Monster and Berserk are the two series I would recommend. Berserk's main character Guts is the personification of struggling against fate. While it initially seems he's just random anti-hero with revenge being the one and only thing driving his character and actions as the story unravels he's the epitome of what it means to be human. The good, bad, and what that fills in the shades of gray are all part of his character. At times he comes off as an edgy anti-hero. He does some things that are outright evil and horrific. Yet he grows and becomes a person worthy of admiration. Both series have incredible villains who aren't just mustache twirling evil and are very compelling. Monster is a psychological thriller/mystery that I feel I'd be doing a disservice to by trying to go into why it's good. Both series are seinen and while Berserk has alot of fighting it's definitely not something you'd allow a middle schooler to read.

Denji in Chainsaw Man is in certain cases the antithesis of the typical anime protagonist, he basically gets led around the whole series, his motivations are purposefully shallow and he really only cares about whoever he is "in love with" at the time and being able to eat good food. I could see how someone could find him annoying as a protagonist but on the other hand I can also see people finding that difference to be interesting, especially after reading multiple manga where the protagonist is the typical goody-two shoes ready to save the world.
@ellhoot41222 жыл бұрын
I get that his point is to be shallow and flat. However I can't help but be dissatisfied and disappointed. He's just as cringe as the goody two shoes protagonists you critique. It is available on Shonen Jump & is therefore aimed at a slightly younger audience, but imo is one of the best shounens out there. It has a bit of a slow start, but once it gets going, it REALLY gets going. It also kinda feels like the story grows more mature as it goes on. It is also complete, so you can actually get the whole story. Other manga I would recommend are Delicious in Dungeon (or Dungeon Meshi) and Mob Psycho 100, but they aren’t in Shonen Jump so you might have some trouble finding them. When someone who likes literature asks for manga reccomendation we need to talk about Inio Asano and Naoki Urasawa. Inio Asano is someone who likes to write characters, their heavy character-driven works and range from Sci-Fi (Dead Dead Demons of Dedededestruction, yes that's the tittle, 12 volumes) to magical realism (Nijigahara Holograph, 1 volume). All of his works are in essence a humann drama, my pics are Solanin (2 volumes), especially considering what you said about the first two chapters of Monsters 8, or Goodnight Punpun (13 volumes) if you ever feel like getting depressed. On the opposite shore we have Naoki Urasawa, someone who has really plot driven works, not to say his characters aren't amazing. Monster (18 volumes), as some other commenters also mentioned, has this perfect combination of plot driven and character driven storytelling in this conflict of Dr. Tenma and the said "Monster". At the same time, Urasawa can also make some of the most absurd cliches of media plausible with his 20th Century Boys (22 volumes) and the antagonist goal of "taking over the world". Apart from these two, I can also recommend Sayonara Eri and Look Back (both 1 volume), both by the same author of Chainsaw Man and that's where similarities end. Both are human dramas, in a weird way, both are about different ways of seeing loss. The feeling of loosing someone of something dear to you and how the people deal with it. If we are talking about romance Bloom Into You (8 volumes) is a beautiful piece of writing about love and what it means to someone who is still trying to understand what it is... especially when the loved one is from the same gender. And as a closing note on manga we can talk about the "classics" of manga: Akira (6 volumes), Ghost in the Shell (1 volume), Mushishi (10 volumes), Death Note (11 volumes). among others. As an extra, so to say, there's also the Monogatari Series by the author Nisio Isin, although they are novels, they are heavy influenced by the "manga culture". As a warning, they are weird, really weird, but Isin is an amazing writer and if you can you should check out the first volume of Bakemonogatari (the first entry on the series, after that follows Kizumonogatari, etc)

"One Punch Man" I believe is a must (even as someone who watched the anime first, the manga is incredible). The series is a nice balance between being a comedy/spoof of the superhero genre, while also taking a serious look at issues that arise naturally in the world. Such as the main character's relationship with public opinion after suddenly becoming famous, and at times, controversial. The art style is one of the best in manga as well, love it to bits! I'm more of an anime person, and in that medium I'd recommend Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Steins;Gate, two of my favorite series ever.

weirdly, I'd recommend the Fullmetal Alchemist manga over either of the anime. I think Brotherhood rushed it's early episodes because it assumed everybody already saw the early episodes of the original anime, or read the manga, so the pacing is almost kind of recap-esque in Brotherhood until you get to the material that wasn't covered in the first anime adaptation. and then the original anime diverges from canon, so it is it's own thing entirely. the manga feels the most cohesive to me.

