RE2 is the 1st groundbreaking in term of Protagonist route with different run RE1 2002 is the best REmake you can get with overhaul lots of gameplay, map design and enemies with crisp graphics for 2002 era. RE4 is the game that influence every other genre games with 3rd Person OTS (Over The Shoulder) camera. RE7 is the game that came back to life with more horror theme with DLC that gives you new experience and different mini games. The Scapegoat for RE series was RE Veronica because it supposed to be sequel from RE2 but get delayed because Sega Saturn cant handle the game due hardware limitation thus it moved 2 years later with the name of Veronica X. The most hated was RE Umbrella Corp and RE6 because they changed the game too much to the point where it destroyed the franchise. Despite the good sales on RE6, the hate from community was so much that it soon became black sheep of it.

13:45 Matt, I'm pretty sure the note in the RE2 N64 version that notifies Billy was dead was supposed to be Rebecca falsifying evidence to get the law off his back, remember at the end of RE Zero, they exclaim Billy is "dead" because otherwise he'd just be hunted down again for his crimes. So yes, Billy is still alive and well, he's just dead as far as the whole world besides Rebecca knows it.

they should have brought back billy by now, maybe in a more low budget type game like revelation. i honestly think they should make classic style games like re1 remake, even remake 2 and 3 in that same engine. it would be cheap to make them at this point but millions of people like myself, who hated the remakes for 2 and 3 we did get, would be all over them. they'd likely sell better than the revelation games. that could be the replacement to the revelation series, give us classic re fans the amazing remakes we never got. then if those were as successful as i suspect they would be, they could make new games in that same engine, like a new billy story that takes place a few years after re0.

I always liked how in Darkside Chronicles Leon and Claire explicitly decide against splitting up (like they actually did in the STARS office in RE2) two or three times. Considering that was Leon telling Krauser the story, I always figured it was like Leon: "And then we shot down the idea of splitting up." Krauser: "Yeah, you already mentioned you did that once. Why did you bring it up again? I mean, I figured you're not stupid enough to willingly separate from your partner in a situation like that." Leon: "Good. Just so we're clear. "

it was the forbidden game my non gamer dad had heard to keep us far away from because it was SO violent. Naturally my dad saw this as a challenge, and rented a ps1 and a copy to play with me, his at the time, 12 year old son. Awkwardly guiding him through that as the first 3d game he'd ever played over the next few days, then seeing him immediately buy a ps1 and re2 and 3, is one of my fondest memories.

Something to point out, it's not the Director's Cut of RE1 that has the shit music, it's the Dualshock version. The non-dualshock Director's Cut still had the OG's soundtrack, so if you actually want the best version of OG RE1, the non-dualshock Director's Cut version is the way to go.

YUP, it's crazy that people forget how we have OG RE1, RE Director's Cut and THEN Dual Shock. Director's Cut is actually fantastic. Resident Evil 2 had the original release with the (imo sexy) thick PS1 double case and then had the slimmer Dual Shock supported version

Something i remember about Resi 2, it was an event! And an event like we'd not seen before for a video game. It was featured in magazines that didn't care for games, our school was buzzing for the release, our local HMV had a full shop front display for a month up to the release with video which... we only saw in the big flag ship stores in London, not in our local one! Resident Evil (2002) will always be one of my favorite games of all time. It truly is the perfect remake. It cuts nothing, it adds a lot, and it's just oozing with atmosphere.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but both RE: Outbreak games are my all-time faves. Why? Because unlike any other RE, they not only give the player the experience of what it was like in Raccoon City at the VERY start of the outbreak, but actually put the survival into the survival horror. They are punishing, they have unparalleled replayability, each character has their own stats, abilities, and starting items, they are still, somehow, the only games with makeshift melee weapons (and unarmed attacks), they have short, 15min-1hr scenarios, are 3p co-op, have many hidden CGI videos, half the scenarios have entirely different stories, end bosses, and hard-to-get character-specific endings if certain requirements are met. Bets of all, you actually FEEL like you're in a zombie outbreak. You are literally an average joe/jane, except for one character that over the two games you come to find out a lot more about. Hell, they're the only games outside of 4 and 7 where you're infected...but unlike either of those, it affects the gameplay, because every bite, every scratch, it all increases your infection, so you are on a hard timer; once you reach 100%, you turn into a zombie for a bit on co-op. And every unlockable NPC or zany outfit ALSO has their own stats as well. Both games 100% came out like 5-10yrs too early, concept-wise.

Well said. Outbreak 2 had alot of fun unlockables. Both games had speed run charts built into it when it was still online. Having intentionally gimped online chat was enough to get what was needed but made it part of it's whacky charms. Each character in the Outbreak game was almost like a class or job system too which made it super fun to play different NPCs like in Outbreak 2 you could pick a wounded cop as your character and you started off in Critical Near Death at the start of the round but if you did that I think he was one of the better characters to play as. Modern day interpretation with better match making systems, the new REmake engines and perhaps some new or remade content from both games lumped together would be awesome, especially if they can update it in an on-going way. Money left on the table capcom. Outbreak 1 and 2 are my favorites.

