You know, I almost didn't watch today's video, but I'm glad I did. As a writer, I normally refrain from speaking up about books I don't like (there are plenty for which I have positive things to say). And I've noticed that you rarely speak out in a negative way, as well, and almost never rant or use negativity as clickbait. I appreciate that. But I also appreciate your measured critique here. It's useful information, as you insightfully articulate *why* it's not working for you (and you've steered me well clear of this series). Thanks for always being judicious about your use of negativity. You have power, gained through hard work to build a respected brand, and wield it in a thoughtful way. Cheers!

THIS. Is exactly how I felt. Every step of the way. I wanted to like it, it had promise and then… it just never took off. I am bored by the romance. The group dynamic fell flat. The pacing was awful - nothing truly plot progressive happened for 95% of the book. At one point one big reveal was a character straight telling you after you got the initial clue a ways back, but nothing else led into that reveal. What editor let this book go through as is? Was SJM just phoning it in? Does no one bother to say no to her because they know her books will sell? I’m so confused

Thank you. (SPOILER) I've fallen in love with the world and characters in book one and couldn't wait to get to the second one which was amazing. the third was good but Then shit went down... That stupid novella of feyre chopping for Christmas and reminding everyone that Rhys Fortune is gigantic and ACOSF DISGUSTED ME... So many potential and open doors for the plot to develop especially for nesta... The only path for her was to go villain. Betray them, steal the objects, marry Eris... Anything! But noo we've got an unrealistic battle where girl with no actual battling experience and serious injuries murdering immortals winning with the power of friendship. Not only nesta... Feyre, Rhys, and especially Cassian went down... Did she really think people would love the character she created? A fragile sick love puppy thinking that everyone hating him because he wasn't born Royal.. not ones did I see him act like a general yet he have plenty of time to train nuns for 300 pages and a big dick for her to use... Sara j Maas! More like Sarah j trash

Don't be scared. SJM has her detractors for a reason. And some creators even grew a lot after admitting to it and owning it. I trust people less when they hate a lot of things they read, it gives me the vibe that they are reading things to be controversial. To me it was less owning it, publicly hating on SJM books quite literally gets people views! Lots of people love her books but lots of people “hate read” them as well. I personally dislike her ACOTAR series but have been surprisingly enjoying the Throne of Glass series after seeing how much hate they get (at least on booktube which I mostly watch, not generally). I haven’t read her other books! I love regans videos because she obviously curates her book selection to hopefully love everything she reads and genuinely hopes she will. So her not liking a book I very much trust! Though reading is subjective and I’ve seen many people like this book as well :) All this to say, I think there is a balance of praise and criticism for SJM that I think makes sense! It’s a lot more controversial to me to dislike a book or series that is universally loved - I hated the poppy war and every single person I watch loves it! :) it’s an interesting discussion to have!

Oh girl I totally feel this. I actually decided I was done with this series after the first novel. It just kind of feels like I’m reading about the same characters in ACOTAR. But the writing almost made it seem like the expectation in book 1 was that I already had the nostalgia and love for the characters as if I’d met them and had their backstories (Cuz that’s honestly the only reason I still read the new ACOTAR stuff). It just didn’t land for me, it feels like her ‘adult’ novels are still very new adult, there’s just a lot more F bombs, a lot less character development and plot cohesiveness so I’m gonna have to exit stage left here. Caveat, I don’t think this series not working for me makes SJM a terrible author or other readers terrible for enjoying it. It didn’t work for me, if it works for you that’s great! Great Video!

Some authors, when they get big, start to put more efforts into their writing because of bigger audience. And some think they're the king/queen of the world and can publish anything they want. Maas falls into the second category unfortunately. Her last 5 or 6 books were mind bogglingly stupid and immature, and I'm done giving her my money. She's not going to learn because apparently most people don't have problem with her trash. P. S. This is the first time I've actually seen you giving a book 1 star Reagan. 😂 That says a lot.

I'm reluctant to read it because SJM's latest books are just... not for me. I started TOG and ACOTAR in high school and ate it upppp. But the newest ACOTAR (Nesta's) book killed me. I was so disappointed, I basically despise it because it's zero plot but all smut, which is not even good. I would not eat at their table, let me tell you that. When every character continuously has sexual thoughts/does sth sexual, even in the most inappropriate moments, I just die. And since this series is also adult, I feel like no editor will cut down on SJM's ridiculous sex stuff - there is just too much, it's not like I hate smut but I don't want it as 90% of the plot, sorry. Also, I get so annoyed when I read the same line over and over and over again. GET AN EDITOR for Christ's sake, because it feels like a bad fanfic. PS your frustration with this book mirrors my own with the 4th ACOTAR; sending love because I wanted to punch a wall reading it and I hope you didn't ♥

Now there’s all this world building to do that didn’t happen in the last book because we were actually developing characters… but my question is can’t we have world building and character development at the same time?

