I remember the time that I rebuilt my 400EX and I did a high compression big bore ported, stage two hot cam, kibble white +1mm valves and springs etc etc... Took it for the test drive after building it for weeks and weeks little by little, and it kept dying and it sounded like it was pre-detonating, so I thought that’s what it was (it would always fire right back up) so got home poured race fuel into it thinking that was the issue just needed higher octane due to the 13:1 Compression..... it still did it and then I remember looking on my bench there was this little metal gear, didn’t think much of it. Something told me to pull the oil cooler line and crank it and make sure oil is pumping... so i did that and no oil came out, then it dawned on me that I forgot to install the oil pump drive gear! Happy ending though because all I had to do was just replace the cylinder and piston. now get this is a totally true story here... So when I originally bought the first piston from Weisco Pistons they so happened to accidentally ship me two! When I originally Contacted them and they said they May have shipped a 2nd one out by accident but there might of been a mistake and they told me to just keep the other piston. In the end it worked out perfect though!

when you have oil out for a while its good to put a tag on the bars with "No oil" on the throttle. That way anybody that attempts to start it can see the tag.
@ykruH

Every time I take out the oil or air filter for some days, I put a sticker in the throttle grip as a reminder. "No Oil"/ "No Filter". Sometimes we may have a busy week and one can forget things, no good to run the engine with no oil or no filter ;-D

Hey Cameron, A little trick to change the timing chain without taking the engine apart. Break the old chain while its in the case. Break the New chain. Hook them together temporarily. Pull the new chain through using the old one. Once the New chain is in place take the old chain off and hook the new one back together. It is a bit tricky at first but once its done once it is much easier that screwing with splitting the case and tearing into other stuff. Loved the video, always super descriptive and well put together!

Man, that is so much more complicated than my 33 year old Honda. I have a couple caps for timing marks instead of taking the whole cover off, don't have to split cases for new timing chain (which I had to replace 😂), and the cam gear had a cover over it for easy access. All in all, an amazing video on a beautiful bike, and a lesson to yourself and viewers on what not to forget!

I was hoping for a yoshi or poweroll cam. (not even sure if those companies are still around). Great video reminds me of my past life as a Honda bike mechanic in the 70s. Hey you may want to explain why the end gap is important. I use needle nose on the wrist pin clips. Put it on one edge, seat the other edge and gently roll them into place by rotating them toward the gap. You pay so much attention to detail it is incredible. Any person who gets you as there mechanic is darn lucky. Thanks for the memories. Larry

And for the valve retainer clips, i like to put a blob of grease on the valve stem, so when i put the clips in place, they dont move around when releasing the pressure of the tool. So you dont have to fiddle with a screwdriver etc whilst holding the spring compression tool.

cameron niemela.... when checking valve seals you shouldnt use water as it has a high surface tension and it would require a larger break in the seal for water to show its face..... next time use alcohol or fuel as its very low tension and will show leaks way better. another thing, when youre done lapping valves you should sharpie mark the sealing surface and gently rub the valve against the seat and see if it wears the ink off evenly.....your lapping compound can look like it hit all surfaces but doesnt mean the valve and seat are genuinely mated together. keep up the great work and love your channel... also congrats on landing a great woman!!!