To Your Eternity is one of my favourite manga of all time, it deals with topics like what it means to be human, what happens when you live past everyone you know and has a little bit of action in there to balance out the emotional stuff. You really connect with the main character and the side characters by the time you're done.

I definitely recommend Banana Fish. It is an older manga, actually from the 1980's, and is a more realistic and mature story. The story also has many references to classic literature. 26:36 as someone who loves csm i totally get u. csm is really fast paced, which might be a reason its hard to connect with the characters. i saw another comment point this out but most people love csm bcos if u compare it to other shounen mangas, its a really unique and refreshing take on the genre. i highly recommend tatsuki fujimoto's (csm author) other works tho like his one shots: goodbye eri, look back, etc. he really focuses on the mental state of characters and potrays things in really interesting ways. i think it didnt show much on csm since there was too much violence and absurdism, but it really shows on his other works
@jambott55202 жыл бұрын
Chainsaw man also takes a lot of time to focus on the mental state of the characters. (Spoilers below) The whole force behind the story is makima manipulating denji's life, bringing him up so she can tear him down to lows he had never felt. An entire chapter is spent on showing just how fucking low denji has fallen. There is also the aftermath of the darkness devil, showing how all the characters responded to that happening, power getting PTSD, aki getting cold feet. The core of chainsaw man, what pushes the story forward isn't the fighting. Its the emotional story, the drama. That's the meat and the violence is just the dressing.
@monohanie57782 жыл бұрын
@@jambott5520 yes i totally agree, this is what i love the most about chainsaw man and the way fujimoto writes about the mental state of people. its a melodrama disguised as a violent absurd shounen and that mixture is literally my shit. sometimes it just takes another read for one to catch onto such themes

So glad I clicked this video that was on my recommendation, hearing your story about reading manga for the first time made me so happy. I have a lot of recommendation, of course. But I'll have to shorten it out because I'm sure you've gotten a lot already. The first one is Berserk. Easily the best manga I've ever read. It's about a man who is constantly taking L's on his life but he had to carry on and keep living. He's the embodiment of the word 'struggle'. Please give it a try. Second one is a bit mouthful, it's called I sold my life for ten thousand yen per year. It is adapted from the book Three Days of Happiness. It is a one-shot manga and is very very short, only 18 chapters (16+2). When listening to your impression about Kaijuu No. 8 I immediately thought about this manga. I'm fairly sure you can relate to the main character a lot. Anyways, can't wait to hear another story of yours. Maybe another manga review? I'm already subscribed.

Great historical manga with excellent plot in a more realistic world without super powers, set in Hokkaido in the early 1900s where the characters are searching for a hidden treasure of gold, the map to the treasure has been tattooed on 24 escaped prisoners skin. We have the main group, led by the immortal Sugimoto a veteran of the Russo Japanese war, his Ainu guide Ashirpa who is the daughter of the man who originally hid the gold, and Shiraishi a prison escape artist and one of the escaped prisoners himself. The other two groups that are sometimes allies sometimes enemies are the a rogue element of the Imperial Japanese Army’s 7th Division led by Lieutenant Tsurumi, and another gathering of escaped criminals led by former samurai Toshizo Hijikata. Lots of old western influence in the story, it’s serious, funny, educational, and just a blast to read or watch the anime adaptation.

I really suggest reading/watching Mob Psycho 100! I’ve rewatched it tons of times and it’s still amazing each time. The way the characters are written are like no other series i’ve seen and the way Mob grows throughout the series is spectacular. I also recommend reading or watching Demon Slayer. It’s another amazing series, one that I just finished and I couldn’t have been happier with how it ended. The anime adaptation is just as good too and ufotable did amazing with the animation. Your lie in April is one of my favorites. The concept is really good. Throughout the 11 volumes and the anime all i can say is it’s one of the best i’ve seen. I’ve recommended it to friends that aren’t interested in anime or manga at all and they loved it. There aren’t really any concepts like it out there. It’s based on instruments, so the manga is kind of lacking when one of the characters are playing a piece, so i do recommend the anime; but they’re both amazing either way.

