This is a great series idea. Sometimes when I watch the rig rundowns, it’s a bit hard to conceptualize what the player is trying to do. It helps when someone that knows way more about gear and how it’s used explains it.

Attended Tom Morello‘s guitar camp a couple years ago, and Vernon was one of the instructors. Couldn’t have been a nicer guy. Also walked some of us curious campers through his insane looking rig. I have always loved his creativity and playing. The first time I heard the opening riff to “cult of personality” blasting from another dorm room I nearly fell over.

Living Colour is the band I've seen the most live - 5 or 6 times. In a show you forget about this complex stuff, the band's communication with the audience is just so good.

I do the same thing at home (to a WAY WAY lesser degree). ABY box to make a different signal path then to different amps. It's really nice to be able to able to have a clean + reverb signal to one amp then a fuzzed out tone to another. Wicked sound when playing slide.

Vernon Reid is one of favorite guitar players. Glad you did this as I had watched twice and have to admit got lost! Love the way he is using Mooer and Zoom with Kemper's and Mesa' s: as long as it sounds good. Living Colour rock, first saw them in Glasgow 1991, they were amazing. Top three all time gigs.

Phil is so right. Hearing him live is better than any taped version. He never gets talked about enough in the world of great guitars from that generation, but he should. Id love to go to a guitar clinic and listen to his thought process.

I've been a big fan of Reid since I saw Living Color open for the Stones (I went for LC). He's the kind of guy that's meticulous about his gear and, no matter how complex, he knows exactly what to tweak to get the sound he wants. I saw him do a small club gig with his band Masque using a scaled down rig and it was amazing.

I grew up in Australia, and loved Living Colour so much. Seeing a black people was pretty rare in those days, so Vernon is more than a guitarist to me but also introduced me to social causes and struggles, "This is the Life" directly influenced my philosophy of life. Awesome player and thank you!

Outstanding explanation. Even though I have a guitar I run through a Roland GR-55, most of what Mr. Reid has going on there went right over my head when I originally watched the Rig Rundown episode. Worth watching Living Colour videos if you aren't familiar with him. Double remarkable when you realize you're looking at the '80s.

With EHX B9, C9, Key9, Mel9 pedals you don't even need a A/B box because they have a Dry out that, when plugged in, sends the pure guitar signal to a guitar amp and the normal out becomes an effect-only out that you can send to another amp or directly to P.A.

I really like rig rundowns. When I played live and now that I play at home as a pass time, I keep things quite minimal other than guitars. 3 pedals & one amp now, used to be 7 pedals & 3 amps. For me it's always been less stuff between the guitar and amp = less stuff to go wrong.

I didn't know what to think the first time I saw this, but now I see it more as a hoarder mess kind of situation. I wouldn't want to see his interior at home. I still liked your take on it and your insight, I hope you do this again. I think there was a crazy rig by a RHCP guy a few years ago as well.

The "240 Resistance Mixer" concept is not complicated at all and is extremely useful. I've been doing this for years in my home studio. I use a Radial JD7 Injector rack unit to split the input into six primary out's. This is a very good unit because each path is isolated with separate transformers, and because it's powered you don't lose signal "juice" when split and each line is quiet, which can be a problem with passive units. (His active pickups probably help with signal loss, and he has so much horse power on the back end of each signal path that it probably is not an issue.) I first experimented with this idea many years ago with one of those Voodoo Labs "Amp Selector" floor switchers which has four outs. It was pretty good, but the switches were always going bad. Voodoo Labs has had problems with their switch inventory, and i got tired getting it fixed, so i looked for something else and the JD7 solved the problem. Radial and others make several floor switchers but i really wanted more than two or three outs. Never used that DOD unit ... if Vernon uses it, it must work well. They're inexpensive too !

Saw them live a couple years in Charlotte, NC. Benefit show that they came down to play for free basically. Got to get a to close up look at that rig and talk to his tech for a few. It was a scaled down version because they were only doing that one show and it was insane. That guy earned his money. I have seen these guys several times, great band, great musicians and I would encourage anyone if they come to your city go check them out.

Im building a similar rig but much more consolidated. I designed it to be a hybrid digital and analog dawless rig where me and my bandmate can run drums, guitar, cello, a bass with a home made midi controller, vocals, synths and a sampler all with fully integrated effects and pedal boards all through one 6 channel mixer and send all our sound to front of house while still having complete control

I’ve been playing around with parallel splitting my signal with a volume pedal on one side so I can mix in effects like delay, my Boss SY-1, and extreme distortion into my basic sound. I then put the two signal back into my 2 AC15 vox channels. I can’t imagine doing it with 4 routes however!

Was just at a show front row 3 days ago. The stage crew couldn’t get Vernon’s rig on it was hilarious. It took them like 20 mins. Then they forgot to put on Vernon’s whammy bar he rolled his eyes 👀. Anyways the show went on and it was great was awesome to blow my ears out to that.

Dam my rig consists of 1 of 4 guitars now, a digitech RP500, a crate 50 watt head I got from the good will store for $34 and a tx812 bass cabinet that has been rewired for two 4 speaker 2 ohm channels with the crossover and horn removed from the loop. Thats about as much as my concentration level can handle let alone something like that..
