Another great video- It was funny when your initial response having seen the show first was that it was moving at such a faster pace in the beginning compared to the show- when I tried to watch the show I got to season 2, eager for the prison arc, and it was like "oh god are they going to seriously spend a whole season at the farm?" - the pacing of the show felt so brutal as someone familiar with the comics

I don't know how you skipped over the fact that there is an on-page makeout scene between the Governor and his toothless zombie daughter 🤢🤮 it literally made me gag and feel physically ill!
@jd18005 ай бұрын
She was actually his niece. The governor was a pathetic coward and his brother was very much the opposite of that, so he assumed the identity of his deceased brother and started staring at zombie faces as part of an effort to harden himself against the horrors of the post apocalyptic world.
@Malevolence4603 ай бұрын
@@jd1800was that the case in the comics? I know the novels are very much like that, but I know for a fact that they were different than the comics when I first heard about them
@jd18003 ай бұрын
@@Malevolence460 It's not directly stated in the comics, but the novels and comics are in the same continuity, so it's technically canon for both. I suppose if someone didn't like that twist then there's nothing in the comics that keeps them from considering it non-canon.

@Malevolence4603 ай бұрын
I love how we shared a similar emotional reaction to most of the tragic events that happened in this, I first read it when I was 10 and the show first started, but as I caught up and went over the point I was at in the show i honestly loved the comics so much more, the show had some phenomenal additions don’t get me wrong - but they really don’t make up for the subtractions from the graphic novels story in the slightest. I feel like the show got corrupted by greed, past the point of which the main characters actors get so burned out or rich they don’t want to be in it anymore. The day that we get a loyal animation adaption will be for songbooks. And to be honest, once they wrap up the loyal comics adaption, I would LOVE if they did an animation merger for both the stories. I would prefer if they stuck loyal to the comics and expanded the story with the television additions, but if they made a loyal one already then who cares- doing an animation merger would be great for bringing the shows cast in to voice act their parts too, especially since it would be a lot simpler work (in the sense of like comfort, voice acting is still a very hard job, however a good handful of the television cast actually have done voice work before- for Amazon’s animated adaption of Robert Kirkmans other graphic novel hit: Invincible, Glenn’s Actor Steven Yeun actually voices the main character in it too) my ramblings aside, this was a phenomenal watch! I’m about to start up your Attack On Titan video next :)
@t-vann482 күн бұрын
A very big standard issue with comics early on is that they need to justify their existence. This was Kirkmans first HUGE comic so i think thats why early on it moves so quickly. The high drama early on makes it more eyecatching. I think in my opinion once you get to the governor it goes fron a good comic to a phenomenal comic. And it just keeps improving from there for the bulk of the run.

As someone who has read the comics, I loved this review! I read the source material during my journey watching the show. There was a certain death in the tv show that irked me so much that I couldn’t watch anymore. (Not the same death as you. Lol) In my opinion, the comics are MUCH better than the show. As much as I loved the show, it just dragged way too much. I loved your reaction to the “final death” (I don’t want to spoil it for the viewers who haven’t finished the video.) I think the reason why it sucked is because it was so out of nowhere. Kind of like in real life. You never know when you will die. That feeling you felt seeing that death was an example of how out of nowhere deaths can be. It sucked, gosh it sucked, but I thought it was necessary to the overall meaning of the story. “If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.”

Great video. One thing to note about the pacing at the beginning is that as it was coming out, people read it 1 issue a month, so a lot kinda has to happen to keep things moving at a decent pace. But I totally agree, reading them all back to back makes the pacing go super fast

I never watched the show but I did read really far into the comics, I read them as individual issues instead of volumes and I never got the impression it was moving too fast. Made it from start to finish and I loved the ride. Time for my input. In a lot of ways The Walking Dead was kind of a vector for me to a good zombie series. I read the hell out of zombie books, and they're all so repetitive so the same so everyone somehow is scared of these beings that are quite easy to dispatch. But The Walking Dead felt like the people were the real threat and they wanted the focus on that, but then it sort of sidewinds and becomes a very weird hybrid of politics in the series. I agree with you at most points you say are wrong, Andrea still gets the same death in The Walking Dead series but sooner, meanwhile Carol seems to take Andrea's place and in a lot of ways I can live with that. Carol was just such a depressing character in the comics. But I definitely lost interest around when negan appeared even though Negan was who I was waiting for to appear this whole time. It's because they really just turned him into this political being and made it all about sitting at a table and discussing politics. And when you're in a series where you're focused on action that's not a good idea. I've always felt like killing off Carl in the series was probably the point where everybody checked out. Because in a way you can't have the series ending how it is if you don't have Carl. So by the end of The Walking Dead I was seriously disappointed because I knew it was all going to be put on Judith, an underdeveloped character. And that's when I checked out from the series. I will always say that the comics are superior, because there are very few things that the series does better before and after Negan. Carol and Daryl and Merle are my favorite characters to watch throughout the series until negan, they get absolutely nerfed just so Negan can come in and then play a weird role. Rick's death is truly the most heartbreaking thing and the entire series for me, besides Andrea and Merle. He had a killer redemption arc.

In regards to the fast pace, comics are generally a monthly release so volume 1 having that much story is really 6 months of story. There are certainly comics that have a slower pace, but if you’re an indie like Walking Dead you need to keep your initial readers hooked so that your book can get off the ground.

I know its been a year but I've done the very same so I figure I might give a brief review too The Walking Dead, reading through it, was frustrating at times. There was lots of filler, lots of boring character drama that felt pointless, and some decisions Kirkman made which I didn't agree with (Rick getting with Andrea, but I guess it made some sense). There was also Kirkman's dialogue, which I 100% love at times, but other times it just feels like "IM VERY EMOTIONAL ABOUT THING" "Thats okay but what about other thing" "You're right, I'm sorry" and that gets tedious. Also with the whole, RIck goes place, screws up, becomes sane, becomes insane schtick repeating constantly. At times I'd be reading through, waiting for someone unimportant (as in, forgotten by the story) to die so it may progress. Gabriel was the most egregious example of this, but it happened with others. But when it hit? It hit you HARD. The entire arc with Negan, the Whisperers (which were a concept I loved), the travel north to Alexandria and the hordes they came across. A lot of this was incredible. The characters were incredible at the best of times, you could feel how far they had gone. Rick wanting to execute Thomas, Rick and Carl on the run and hiding in the house with the telephone, Eugene's struggle to be important. At times I wish carl would die. The ending, I think, sort of changed my mind on that. But all said and done, solid 7/10. I won't read it again until sometime later, but I enjoyed a lot of it. VERY hard to put down.

From watching the talking Dead I have come to the conclusion that the live action show will end differently from the comic. Not sure if true but they did things surprisingly different; but from what I remember fans discussing on the Talking dead it could be argued the Live action is in some cases better than the comic. Point being is if you have not watched it Gavin you should. For yourself not the channel. I would love a vid comparing each season to its comic book counter part (when applicable); but I also realize the show has many seasons so it would be a major time sink. But I just want more fans for the show itself. I only reached Nigen barely so I know I am quite behind myself.
