Pulled into the petrol station, 5 minutes later left with a 400+ mile range and straight on my way, so simple. EV - NEVER.

What a farce. My £650 car did 1,426 miles in 4 1/2 days last week; it required 3 visits to a petrol station, taking about 5 minutes each time. If you've got 200 miles to do, you don't want to spend an hour or more sightseeing the inside of a Tesco store while your car acquires 30 more miles of range: That's a situation that defines "not fit for purpose".
@zeejimi4044 Жыл бұрын
Yep - under the present circumstances, EVs are really not fit for purpose. High cost of the EV itself, low range, high depreciation, sparse charging network, high cost of charging externally, questionable longevity of the battery.. all these factors make EVs completely uninteresting for private ownership. EVs are mostly leased by companies, rather than being bought by private persons. Companies can write off the costs much better than a private person can, and they obviously don’t need to care about the longevity of the car/battery when the leasing contract lasts only 3 or 4 years..🚗⚡️👎

It takes around 5 minutes to charge up with diesel and I dont spend my life savings on snacks in service stations or the like as I just keep on trucking. No range anxiety either. WEll the car is fantastic, great range about 300 on a tank costs about 66 quid, and I always carry 5 0r 10l in cans for work anyway. I bought an EV three months ago and it has truly been a nightmare. There is not enough information about the truth of owning an EV, such as the necessity of owning your own home so you can install a Level 2 charger, the fear of going on any kind of trip with the uncertainty of not being sure where chargers are reliably available as well as the fast use of charge when driving. I like to use my heater, my car app. And sometimes even the massager on my seat, and all that will use battery charge. I bought a Tesla adapter for my car in case I’m in a position that the charger I need will not be available. It is never easy to just charge and go, owning an EV is NOTHING like going to a gas station and filling up.

It seems the moral of owning an ev at the present time is 1) expect to lose an hour or more of your day looking for a charger and charging it up. If I had a ton of money I would definetly have a tesla with the full home charging kit and home battery system and just do return runs within the range of the vehicle, but I don't and that is the economic position of the masses. The running of an EV is a problem that will only get worse as more people buy them. However I think the main problem is that very few people will be able to afford one and the worry of battery replacement price will put off the second hand buyers. So in my opinion EV cars are a way of getting the poorer motorists off the roads making for a better driving experience for the more well off car owners. You don’t hear anything about Bio diesel anymore because they can’t tax used vegetable oil.

I do enjoy your videos for the entertainment factor. I’m EV agnostic and I still run a “dirty diesel” so have no particular axe to grind. I do think you make it difficult for yourself by not using an app like ABRP (a Better Route Planner). I used it simulate your journey from Ipswich to Mansfield with an initial 16% SOC. One charge for 24 mins (to 76% SOC) at Shell Recharge at Norwich Rd, Ipswich would of got you back to Mansfield with 11% (I have assumed the Tycan RWD 93KWh), in a total time of 2 hours 30 mins (traffic permitting). I do take your point about availability and reliability of chargers, so this assumes one was free and operational! You say you love your Tycan (in between saying you hate it), and in another video, wouldn’t swap it for a petrol Boxster, so if you want to enjoy all the benefits of an EV, which you have acknowledged, I’m afraid you will have put up with the quirks and inconveniences of the current state of the infrastructure. Do yourself a favour and plan a little - it will save you a lot of unnecessary stress!

I've been driving an ev for aboitv2byears as a personal car and 4 years delivering them all over the country to people that have brought/leased them. I have never had an issue charging. For my own car I charge at home about times a week (60 mile round trip to work!) Because that's all I need to do. When my partner and I go on holiday in the UK we go in my EV rather than her mini and even on 5hr trips to Cornwall (we live 30 miles north of London) I've never had a problem, I plan any long trips which takes 5 mins and always make sure I have a back up charger to stop at if the first one is broken. The stops are alway welcome anyway for a toilet break and a coffee so it really isn't a big deal. Also when we get where we are staying 99% of the time if its a hotel they will have chargers available or will let u plug in the granny (very slow) charger so I genuinely believ e that most videos like this are exaggerated to make EVs look bad. Yes I agree if you can't charge at home then I certainly wouldn't have one, but if u can they really are a no brained... its saved me around £100+ a week on fuel and that's not to be sniffed at plus my insurance went down by severl hundred pounds not to mention no road tax... why wouldn't I have one in that situation?

