I love watching these videos. It's interesting the different ways they notch the tree. Most of the cutters I know cut the bottom of the notch first and then cut top slant second because it's easier to line up the direction the tree is going to go. The important thing is to drop the tree where you want it.

Forester chain. Felled upwards of 50 Black Locust trees, cut all into 16 in. firewood, branched every one, and had it in the dirt probably 25 to 30 times. It STILL HAS NOT NEEDED A FILE ON IT. If you think I'm making this up, or don't know what the heck I'm doing, let me tell ya. I've been felling for about 30 years and hand filing the chains just as long. Either this particular 16in. full chisel is an anomaly, or Forester chains are superior to anything I've ever used. Go figure.

When you first measured the amount of material in each chain, my initial thought was the quality of the metal is more important. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I have used Forester bars & chains at times. They aren't terrible, but they also aren't anything special. I feel the Holzfforma bars & chains are even better than Forester.

IME full-chisel 20-24" chain on 50-60 cc saws cutting clean wood quickly goes dull right about the end of a second tankful, needing a quick guided touch of the file. The wee apex where a cutter enters the wood just can't handle more cutting. Happens with many brands. OTOH in that regard, semi-chisel is like the "Energizer bunny", just keeps on going. For ME to take a break, every second fillup, I use Granberg guide for a couple of file strokes/cutter, full-size 3/8" or LP. Works fine, could conceivably extend fuel endurance too by making the cut easier. Certainly can't hurt. Nice hickory there, Pete, an all-time favorite here. (With a 576 Husqy chain wouldn't dare act dull- too much power for that. You could run it backwards ALMOST.)

That chain would be quite irritating having it buck every time the tip touches something.

I tried the Oregon power cut and a bore cut was almost impossible. It was very hard on a file as well. As you said probably a good firewood saw but not a felling chain. Thank you for your review .

I don't know if it was the camera angle, but that "forked trunk" tree at the 4:00 mark sure surprised me in the direction it fell and the cut that you made. It sure looked as if you cut the notch on the opposite side of the lean. Am I wrong? Very impressive either way!

Use the next file size down from what you use that matches the factory edge when you file it

You seemed to find the same issues I did with the the Forester chain. The price is nice and I went so far as to buy the 10 pack right out of the gate. I found that the 10 chains didn't last as long as 2 good chains, so not a great value. I cut mainly firewood and still think that the better chain manufactures chain is the better go.

I have not tried all the brands in the test but did unfortunately purchase 4 loops of the Forestor chain 2 years ago,and watching you cut was like a bad flashback!🙄 The only good thing about it is the price. I was mostly cutting dry dead Ash at the time and could never get it to smooth up. Just like your experience with the bucking bull when bore cutting which would make ya think your aggressive on rakers. Yet when you buck...it doesnt pull hard and actually cuts slow. If you hit metal and bend a few of those soft teeth. It will wear you out trying to cut with it. My best experience was actually with the last 1/4 of the tooth. I will never buy any more chains, bars, or anything with Forester on the box! Look forward to your opinions on the others!👍

Pete, is it OKAY “most of the time” for people to come in and get the leftovers that are on the ground for folks to use for their own personal firewood? I’m just asking rather than assuming because you know what assuming makes out of both of us.
