To be honest I still not excatly understand the phenomenon of 1975, but he seems to be a fascinating person, a bit unhinged and mannered, but still interesting in interviews. He and Amelia inspired me to download tinder for the very first time in my life and it's definitely a quite fun adventure. One of my very favorite Burroughs books is Cities of the Red Night. A 1981 apocalyptic sci fi novel where the population is afflicted by a radioactive virus. And I have seen him read multiple times. I love his musical collaborations with both Laurie Anderson and Kurt Cobain (Nirvana). I live his voice and delivery. There are many videos of him reciting and just talking. I miss you, Uncle Bill. RIP. Rimbaud’s poetry is terrific. Born in the 1850s. He got attention for writing as a child; the bulk of his work was done in his adolescent/young adult years and he stopped writing at age 20!!! He lived an adventurous life and was a gun runner. He died age 37. His bio is very interesting (as is Burroughs’s).

So I have a genuine problem with not finishing books if they don’t entirely catch me. And most don’t. When I first started reading On The Road, I put it down, it was so boring and winded and I couldn’t catch on. However! I picked it back up several months later and read on, without expecting the plot to come and this was the first book ever where I was able to do that, and when I kept on reading, almost like a revelation, it dawned on me that that was the whole point. The words, so beautifully put together, the feeling you get from them and the rhythm of of all, without a goal, kind of like music itself. I actually became so engrossed in it that I would walk while reading and hated to put it down in the presence of other people - not because of the story, but because it made me feel almost high. In hindsight, what caught me and what I appreciate about it so tremendously is that it is mad. It has that Dionysian energy Nietzsche talks about and I am fool for philosophy and believe that we are missing madness from our lives and our art and Jack somehow captured it and put it out there for the ones ready to get high on it. I really think that’s what it’s about. I can’t remember a damn thing that happened in this book, but what would I do to relive the madness of reading it… it reminded me that the delirious happiness of excitement was accessible in the world and especially in myself. High is the best word to describe it really.

I would like to proudly say that I have read Infinite Jest from front to back. Whether it was worth it is a whole other matter.

Poetic lyrics that are stunning and complex. I only know one of their songs and I guess it must be the exception that proves the rule !? "I only called her one time, maybe it was two times, don't think it was three times, can't be more than four times..." 🤣

Very interesting! Those books sound really interesting. I saw the 1975 once and wow I don't think I will go back considering some of the stuff he said. It was like a festival and how he described women was not for me lol .

Once at a backpacker bar in Cambodia with that exact Kerouac quote on the wall, I took the bold stand that On the Road is lazy writing and then became known among the backpackers as “the woman who hates Kerouac.” Now I feel validated. Thank you. (*but I agree with your notes on historical context)