I finally finished the video (lol). I really like your perspective on these series. I’m glad you really like Jujutsu Kaisen. The Shibuya Incident is amazing and the Culling game is too. The animation for the anime is also really good. Your lie in April is a romance but it’s sad. I also really like how you appreciate the mangaka and not reading illegally. If you’re looking for series that have good art, i definitely recommend Dr. Stone and Toilet-bound Hanako-kun. Both also having anime adaptations. Dr. Stone is great but not everyone likes it. It’s about the world turning into stone via a strange green light. One of the main characters- Senku is really into science, and he uses science to revive all of humanity. It focuses more on preparing for the fights than the fights itself. I wasn’t that into science before but this series really made me interested. For Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, it’s also amazing. It’s about there being supernaturals in a school the female main character goes to and she goes to a supernatural that grants wishes in hopes of finding love. There are some fights but it doesn’t focus that much on them. The chapters also release once a month and I think that would be easy for you. But i regularly see people appreciating the art, even if they haven’t read it before.

seeing as you’re interested in literature, you should check out bungou stray dogs! it’s in the supernatural/action genre and is also a seinen. bungou (文豪) translates into english as “literary”, and the characters are all named after real classic authors and poets. these characters also have superpowers which are named after works of theirs as well! the main cast are named after japanese authors (osamu dazai, akutagawa ryuunosuke, etc) but american and russian authors also make an appearance too (fitzgerald, poe, dostoyevsky just as a few examples). it’s an interesting concept to explore! it also has pretty great themes - it is a bit existentialist (in that it has lots of questions about finding one’s purpose in life), delves into questions surrounding morality and greyness, redemption (of sorts) and recovery from trauma. and - even if it might not be your cup of tea (because it definitely might not be for everyone with the themes i mentioned and the story also can get a bit complex/dark!), i think it’s intriguing to see how the author took these well-recognised literary figures and integrated themes from their works into the characters and storyline. it got me into researching and reading japanese authors which is really cool! so i wholeheartedly recommend giving it a try :D

Great video! I think is that Jujitsu Kaisen is much more set on shonen tropes than the chainsaw man (not entirely though) making it maybe way more impactful to someone largely unfamiliar with manga/anime. One of the reasons I love chainsaw man and tatsuki fujimoto in general is his ability to fly at the face of how a normal shonen story would play out, making it largely unpredictable. When it comes to shonen, I’ve always found series that are unpredictable/off-kilter being a strong trait to keep me invested in what’s happening (especially in series like Hunter x Hunter) I would happily recommend the manga Oyasumi Punpun, Vinland Saga, Death note, and if you like horror and twisted art, check out anything by the author Junji Ito.

If you ever wanna give One Piece, Naruto, and any other long series a shot, I'd just take it by a saga-by-saga approach. Think of them as these large book series, where each saga is one book. I think that'd make it a bit more digestible haha. I can't speak as much for Naruto, as I've only watched the anime adaptation some years ago, but One Piece is absolutely amazing as a manga. I just love how uniquely malleable its tone is. It can be AS whimsical as it wants, and AS serious as it wants, without either feeling out of place. This especially goes for character designs as well. There's some really over-the-top, goofy designs, and yet they manage not to clash with some of the more serious, cooler looking designs as well. Very fun world, a lot of cool lore down the line, amazing payoffs, and its unexpectedly made me tear up quite a few times. Absolute blast of a series.

I think you should give Attack on Titan a second chance, as a huge fan of it I have to say the series is close to perfection atleast imo. The anime makes it even better, the music, animation and voice acting are all stunning. The story is amazing, the main cast is written close to perfection and the themes are more mature. It is a shonen borderline pushing for a seinen.

i recommend you to try and read berserk, the beginning( first 10-20 chapters) I personally find super boring), but there are justifying circumstances( it was written way before the main story) but after that the story is so universally loved and it's just a masterpiece, at one moment it becomes too dark for some readers, but I very much enjoyed the whole story( a big Dostoevsky fan here, nothing could scare me after that)

A couple of people have briefly mentioned it, but Death Note would definitely be up your alley. A classic from the same time as Naruto, but is very different. A supernatural thriller that tackles justice and morality through the main question: "Are there some people it's ok to kill?" It's also a decent length at 108 chapters split into 12 volumes, though it's dialogue heavy so it takes a little longer to read than what you've tried so far.

first 10 minutes were literally me when I started getting into it for the first time lmao except I was in high school. also i'm so excited you liked jjk, the author kinda acts with the story like the shonen tropes hurt him personally when he was a kid and he makes fun of them and subverts them while also kinda leaning into them. also the reason you felt the action more in jjk is bc the author is really good at paneling the fight scenes and you can feel every punch

I recommend Space Brothers. It's story about brotherhood and their promise to go to space together. The main character Nanba believe he is born unlucky and therefore accept his fate as commoner who think his dream of going to space is a futile effort while his younger brother Hibito has all the luck and managed to become an astronaut. It all change when Nanba was told to listen back to a tape recording when they were still a child. It's a journey filled with re-discovering oneself and moving forward while trying to remember what was lost along the way.

