Great video, I love how Mortarion is a recurring villain to beat and I believe there is a combo to completely destroy him, a 10 man terminator assault squad with thunder hammers led by a captain in the righteous crusaders detatchment with the sigismund’s seal for 5+ to crit on hits in the vow accept any challenge which also grants sustained hits 1, then use the strategem fervent acclimation to give the unit anti psyker 4+ for the dev wounds to bypass mortarion’s save completely leaving only the FNP

Two Vindicators supported by Iron Priests / Techmarines to get +1 to hit has been reliably killing Mortarion and Rogal Dorn Tanks in my games so far. Point for point though, not sure if it's worth it just for the kill potential, but for secondaries and tank shocks, they definitely are.

@ If you wanna add everything then naturally we should add oath of moment which would mostly cancel out the bad aim, speaking from personal experience using thunder hammers like this and i have found they will quite often convert to more hits than attacks, tho to statistically get enough damage to kill mortarion with the -1 damage it would have to be 48 hits which is simply unlikely so he would probably survive if he pops disgustingly resilient

Awesome. The real value of possessed in pactbound is marking them undivided and using the reroll wound rolls stratagem on them. You get to reroll 1’s to hit if you pass, and then can fish for devastating wounds, which is pretty necessary to kill custodes against the army-wide 4+ invulnerable saves. I did a chaos vs custodes crusade, and they almost always traded up with the devastating, even being pretty effective against allarus terminators. They do die pretty immediately after, though.

Awesome videos! Personally, i would absolutely LOVE if you ran the math on Black Templars Sword Brethren. They can take the Castellan for Lethal Hits, Helbrecht for +1 Strength & Critical Hits on 5+, or both! They also have their ability to give the unit either +1 Attack or +1 Damage. It'd be very interesting to see exactly how much damage you could output with them, and they have buff options with stratagems, templar vows & enhancements, so lots of options for raising the damage ceiling!

Just a few things from the Custodes perspective. First, almost every list will take 4 or 5 guard with draxus. But Wardens are more common (the most competitive lists will typically have 3x5 with blade champions) and get a once per game 4+++. Second, the most common subfacion, Shield Host, has a strat for 4+++ vs mortals. I would recommend running the sim against Wardens and Caladius Grav Tanks instead of Guard and Allarus to get a better idea of what would be better into Custodes. Either way, I'm digging the stuff. Where the Lightning Claws shine is against anything with damage reduction. They don’t have to worry about it at all. This makes a 10 man unit into one of the best primarch hunters in the game. Also, not worrying about Magnus as much with the 4+ FNP against psychic attacks is a huge bonus. One of the best deep striking units, and one that can beat most of the most defensive units is hard to beat point for point.

With the pactbound zealots detachment you can also fish for 6's if your unit is undivided with the profane zeal strategem. And Eye of the Gods turns the master of possession or Executions into a monster

for hammers vs. claws I feel like it's pretty important to consider the difference having the target having Oath of Moment on it is. Hammers will get \ more benefit from the hit re-rolls since they've got lower weapon skill.

One thing you might've missed out is that chosen can actually have 2 plasma pistol per 5, so which would bring their damage up a bit more, however great video guys thank you. I usually run dread talons so their raw output was a question i couldnt choose. was very helpful. Hope you guys keep the csm content coming

Great video!! Thanks for the content. For the possessed they could also be mark of undivided - RR hit rolls of 1 & spend a CP to RR wound rolls for more consistent devs once per game. Chosen could also take a master of executions for RR hits when enemy is below starting strength, RR wounds below half. Fabius bile also boosts their toughness by 1 and strength by 1, making their accursed weapons hit on 4s against custodes

Don't sleep on plague marines with the heavy vs bubotic weapons, -1 toughness, -1 sv, -1 to 2 ap strat, sustained 1 or 2 strat, lethal 5s with biologus purifier. The swing on their damage can be wild. We've got tallyman for +1 to hit or chaos lord with lightning claws to join for crit 5 goodness. A lot of options, hard to say what's optimal.

