I read the first 100 pages of The Way of Kings...

I just read the first 100 pages of "The Way of Kings" by Brandon Sanderson and I have some thoughts. This is my first dive into the The Stormlight Archive. I'll post weekly updates, so if you'd like to follow along hit that subscribe button.

Personally I would say most of the chapter is Jaznah's introduction, And we don't get introduced to Shallan At least the real shallan Tell the very end with the revelation that she is a thief. Everything we see before that from her is really a facade. To fit in with the sailors and to be someone who she hopes can become jasnah ward.

fun fact: Brandon has the rights to all of the cosmere adaptations and he's not giving them away unless he has creative control. So there's a good chance any adaptation will actually be good

Those pronunciations of Jasnah and Shallan made me cry.

Sanderson has said that he doesn't care how people pronounce the characters' names. He wants the reader to make it their own and pronounce things however they want.

​@fsdklfjlksdfjlkj makes sense since it's all fictional including their language which I think is alethi for the characters from that area the audiobook version uses irl accents and languages but again everyone speaks in the fictional languages of that world in the book unless sanderson himself gives correct canon pronunciations

@@Plut0kin Yeah, I'm not exactly sure how the pronunciations work, but Sanderson has also said that he writes the books as if he is translating their language to ours. He's giving the best approximation of what they are saying and doing in our own language (I think this applies most to diegetic things like poems, books, and songs.)

I too love books that just throw you in head first without any hand holding. The coolest thing about these books though is that it isn’t until later rereads that you can truly understand the implications and foreshadowing dripping off the pages. Good luck!

It's honestly so refreshing when it's a Fantasy book that just lets you jump in right in. Can't wait to get to that point where I can reread and appreciate the details I missed!

"I read the first 1,000 pages." So the whole book?🤣 I'm so stoked you're reading this now (and I'm always down to chat about it). I completely agree that just showing the spren being a part of the world with little explanation makes for better worldbuilding. I also agree that I loved Kaladin from the get-go but found Shallan kind of boring. Some of her scenes are great, but since her plot doesn't connect with the others, she tends to be viewed as the least interesting POV character in this book, and it doesn't help that Jasnah has a better character presence. However, Shallan does become way more awesome in the second book. I can't wait for you to get to the end of the book. One of my all-time favorite fantasy reading moments happens then.

Jasnah seems like a really interesting character. I can't wait to read more about her through the eyes of Shallan. lol. I'm looking forward to the ending and encountering a sanderlanche for the first time!
