@@HamOSRS Mostly pretty happy with the video, though some minor inaccuracies came with this, like the path to the non-existent al-kharid gate present on your depicted "19 January 2001" map. (it should not be there until June). There is a tradeoff between "comprehensive" and "based on known fact", which is why we don't generally choose to photoshop intermediate maps for use on wiki. Modern maps based on cache data are marked as such and don't speculate on locations of trees etc. For the narrative of the video, the creation of visuals probably makes sense & didn't hurt much. Fun Fact: You'll notice that even on Jagex's official contemporary maps, they used manual paint tools to fudge some areas, most obviously around the Underground Pass. :-)
@HamOSRS4 күн бұрын
@@HamburgerExplosion Yeah the official maps on the Wiki were obviously my starting point and the intermediary maps never really existed. It's more of a visual representation of each update for the sake of the video. Definitely not Wiki quality. I think the Wiki has the wrong date on the mining guild and the impassable mountain terrain, but otherwise everything else in RSC seemed accurate enough to me.
@HamburgerExplosion3 күн бұрын
@@HamOSRS The 13 August 2001 release date is correct. Maps22 associated with mudclient72 from 26 July 2001 was saved by the Wayback Machine and does not include the Mining Guild. The bank was actually released a few weeks into the game (Jan 23/24, see Newsletter 1 or the update that added cut diamonds), so before that everyone would have carried their GP stack on them. It's also worth noting that the entire map was PVP on release (for players who opted in), protected only by guards in Varrock, so the stakes were a lot higher.

Really loved this video. RuneScape's always been my favorite game. Dumb question, though. What's the music transition you use? It sound so familiar...
@HamOSRS8 күн бұрын
Thank you! Not sure the name of the track but it's the jingle that plays while unlocking a new tower / map piece in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

great vid - may i ask what the music jingle you use in the transitions is? when you show the map and the date?
@HamOSRS19 күн бұрын
@@MrMosstin I don't know the exact same but it's the jingle that plays when you unlock a new tower & piece of the map in the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

I got to play runescape on a field trip at school. I played for about a year then moved and didn't get internet until 4 years later. The only thing I had all that time was a physical Runescape players guide. I looked at that map so much just longing to play
@HamOSRS2 күн бұрын
I feel that. Reminds me of the years I was stuck in F2P just spam clicking the Taverly Gate hoping that each click would be the one that took me into the promised land, but to no avail.

While I like playing OSRS as it is now, it must have been a completely different and more chill experience back then, when everyone was basically a handicapped UIM. Anyways, nice video, always found the old times of RS interesting, like lore of the old times haha
@HamOSRS20 күн бұрын
I think Open RSC has a 2001scape server where you can experience what it was like back then except the server is mostly a ghost town of its own. Glad you enjoyed the video. Stay tuned for part 2 coming next.

Runescape seemed so much nicer back then, it seemed more about group play than what it feels like now which is a singleplayer game disguised as an MMO.

Wonder what the original plans for purchasable houses was. Maybe there would be a ladder and it would just stack infinitely? Crazy
@HamOSRS15 күн бұрын
@@Jclarkis I think most of us would have only been able to afford one of the small apartments, which may have gone up an infinite number of floors. The houses were probably independent and free standing. And only the elites would have had multiple floors.
@HamburgerExplosion4 күн бұрын
You can read more on RSC Wiki's "Player Owned Houses" page. The original implementation in Varrock was only 142 available properties (I counted) which I estimated might possibly accommodate 350 players maximum. Because these were mapped out prior to RuneScape's release, there was no context for the young Gowers that their game was about to become extremely Massively Online. The Sabre clan followed from Castle Games Domain, but I don't think he planned for much more than that.