Cool video! A few things regarding chosen, as mentioned previously in the comments, they get 2 plasma pistols and 2 combi weapons per 5, so in a brick of 10 your looking at 4 plasma pistols and likely 8 combi weapon shots, with sustained hits and the potential for rerolls due to detachment/ stratagem/ character support, even if you dont over charge their plasma pistols, I dont think you can disregard their shooting, additionally, they have grenades. You also suggested you wouldnt want to dark pact for minimal shooting as you dont want to risk killing a model, remember, chosen also have an Icon, allowing them to reroll dark pacts. Speaking of characters, you touched on the chaos lord, but one of the most efficient characters to lead the chosen has to be the master of executions, as he gives full rerolls to hit if attacking an understrength unit, and rerolls to hit and wound if attacking a unit below half strength, in pack bound zealots, this is incredibly powerful as you would be getting lethals on 5+ with full rerolls. The MoE is also pretty good in combat with 5 st7 ap2 2dmg attacks with dev wounds and precision, who also generates cp if he kills character, you could even still attach a chaos lord if you wanted as the MoE allows another leader unit. Further to this, you could attach a MoE and either a chaos lord (huge buff for the lord as now has access to full reroll to hit) Fabulous Bill (quite a good choice as hugely buffs the brick with +1 S and T, and blank dmg, however due to Bills surgeon Acolyte the brick is now forced on foot) or even Abaddon!

A few interesting points that tie into your conclusions. In Renegade Raiders you can use the Ruinous Raid stratagem, which will give full hit and would re-rolls if you are fighting models on an objective, but only if you disembark from a transport. You lean toward Chosen in your conclusions, and I think access to this stratagem makes them the natural choice in Raiders, but a comparison of Chose with full hit and wound re-rolls vs. Possessed with dev wounds in Renegade Raiders might be interesting. In Pactbound you can gain a Fight on Death from the Eternal Hate stratagem, which is improved by the Mark of Khorne, or you can use Torpefying Refrain, to gain fall back and charge, or advance or fall back shoot and charge as an improvement from the Mark of Slaanesh. The Chosen already have advance or fall back shoot and charge, making this a total duplication for them. This also supports your conclusion that Mark of Slaanesh is better for Possessed, since the Chosen gain nothing from it in the form of Strategems. While Chosen fighting on death can be scary - giving them yet another reason to go Khorne over Slaanesh. All in all a cool exploration of the math behind the game play.

Another great video. Keep em coming. Could you conside doing a short piece on when to not fish for Lethal Hits if you have re-rolls to hit and you have Devestating Wounds? I think it will depend on a number of things, but especially your own AP and their armour save. But sometimes you may even want to re-roll lethal hits to get non-lethal hits so you have more chance of rolling Devestating Wounds. Should be some interesting maths I think? What say you comment Gods? ;-)

Love the video but I think you were running the “less optimal loadout” for doing strict damage testing. The strat you mentioned at the end is for units with mark of undivided that gives the unit reroll wounds and the mark itself gives reroll 1s to hit. So on the 40 devastating wound attacks from the possessed you can still dark pact for sustained on 6s reroll 1 and then reroll wounds. I think that undivided is also better for the chosen if they have a lord to get him reroll on his dev wounds. If you want to run them as khorn then you put a master of executions with them so you reroll hits and fish for the 5 up lethal and they can punch almost anything regardless of toughness (you just throw a grenade at any monster or vehicle to plink off 1 wound to activate the moe’s ability)

Got an interesting maths problem for you if you'd like one. How do you kill Lion 'el Jonson reliably? - Something that can tank his melee profile and fights first, or reliably get close enough to ignore his lone op and shoot. Or some combination of both of these things. Normally in my games I typically ignore him and play the game where he isn't. But I'm curious as to how you'd go about dealing with his profile as I've not been successful in finding a cost effective answer yet.

Great video! I run pactbound zealots and have never really had a reason to use possessed over chosen (at least since we got our codex). The stratagem you were forgetting is a nasty one called "Profane Zeal" which allows the unit to reroll all wound rolls, IF the unit is marked undivided. Possessed cant really take advantage of this as they need to be slaanesh to use the slaanesh locked advance and charge stratagem, but Chosen already having that ability AND being able to take a lord to make profance zeal free should almost always take mark of undivided. In the end the unit of chosen would be hitting on 3s, rerolling 1s (undivided bonus), rerolling all wounds (free because of lord), ap2 which is just kinda nasty considering they give all these bonuses to the Chaos Lord as well. Edit: Forgot that as chosen can advance, SHOOT, and charge they are free to do actions instead of shooting which makes them so much more versatile than possessed. Oh and chosen can ride in rhinos, while possessed have to footslog which might make them a bit squishier in the end