RE4 isn't my favourite, because the original formula games are my favourite by far, the first 3 specifically, and RE4 feels like such a huge departure from them. Code Veronica and RE4, in entirely seperate ways, are what lead to RE5 and RE6 being nothing at all like the earlier Resident Evils.

As a total package it might be the best Survival Horror Game ever made (I haven't played Kuon or Clocktower 3 or the lesser known Survival Horror Games), but I'd argue the RPD section in RE2make surpasses it if only slightly. Map shows which locks are on which doors, zombies maintain damage on them and follow you through several doors, Mr X twists your understanding and safety about halfway through. It really bothers me that they figured out a perfect survival horror formula for the RPD then just completely forgot that for the rest of the game with enemies you either have to kill or can completely ignore once you get past them.

I don't ever overthink RE plots, because they don't bear scrutiny - and I am happy if they just contribute positively to the tone of the games, which I felt the Lisa plot accomplished beautifully.

yeah, both games have their problems, and i love both anyways, but the 3 remake is so blatantly unfinished, it has to be knocked down a tier, just for that. That said, I love how bitchy jill is in it, she's just spent weeks trying to warn everybody about umbrella after the mansion incident, and getting nowhere, only to watch the city burn around her, and she's such a dick about it, and she's earned it. Likewise her transition from terrified to annoyed by nemesis matches the player experience so well, I love how confident, almost arrogant she gets fighting him near the end of the game.

I don’t know I’d put RE3make up so high personally. It’s well made and fun, but it feels too short. Once I know a RE game well I finish it around the 5 hour mark on replays, but RE3make took me under 5 hours on an initial playthrough.

​@@zeroskaterz92 no, the orinal does have more areas, you have the initial racoon city segment, the rpd, the park, the clock tower, the dead factory, uptown, the hospital and the graveyard. Of all those areas they cutted like 5 on the remake and they modified the racoon city streets to make then straight lines, you literally are going one way for most of the games instead of having different paths or routes like the original where even depending on wich place you wanted to go first you had different outcomes, like meeting Carlos on different buildings and receiving different items because of that, or having different Nemesis encounters or cutscenes

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone says a game doesn’t NEED to be remade because the original is perfect. The point of a remake is not to fix something. It never was. It was to experience the story in a new, fresh, and current lense.

Matt, your take on REmake 4 was exactly me. I wasn't exactly against it, but I felt 4 didn't need one. The OG game holds up so well, I would have just much rather seen a Code V remake or a 0 remake. But then I played it and it made me a believer. The game took a gritty more horror focused game where as the OG was more action focused. Ashley went from insufferable to a character to forge a real relationship with. I still really want a Code V and remake tho. I'd kill for an RE5 coop style game for 0 with online play. Has potential to be one of the best ever made.

I was skeptical on REmake 4 but outside of some small nitpicks I think they did great. I agree I think they have room for a potential Code V or 0 remake. I think them both had potential to be great but had big issues. I know Code V is pretty decisive and I'm not huge on it personally, it had its stans. Any game with Claire is a plus for me, Code V remake would be the game I'd be most interested in seeing.

Largely agree with this list, although I'm a bit biased towards both Revelations games. Sunk so much time into both of the raid modes and their honestly both really solid RE games imo. I'd have personally but the HD/home console version of Rev1 up one tier and MAYBE debate bumping up Rev2 one more also.

I have to disagree on both RE1:DC, RE1:DS, and Longbox RE1. Tbh most of this comes from a spiteful hatred of some of the achievements of the Remake's HD Remaster + Crimson Heads + That stupid broken doorknob mechanic in the East Mansion Save Room + Lack of great one-liners, but I still that the OG RE1 in its many forms is still godtier gaming. Anyone interested in playing this on a PS1/PS2 will benefit from using the ASCIIware Biohazard Controller (make sure to get the Director's Cut of RE1, because the US model of this controller is way overpriced and in Japan the O button and X button are swapped. This version allows you reconfig the controls unlike the US Longbox) because of the tight digital D-pad and the streamlining of the button placement.

I agree with this list, but RE7 in VR is the scariest thing I've ever experienced. Even though the VR implementation is pretty basic, and the PSVR has limitations, that experience was so tense and unnerving it elevates that game to the top of the list for me. Worth mentioning that I haven't played RE8 or RE4 Remake in VR yet, but from what I've heard they aren't as intense or frightening as RE7 was.

Oh RE8 is ahead of RE7 for sure. Imo RE8 is in the top 5 RE games. Like just everything about it is really good and arguably has the best story or one of the best stories an RE game has told.

I will never forgive Capcom for taking away resistance only after half a year of support. It had some of the most refreshing, creative and addictive gameplay the series has seen. And on top of everything, they replaced it with reverse? Rip one of the greatest.