Btw you should really watch the Jujutsu Kaisen anime, it's only the first part of the manga so far. The animation and voice acting is top tier and really adds to the experience. Whether you watch sub or dub is up to you but it's definitely a must watch. Season 2 is coming sometime soon and it'll cover the Shibuya arc- I can't wait to see that animated. ALSO YES THE ART IS SO WELL SUITED FOR ACTION SCENES. Gege isn't the best technical artist, but his biggest talent is the fight choreographies and the off the wall power system.

My all time favorite is Girls' Last Tour. It's pretty short, though somewhat tricky to find in full legally or illegally. Nothing has a better and more plot necessary character dynamic, or a more grounded, touching theme and perspective. It's not action packed. It's not especially dramatic. It just is what it is, and what it is is the essence of beauty.

I recommend rereading chainsaw man, by yourself, in your room, in one sitting, in a while after experiencing other series I know its a big time commitment, itll probably take 6-7 hours, but there are so many details, character details, world details, that when noticed and taken into consideration make the series much better on reread. Theres a shocking amount of philosophy going into the characters that lies under the surface, and the story structure is reminiscent of a greek tragedy, which i really appreciate. You should definitely reread it, give it another shot, and who knows maybe make a video on it if you connect with it the second time?

I found chainsaw man super engaging. I never knew what was gonna happen next, and I found denji to be a complex character. Or rather complex because of his simplicity. He starts out not caring about anything but himself and his dog. It’s a story about denji finding himself and learning things, which avoids shonen tropes (which is part of why a lot of people like it, myself included). The art and panel layout is really great to me as well. The characters are all really great, i love the bomb fiend arc ending where denji, in his naivety, offers to run away with her. And she heads to the meeting place, before dying. Kind of signifying how it was impossible for them to run away, while also fully demonstrating how there’s more to makima than we know. It’s crazy, bombastic, AND kinda deep, but maybe not the best manga to start with. Some manga I’d recommend are berserk, which is highly influential, original devilman, not the best but good and important which also pushed boundaries for the time it was made, and gundam the origin, a manga about giant robots but also has character relationships and politics which are actually very engaging, plus giant robots are cool. I want to eat your pancreas is also really good, no fighting, a bitter sweet love manga. Also if you’re interested in western comics I have plenty of recommendations for that as well

you should totally reread chainsaw man when you get a bit more experience reading manga! it’s purpose is to subvert shonen tropes and most of the appeal comes from people who’ve gotten bored with series like black clover and one piece and wanted to try something completely different lol. a lot of people read it in a week or even a day and it doesn’t really stick with them but personally reading it twice and over a long period of time made it way more impactful also I would recommend Monster by Naoki Urasawa, Goodnight Punpun, Berserk, and Fire Punch (another manga by chainsaw man’s author) for seinen stories with darker themes :) berserk is kind of disturbing at the beginning but it’s known for its amazing art and really good world building

I'll preface this by saying Chainsaw man is an easy contender for my favorite manga I've ever read, but I actually really get a lot of your criticism. Denji is a *weird* character from just like a writing perspective. He's almost a non person or like a caveman because his life has been so awful, he's basically just driven by base desires for food and sex and he doesn't have much going on outside of that, he hasn't really had a chance to develop as a person. Which is just such a weird way to make a exposition friendly outsider character, especially when contrasted to the totally insane and surprisingly deep story. But that's part of what gripped me to his character, he's like Conan the Barbarian dropped into a China Miéville book, and a big appeal of his journey to me was getting to see him experience stuff and grow, while also being tragically exploited. But at the same time I can totally see how he can just be abrasive, I'm pretty numb to anime-isms, I grew up with a naruto fan, so if you don't have the skin to deal with obnoxious characters, I really can't blame you. And I think that's a lot of it, Chainsaw Man just might be kinda hard to get into for people not already into a lot of the stuff chainsaw man plays with and twists. There's a bit of genre literacy needed to just put up with some stuff and I totally get that I also generally agree that the other characters and the world are more interesting. A lot of Anime/Manga side characters pale in comparison to just how independent and motivated almost everyone we see is. Bascially everyone has their trauma's and damages but that isn't their whole person, they all have quite a bit going on and they just seem like people (And demonic ideal entities representing concepts) just trying to get by in an awful chaotic world teetering on the edge of just falling apart at any moment

i strongly recommend to you Oshimi Shuzo's work. Specifically Blood On the Tracks , Happiness or Flowers of Evil. He's one of the best manga artist i've ever read and makes some if the best dissection of characters.