Still being able to take a couple shots into your target before charging helps, especially if you’re running a master of executions who needs the enemy unit to be damaged to give his hit rerolls

Hey I've got a fun math problem for you guys. Here's the premise: -angron has two auras he can choose from: reroll hits vs +1 to charge. -in order for angron to kill the unit, he must: ---roll high enough to kill his target ---roll high enough to make the charge P(unit removed)=P(kill) * P(make charge) At what charge range is it better to take +1 to charge vs reroll hits? Assume the target is like 5 marines or a land raider. Common world eater wisdom is to "always take reroll hits", but I'm not actually convinced that's true.

As an ork player I love me some terminators, because rokkits love termies, 3 wounds at str 8, with blast, can really do a good number against them. But going from 3 wounds to 4 wounds... doubles the number of hits I need to make from my deffkoptas or other rokkit boyz. If they got 3 wounds, easy killing, ideal targets. At 4 wounds, it's just such a massive increase in their survivability. So do keep in mind what armies or units are in the meta or your local game groups when figuring out if that extra wound is worth it, against some lists it does a lot more than others.

Comparing a Squad of Long Fangs (led by a librarian): -holding Lascannons vs. Missile Launchers (krak) against a hard target -holding Missile Launchers (both modes) vs. Grav-Cannons against both hard & soft targets -holding Missile Launchers (frag) vs. Heavy Bolter They have an absurd amount of options for heavy weapons, they're probably one of the best single squads of infantry when it comes to cracking open the targets they're keyed to, and they can be keyed to any type of enemy

13:30 that's so cool. I've long suspected claws with strength boofs were good. What I love even more is that the claws are significantly more likely to bracket the Hekaton, which means it's easier to argue for them for sheer offense. Really neat. I would guess into anything with strong Invul, FNP the hammers are better.

Love your videos. Would love to hear your take on the anti synergy of lethal hits and devastating wounds. I run champions of Russ a lot and sometimes I feel like everything I field that has dev wounds takes a hit whenever I complete saga of the beast slayer (gives lethal hits to all melee). I can do saga of the warrior born to give sustained hits, but does that actually make up for the loss? Would love to hear your take.

@ chosen vs possessed: remember that gw took the "all the time" dev wounds from possessed with codex. in index they had this power permanent. Master of possession is like the librarian. A kind of smite 2a s6 ap-3 d3 + melee 4a forceweapon which he both can upgrade +1 to hit and wound by dealing 1 mortal wound to his squad.

There is a Space Marine unit that can kill Mortarian in turn 1 80+% of the time. The combo is: Space Wolves Champion of Russ (SAGA OF THE WARRIOR BORN) Harald Deathwolf (Gives Dev wounds to all Teeth and Claws of unit) Wolf Guard Battle Leader On Thunderwolf (with BLACK DEATH) (Gets Dev Wound on 4+ on thunder hammer and on 4+ for teeth and claws) 6x Thunderwolf Cavalry And use GO FOR THE THROAT strat for Improve AP by 1, I think this is right, made a quick sim program but didnt test it properly. Also could have missed a few things.

Can I ask... Tau Crisis Sunforge Battlesuits? They have a truly bizarre statline where they hit on a 4+, have strength 9, but reroll all wounds against vehicles and can be buffed with For The Greater Good. People swear by them as anti-vehicle, but every time I've used them they seem to whiff. Also I'm curious if it's better to have them led by Farsight or a unit with additional Fusion Blasters

How would power fist then compare? They still have the spillover issue but hit on 3's instead of 4's, so we should expect 4-5 extra hits with a 10 man squad. ( im thinking specifically that regular terminators may actually have better melee than assault terminators)

In the end, it is always devastating wounds that matter the most. Simply to overcome this huge amount of inv saves so many factions and units have. With devastating wounds you can almost always ensure, that at least you weakened your enemy so much, that he wont be able to fight back well. And devastating wounds is very universal. It is good against everything. Like an Avatar of Khaine, Demons, Charactermodels with high inv. Tanks with high inv. I think Terminators are so expensive, if you want to use them, they must be good against everything. Maybe it sounds Op, but it is the Lore Idea behind. And you can try to balance it by figuring out a good high costs for them, without being to rediculously expensive.

