, to shooting star locations, questing, bossing runs, whatever. I'm so glad you touched on it in this video because I think it really goes underappreciated.

Great video, and I appreciate the emphasis on what I feel is OSRS's greatest asset: you can leave it at any time and come back at any time, and everything you did back then is still relevant and useful to you, and you can pick up right where you left off, with no need to skip anything released since and no pressure to get to the newest content. It is a game that truly allows you to go at your own pace, which can't be said of any of its competitors. If you ask any longtime World of Warcraft player what their least favorite thing about the game is, or why they quit, they will invariably answer "I didn't like my progress being reset every six months." OSRS never resets your progress. And I understand why WoW does it - the entire game runs on FOMO. If you don't do the new content now, when it's relevant, you may never get to do it as it was intended, you may only ever get to do it years later when it has been powercrept to the point that it is hardly content at all and the only reason to do it is to add to your ever-growing list of cosmetic overrides, and is otherwise a complete waste of time. I wish we had more games like OSRS. But we do have OSRS at least, and I am very glad for that.

"Citizens of the world" is so accurate for MMO design. Way too many MMOs now have simply elected to bypass the in-game journey through spending to advance yourself, or alternatively just decided to trivialize their game for the sake of accessibility to less-skilled or less-committed players. In the case of the former, it's simply greed-driven, but the latter fundamentally misunderstands what MMOs are about. The fun of them is knowing for much of your journey that there are better players doing more difficult things than you, and aspiring to one day do those things yourself. Blizzard would see those aspiration and spit on them, nerf whatever it is you can't currently do, then question why you're uninterested in spamming Delves or Mythic +.

So glad you mentioned inventory management. It really is low key one of the best parts of OSRS almost that no-one talks about. It's like old CRPGs. And there too you find constant upgrades throughout the game that save inventory slots, clicks etc. Barbarian skills save the need for tools and tool management, rune pouch allows you to carry all your teleports in one slot, upgrading your house lets you put more teleports there, including stuff like jewelry teleports so a rune pouch or tele to house tab is immediately a "teleport anywhere", void can make switches easier etc. etc.

No my friend, you are spending over a year addicted to OSRS "never quit, only long breaks"
@TheoryWiseOSАй бұрын
I don't doubt it!

I thought I quit once… then I logged in after a year and completed about 40 quests and got my quest cape 😂😂

It was a tough choice of which songs to use, I wanted to try use both old, nostalgic pieces and newer ones as well.

I'll be completely honest: this is, by far, the single best OSRS video I have ever consumed in my meek twenty-five years of existence. As someone who has been equally invested in WoW, OSRS, the MMORPG genre, and gaming in general throughout my life, your analysis resonated with my soul on such a profound level of shared experience. Thank you.

Good video but sometimes it's a bit of a word salad.. "Naivety is a word artistically synonymous with enthrallment and a lack of cynicism" Dude what...

Bro THANK YOU. I thought I was taking crazy pills. The script of the video gives off such "look, I'm so smart, I've read the thesaurus" vibes. Simple idea that he could relayed in a sentence or two stretch into novels. And everybody is praising the script of the video. I guess this is what gamers think smart people sound like lmao

Yup I agree. It is totally cringe and it distracts from the message he wants to convey. True intelligence often shows in clarity and simplicity. Using complicated words unnecessarily can confuse rather than impress. The goal should always be effective communication.

I don’t usually comment on videos, but this is truly wonderful to watch. I have played RuneScape for 20 years and I’m always so happy to see someone pick the game up and find the ineffable happiness I do in it. Usually ineffable, but you put so much in to words that I never could. Thank you.

The best thing about Runescape is the incredible amount of quality content creators. Nobody, aside from titans like Minecraft, can match the originality, quality, and sheer quantity of amazing series. Thank you for adding to the community. ❤

I find it a genuine travesty that the average person would require a dictionary on hand to parse the majority of the vocabulary used in this video. It is incredibly written and the thoughts you convey are so rich and precisely articulated. I've never heard another analysis like it. Take my subscription

Thank you for your kind words. I try to balance my scripts with prose and approachable analysis, so I'm glad I have people like you on my channel who appreciate that!

I would imagine anyone who put forth effort in their elementary education could understand the majority of the vocabulary in this video
@TheoryWiseOSАй бұрын
@@silverfin198 I'd hope so! My goal isn't to be dense or difficult to understand, but to use language as a tool to paint and emotionally evocative image of what i'm talking about. Art is about feeling, so I'd be remiss to not discuss it with feeeling.