I recently got RE: Deadly Silence after milling about it for a long time, and boy am I glad I got it (and a Nintendo DS for that sole reason)! Just having RE on the go (though I’m reluctant to actually take my DS out and about) is so cool!! It’s beautiful and I’m so impressed at the little changes I’ve come across so far in the Rebirth mode. Even if it were just the original version, that’s still very impressive!

Oh boy, lets see how spicy this ends up being UPDATE: Okay, I think that was a pretty fair tier list, actually. Though I must argue that original RE1 and RE1:DC be switched. As much as people dislike the new soundtrack (which aside from the clown farts, isn't that big of a deal to me, plus _technically_ the initial release of RE1:DC still had the original soundtrack sooooo) it is otherwise a real upgrade from the original. Multiple difficulty modes for new and experienced players, a demo of RE2 and, most importantly, *auto-aim* ! I mean, the original RE1 is plenty playable without auto-aim, but adding that feature back to the overseas release just makes it _so_ much comfier of an experience. Although, full disclosure, I am also an insane person with too many copies of RE1, so I'm a bit biased. Also a little surprised CV is so high. It was always one of those entries that never grabbed me. A shame too, because it feels like it tries to incorporate aspects of RE1 - 3, but ends up being less than the sum of its parts.

Great list! I think my favourite RE experience I've had recently was my time replaying RE Revelations 2 with my bf. We had a great time playing through it together and this time, we made sure to get the good ending and that honestly felt soooo good after my shitty solo playthrough ending hehe! Such a great co-op game! I love how both players feel useful in unique ways and it's something I desperately need another dose of!

People bashing 5 and 6 for being to action packed while riding RE4's dick is hilarious in every way. Everything started with RE4 but people turn a blind eye to it. That being said best version of RE4 is on the Quest 2.

Re3 remake I think the other team shot them selfs in the foot by not copying mr.x to nemesis in his sections before transforming. If you do speedrun the the game nemesis feels like he’s on your heels if you don’t he’s nowhere to be found till you hit that chase scene.

Re7 was far from a masterpiece. It only had like 2 enemy types, second half of the game was weak, characters weren't all that interesting, one of the antgonists vanishes into thin air midgame and reappears in the dlc, and the story had nothing to do with the overall narrative of the franchise despite being a "mainline" title. Good game, maybe, but masterpiece? Not even close.

Every RE engine game has a limited number enemies RE2 remake has dogs, zombies, plant zombies and lickers, that's pretty much it, RE7 had molded 4 different variations, and as far as the story yes- after 6 games following the original storyline would get stale it was played out by 6, anyways to each there own, I think 7 was a masterpiece mostly because level design, the atmosphere, depth of the people effected by Evelyn etc, and it was actually scary which had been missing and was desperately needed since RE3 Nemesis, great thing about RE games though is everyone's favorite one is usually different

For some reason I have a strong affiliation with Dead Aim too, I like the "dead" boat setting. It just works so well with the Haunted Mansion, Isolated Spaceship, or Cruise Liner at Sea. They all hit the nail for me as horror settings. Just so everyone knows RE DS has local multiplayer for portions of the game broken up across the map. Eh Outbreak is the best IMO, but OG RE with multiplayer is god tier.

I think the reason most RE titles end in a nore action oriented way is because the developers must be thinking the players have already gotten used to the scariness and their over-compensating for the end like in Re7, Re8, Re5

I have a weird relationship with Resident Evil games, I was growing up being exposed to all of them yet haven't played any of them until recently. RE franchise is over 20 years old and there are multiple generations that grew up with a certain set of games. People who grew up with classic RE games would usually prefer RE game that focuses on survival-horror aspect with lots of puzzles. Then the are people who grew up with RE 4,5 and 6 who enjoy more action-horrors. And then there are people who started their journey with RE 7,8 and the remakes. So people are usually reluctant with the RE games that are different from the generation of games they grew up with. I have no such biases and enjoy all generations, but after playing through pretty much all of the main games, I gotta say Resident Evil HD is the best game of all. To me, it captured the essence of Resident Evil perfectly even though said essence changed over the course of 20 years.

The design was great in theory, poorly implemented in practice. Inconsequential doggle that was barely used in any other game if at all. Meaningless criticism. Due to b-movie sensibilities/low budget/bad localization in RE1 she was an overqualified yet in her feelings damsel; in RE3 she had a sense of hardness from experience and a suspicion towards umbrella. This characterization is retained in the Remake. RE3 original is a very flawed game that people have a ton of nostalgia for because the Nemesis was a good marketing image.

"inconsequential doggle" can refer to the CYOA or randomizer. Both were ideas that they decided to test using RE3 and neither of them were worth developing- truly meaningless when comparing RE3 99/2020

I think the fact that every mainline game can have a solid argument for the best in the series (yes even 6) is very impressive, and kinda makes me think that RE is the most consistently good series in gaming history. Mainline games only tho, there’s a lot of spin-offs that are just stinkers