Yeah… there is always a gap between the lore and the rules. I always laugh when I’m like “cool, lost half a company today, but I’m sure we will recover. :)

Awesome channel! Can you compare the shooting output of an Imperial Knight Paladin vs an Imperial Knight Errant both without carapace mounted weapons? Respectively, the Imperial Knight Crusader with a Rapid-Fire Battle Cannon vs a Thermal Cannon would be a similar comparison, since the crusader merely switches the close combat weapon for an Avenger Gatling Cannon.

These are so cool and interesting. I’d love to see how a Patriarch and a group of 10 Purestrain Genestealers from Genestealer Cult against multiple targets. The Patriarch is suppose to be a beast in the lore. If possible in your simulations could you do attacks against characters, as if the Patriarch uses the Epic Challenge stratagem, giving his claws Precision.

you make a good point. reroll hits would give hammers a 50% boost while only giving the claws a 33% boost. that would definitely swing things the other direction against the targets we talked about by about 1.5/1.33~ 12.5%.

You should do some funny statistics. For example, one Guardsman in melee with Mortarion, how many turns on average would it take for him to kill Mortarion. Also the opposite, out of 1 million simulations, in how many of them could 1 guardsman tank all of Mortarion's melee attacks.

Couple things. It's good to see how close thunder hammers and lightning claws are, however all your numbers were based on the detachment and the character. I'd like to see numbers on the regular terminators that everyone else gets to take. And how much those numbers may or may not change.. As for the chosen versus possessed, that would explain why most lists have chosen and few lists have possessed.

Not sure if you are taking more suggestions but I have been struggling to figure out how good an interceptor is 😅. Do you take em as a 3 man or a 6 ? Is the plasma better than the bolter? Who to shot at. Probably why I lose so many games.

The terminator math was cool. Could you compare just reg terminators with a power fist and missile launcher? Hitting on a 4+ now with hammer is hesitant to use now.

Possessed as mark of slanash can advance and charge for a cp which gives them a lot of mobility, throw on an excessively costly MoP and that threat range gets great.

Yeah. In LAG you have access to +1 to wound so you can double dib with the librarian but not with the chaplain…. I think he makes waaay more sense in other detachments though.

Can you run the numbers on melee centurians using righteous crusaders. I think they have great potential with our sustained hits 1 and lethal hits when paired together by using fervent acclamation

Could you please do the Heavy Intercessor vs Hellblasters. I play them in vanguard detachment and with Tor Garadon, you can do something very alike. I wonder if this is the best way to go. Lieutenant and biologus and mix up enhancement. I think you could have fun. There is so much stat if you take survivability into it. With the +1 to wound from the new Oath there is some play to have

Speaking of Blood Angels: I was shocked to see that Angelic Inheritor (with a Lead) deals more damage in melee in most cases compared to LAG (with Charge).

@@warphammer-math Well oyu have the Lethal Stratagem that gives you Character Units (not Models) also Lance. The BA Commander did a bit of Math (not comperable to your crazyness), and Lag only won in those points where +2 Strength meant +1 to Wound. I mean it makes sence, even on Dante, 1 to hit always fails, rerolling it = more hits while hitting on 2+. If lag rolls a single 1 the +1A is already gone. 1 to wound always fails, rerolling it = more wounds, the lag bonus in many targets doesn't matter here. Wounding on 3+ without or on 3+ with Lag is the same, while rerolling 1 still works. Also, lag does nothing for the Sanguinor, or if you are charged. Lag does nothing for your tanks, but with AI you can say to your Tanks: "here, have the rerolls for a turn, also Fallback shoot&charge". I mean sure, if you throw Units that are bad at killing Tanks at Tanks, Lag let's you be a little bit less worse against them.

That makes sense. The one thing is didn’t like with the detachments was all the big units I had to run. I generally use a lot of MSUs compared to other people I’ve played against. Can’t deny its potential though.

@ me too, I run 3x3 Sanguard (1x Dante, 2x Captain) instead of a big one. Death Company is completly gone. My Biggest Squad is a full Bladeguard Veteran with Chaplain, which means rerolls 1 for hit, wound and saves :) Also a full 6 Unit Inceptor Sqaud, which you can deep strike in 6" of a Tank, Reroll Hits with OoM, reroll Wounds with Twin Linked, kill it and if you are positioned that your enemy can't charge you in 1 turn, put them back into Reserve :)