The first book got me wanting to check out more of her books. I LOVED the first CC! The 2nd frustrated me so much. I only gave it a 3.5 (But Im still not sure on the rating lol). i HATED the ending and I hated what happened to my favorite side couple after I was HYPED for them from the first book. I want more Hypaxia in general. I appreciated her one scene with Bryce and I was hoping she'd be more in their friend group. And now that you mentioned it, this book definitely needs more of a highlight of the women in this book. It's just Bryce and a bunch of hot men (and most have a thing for her because duh!). The changing of POV got tiring, the plot that ended up not being that important...was weird? The overuse of the word MATE once AGAIN! I'm sick lmao.

Loved Hypaxia. She’s the only person with any sense, in my opinion.

This just showed that SJM didn't plan this series properly. There were things set up in the first book that was thrown away in this one. Like, what was the point of mentioning Hunt's dad in the ending?

Awesome vlog! Thank you for this vlog and book review because I was on the undecided on whether to even continue with book 1 and so reading this book so now thanks to you I am definitely not reading this series. I love SJM’s Throne of Glass series but I just got through the first 3 books of her A Court of Throne and Roses series but I can’t and won’t re-read this series or read any other of her books with those characters.

The way Regan feels about this book is how I felt about the first one. Like so much of the plot was a waste of time since it was just all revealed and told to the main character at the end…!! Like what was the point of investigating if she didn’t even have to figure it out? I’m glad I didn’t read the second book, tho I’ll admit I was curious enough to let myself be spoiled to the ending.

I am so here for your rants! Any reading vlog by you is fun, but this one was particularly amazing because I loved to hear your thoughts despite the fact that they weren't all positive. Not every book is going to be a winner, and I think it's important to hear all types of thoughts and feelings on these types of books!!

Crescent City is my favorite SJM series (apparently this is controversial 😂). I enjoyed ACOTAR, and find ToG just okay. I’m not a diehard SJM fan and don’t engage with her follower community much so I always appreciate hearing other perspectives on her books! It’s funny to hear you say you found the banter in this book annoying, because that’s one of the reasons I love the side characters so much! 😂 I find Bryce to be a much more realistic, flawed heroine vs Feyre. I am absolutely sick of the “mate” situation tho 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

I waited a whole year with this video in my “watch later” list because i thought to myself “I will watch this when I finish the book!” and it’s been a year and I still haven’t finished the book. I have been stuck reading the first 300 pages, picking it up every couple months and not being able to keep going. I’m so disappointed. One of my good friends read it and LOVED it and she keeps trying to convince me to finish. I don’t understand because I loved the first one?? Maybe because it came out at the beginning of covid and I was desperate for a fun distraction? idk. But yeah this was a DNF. Also just to mention, I love watching you hate on a book!! It is so much fun listening to your rant 😂

I actually love that you've spoken about not liking a book! Personally I gave this book 4 stars but I completely get where you're coming from - the first half of the book dragged soooooo badly for me and if I hear the word mate again I may scream 😅 Thank you for sharing your thoughts!x

My favorite reading vlog thus far, don't be afraid to not focus on the positive! I feel like it validates how reading isn't always a win. We can be disappointed by books, annoyed, bored, all of it. I feel like I mainly hear positive reviews from people on all the books they read. I don't enjoy every book I read! Or parts of books bore me!

god i couldn't agree more about hunt and bryce, like give me tension !!!! give me drama !!!! they're both my least favourite characters in the book and their relationship is so cringey to read about but i was willing to put up with it if there was a side-relationship to root for..... but alas 😭

I liked it a bit more than you but all of my complaints were right in line with you. There were WAY too many alpha males, the tropes that I dislike with Calaena are used with Bryce and I really did not love the plot and the ending was pretty underwhelming for me. So I know this was hard for you but I feel so validated so I am glad you posted this vlog!

SJM is a hit or miss with me. I’ve read through acotar (1- 3 and novella) and now currently through throne of glass and in both series, I like certain books more than others. And I honestly don’t know if I’ll pick up her newest books once I’m done with ToG. It probably depends how the rest of the books pan out for me 😋 anyway, I’m sorry this book wasn’t one you liked but it was still a fun vlog to watch!

I’ve never seen you this way! I’ve been watching for years! Love the honesty!! I wish more were like this! An author doesn’t always write every book fabulously but it seems the majority review them that way. Mate is a crappy word when there are so many to choose from! Keep being your lovely self! 💕☀️ Chelsea Palmer has a video about her theories how all the worlds are connected, it’s worth watching, it might make you feel a little better 😊☀️

Sadly, this series has been a total miss for me. I tried to finish the first book, but found it so dull and almost like it was written for contract obligations more than the author wanting to tell a good story... I'm not sure if Maas has lost some kind of writing spark or if she's in a rut of some kind, but still needs to reach her writing targets by her publisher. But her last few books (ACOTAR 3.5/4 and Book 1 to this series) has lost the magic she used to have in her writing! I really hope she finds her spark again, because I miss being hyped for her books and then not being let down by them!
this hyped release was bad + setting up my bookshelves!