I am a mechanic. An industrial mechanic. I work on electric machines all day long. I have worked on golf carts, and many of the electric fork lifts and lifts of different kinds, they are all the same concept. In an enclosed area you can't run propane or diesel machines without the exact proper ventilation, so many of the heavy lifting machine are electric. They are basically huge batteries with a motor and an hydraulic pump. Logistically, the same as an EV. I had listened to all of the hype about EV's in the past, about how the "major car companies killed" the EV. They don't kill it, it was a suicide. The concept has been around for well over 100 years. Tesla, (the REAL Tesla the actual genius) invented the induction motor in 1887, so the tech was around and it was the first form of engine that was considered for what eventually became cars. The limitations are the same today as they were then, batteries stink! They are getting better, but hey are still limited. How do you get them to last longer? You make them bigger. Sorry, that's the answer. And yeah, sodium, blah blah blah, rust, blah blah blah, they are all limited and very expensive! They are limited in what they can and cannot do. The are limited by temperature. They are limited by size and weight. They are big, and the power does not last long. EV's are not the solution to a problem. They are an entirely new, bunch of problems. Best of luck to all of you out there that just can't stand the truth, because it will cost you!

@@greggthunderburg7294 that was a toy sized proof of concept. However by 1880 workable horseless carriages and cabs were there...and more common than steam or ICE..... Yes, the big problem that no one seems to talk about is the taxation issue. In the US, I calculated that if the electric user paid an equivalent tax rate to the gasoline user, he would have to pay at least 50% more for electricity. That's not the end of the world, but it has to be considered. The lack of charging locations isn't the problem that most think it is, because in the 30 years it will likely take to replace the carpark, all these charging locations and the infrastructure will adapt. I've heard the comment that charging sites will be as common as gas stations. That is totally unrealistic. My crude calculations indicate that there would have to be 50 times as many charging locations as there are now gas pumps. Reason? It takes 5 minutes to refuel, but maybe 5 hours to get a charge. And what are all those people going to do while the car is being charged. I'm overstating the problem, because most people will charge at home, but you get the idea.

Most folk in UK don't have off road parking. Where I live 65% of housing have no access to park all their vehicles in front of their front door let alone off the road, most have at least 3 cars per house. This is all down to a failed public transport system. No buses or not enough, trains that are so expensive & overcrowded its cheaper & more comfortable to use a car & always on strike. In the town where I used to live there are many high rise flats - 30/40 per block, car parks too small to accommodate all the cars so park in nearby streets. Lekkie cars were tried over 100yrs ago & failed for the same reasons, ability to charge easily & range.

Charging stations will become high crime areas. EV owners will be rich targets for robbery and worse.
@gertsy20002 жыл бұрын
Your crude calculations make sense but It doesn't take 5 hours to charge on fast chargers. Most modern EVs will charge from 15% to 75% in 15-20 mins (On fast charge). 20% to 75% is the optimum charge level to maintain your batteries at. The last 25% of charge takes as long again as the 75% you do that overnight at home, in Australia we can at least.
@nickb53912 жыл бұрын
That is a point, when you said about charging at home, what if you have a family that all has EV cars & they all need charging for the next day, would you have to set your alarm to get up & swap the vehicles around thoughout the night or is a like an multi socket extension lead so you can plug in more than one vehicle at home

We should try to keep in mind that electric cars are in their infancy as far as the battery technology is concerned. The batteries will need to take a quantum leap forward as far as energy density is concerned AND become a lot cheaper if they are to be the future of personal transport. I am a former - unhappy - EV-owner (BMW i3), and I am now a deliriously happy diesel-driver (BMW 216d). Apart from experiencing similar problems as shown in the video about finding and being allowed to use a charging station (if it is not already occupied), the worst nightmare was the range anxiety. Despite driving at only 100 km/h instead of the allowed 130 km/h in Austria on the motorway, the range was only 90 km in the summer (with the AC or lights switched off). Once you have experienced such range anxiety on a cold, dark and rainy night, and spending two long waits while charging the battery in the hope of getting home, then you REALLY appreciate being able to drive, fully relaxed, at 130 km/h with a BMW 216d with a range of up to 1400 km..🚗💨👍

I suffer from anxiety, no way I'm getting an EV at the moment. I remember one year being stuck behind a pile up on the motorway during snowy ice weather it was freezing. You'd think the parking time limits wouldn't apply to EV's needing to charge, also the chargers would be on sat nav to easily find the bloody things. Charging it up was "cheap" but the associated drink and food and your free time, made it quite costly, glad you made it home!

This is ridiculous. If you rely on a car and you travel all over the country then EV's are a waste of time . If you can charge at home and drive locally then maybe it OK although the prices of these vehicles is prohibitive. I am sure in five years the battery technology will improve along with the infrastructure and today EV's will be worthless dinosaurs. Until then i will drive an ICE vehicle.
