I’m curious about the American take on Ocean as a software house- in the UK they were a majorly popular 8 and 16 bit computer game power house, granted - not all their games were great but the hit ratio was reasonably high. I think a lot of their US output was drawn from what you would call European style games- and computer games as opposed to console games at that. As a Brit I was used to the difficulties of those games and something like The Addams Family is really an extension of the ZX Spectrum classic Manic Miner for the 16tbit systems. There are a lot of games here that weren’t by Ocean at all in Europe but were published by them on the SNES in the States. A lot of their computer output in the UK was movie tie ins and arcade conversions. The movie tie ins were generally mini games tied together loosely following the theme of the given movie license. Quite a lot of the games you feature here were Commodore Amiga and Atari ST titles souped up for the SNES market but in fairness they aren’t particularly up to the standards you’d expect from Japanese and American companies on the SNES . In short - there were quite a lot of differences between computer and console titles back then and what passed muster on the Atari ST didn’t always cut it on the SNES. For us Brits Ocean are considered a big part of our Retro gaming history but it is fair to say that their forays over the pond didn’t really show them in their best light. Top video as always Sir 👍
@Frikinautas9 ай бұрын
I think than more than the actual quality of the games, there was also a kind of a culture shock involved here. Many of us Euro people were used to this kind of weird platformers (mind that killer water drop!), and when getting abroad on export they just crashed with the American mentality, more used to the Japanese style. It's not a question of who's wrong or right, but a whole mindset. They're not wrong for disliking them, nor are we for liking SOME of them (I mean, there are a couple of pieces of universal crap here).

Ocean opted to not include a battery with Jurassic Park to save money. They made some truly boneheaded moves but that’s the worst, as JP with save states is a great game and probably would have been a huge hit. The only way to beat it back in the day was by leaving your SNES on for days - or buying a Naki Game Saver.

Ouch, some of your rankings kind of hurt my nostalgic feelings on this one... Several platformers were quite highly ranked in French magazines at the time, namely the Addams Family games, Lethal Weapon, Mr Nutz, Dennis the Menace even... games very reminiscent of older computer games, while being vastly improved in terms of graphics and gameplay. I would have ranked all of them higher, especially Mr Nutz, which I still find graphically stunning - definitely not passable and at least worth a try!

Not sure if the SNES version was that different but F is kinda harsh.

Wow, I've never in my life heard anyone ever give Syndicate a bad rating, it's an Amiga and DOS classic. Of course that might be the issue, at least half of the time back then it was a crapshoot porting games from computers, specifically games made with a computer platform in mind, to a console when you lose the expanded functionality of the keyboard and/or mouse. They weren't always "pick up and play" either, more complex computer games always came with pretty dense documentation and instruction manuals.
