I Read The Teen Titans YA Graphic Novels...

Figured I'd save some time by making this into a full review rather than a reaction! So today I break down each of the YA Teen Titans graphic novels written by Kami Garcia and drawn by Gabriel Picolo.

You could do so much with Beast Boy; his powers, personality, and backstory all mesh so beautifully together, when combined with Raven and her complicated past and character. You could make such an engrossing narrative, or at the very least, a humorous one. Oh well, maybe next time. 🤷‍♀

I honestly enjoyed these 3 and they’re so much better than anything ya dc has tried to do like ‘I’m not starfire’ and that ‘Gotham high’ one because like you said they’re well written

Piccolo's art is looking very subpar in these comics. What's a Shame because his work is generally pretty good.

You know, I thought it was interesting they hired a colorist for each of these books. Despite the color only existing in a few places (and not very cleverly integrated in). I think I would've actually preferred just black and white art at that point.

@@dannphan Wow, I didn't even notice it was colored! That's bizarre to hire a colorist to not color anything. By the way, Piccolo is one of those artist whose works look much better in color. This comic definitely doesn't appeal to his strenghts besides having superheroes in casual settings.

Not really. That's not how Piccolo drew Beasboy in all of the fan art he did for Teen Titans. But DC forced him to make Beast Boy look more like a regular human because teenage girls wouldn't like the way Beast Boy is actually supposed to look or some shit...

@@RambleOn07 It's not a self insert. DC forced Picolo to draw Beast Boy as a regular human boy. He previously drew Beast Boy accurately before DC told him he needs to make him look like a normie. So don't blame the artist for this shitty design, blame the company.

Theres so much fodder in these comics. Like the dyslexia sidequest is jammed in so haphazardly. (As the Robin book is doing two of the robins dirty and i hate it. Stop erasing Tim and Jason DC!)

I admire Gabriel's artwork. Too bad I can't get into the stories as I prefer the Titans to do more than just daily life stuff. Oh, and here's my top to bottom list: Raven > BB & R > Beast Boy. Beast Boy (Book #2) was boring and I just sped through just so I can read the third book.

I also am a long time fan of Picolo(shut up, I still chose to call him by his DA name!). But I feel like DC is holding him back. I really wish they'd give him the opportunity to make a comic about his OCs, Icarus and the Sun, cause those characters seem to have a really interesting concept/story behind them. But instead, they just make him to draw comics based on those illustrations he did of Teen Titans as hipsters, which really had no deeper concept behind them than just that: Teen Titans as hipsters.

We are now at a point where halfway decent art and bland and generic writing with low amount of "THE MESSAGE" is enough to be on top of the list.

I got the Raven book first a few years ago I didn't know the beast boy book was out till the year after it had come out in stores when I went to a bookstore and a lot of other people didn't know it was out either a lot of us read the first book and it was okay read a kind of upset that I wasted my money on it I thought it would be a bit better from what a few people told me but it was just kind of basic it was okay for the character in a normal setting like you said I like Raven living in a normal setting a lot of the stuff in the comic was okay I wish they had kept it closer to like maybe the cartoon versions of how Raven has her powers and how they were still do way other than adding on all that extra other stuff that just seemed okay but unnecessary and I doubt we'll see again I wish they had kept things that will be more consistent in the comic like how we see Slade and how all of these characters are going to end up linking upthe beast boy comic was okay I read it once maybe twice and then I just never read it again I didn't bother to buy it I just read it in the store while I was walking through looking for other books and then I put it back on the shelf nobody said anything to me about it and I'm glad I read it before I bought it because I just didn't really like the story with beast boy it seemed kind of just okay the next story after that were Raven and beastboy Meetup was a bit better than the beast Boy's story and a bit better than the raven story since it was bringing both characters together and both stories and it added on a bit more to it and built on their relationship better than I've seen a lot of other shows are books do nowadays if I had to rate this series as a whole it would be a 4/10 If I had to erase each book Raven 4/10 Beastboy 2/10 Beastboy and Raven 4/10 I hope that when they do the Robin book they change some things up or do some better things with the story the art for the story is good you can really tell that is from the same Creator who's been doing those modern teen Titans are but I think I like his art by itself better that looks better in the comic I don't know the art still looks the same but it's not as great to me I hope if they do robin cyborg and Starfire stories they do some better writing and storytelling with them like these stories with Raven and beastboy weren't bad but it felt like they took what could have been great stories and watered them down a bit too much

I liked the books, I do think the problems resolve too quickly, like the relationship between beast boy and his parents, which the book ignores the danger they are into, considering Slade is following the kids. Also the relationship between the characters develop to quickly, specially considering they both had romantic interests before. But I like the tone of the books, and that they give time for the titans to each be introduced. Im surprised they didnt include Tim Drake here, I think all the lore behind the Robins is kind of complicated to introduce the story, so I hope they dont focus too much on them, and let Beast boy and Raven take the spotlight. I have my hopes on the Starfire story.

On my one trip to the US so far (back in 2019), there was a meet-and-greet and signing with Garcia and Picolo at a mall in LA on the same day that I arrived in the city. I knew about the project already, because I quite liked Picolo's art on DA and because I was one of those teens back when the Teen Titans show originally ran who was a bit... Obsessed with Raven, and I quite liked the idea of the comic. The event was fun, and both Garcia and Picolo where friendly and nice, but the comic itself was mediocre, with the art being the best part. The story was just standard YA-material. Nothing offensively bad, but nothing special either. The following books just looked like more of the same, so I skipped them. I do wish Picolo well, because he is incredibly talented, bit I do wish he got to show it of with a more interesting project.

Thank you for the review! It's such a shame. I've always wanted a good BB+R love story with their weird and totally polar opposite personalities bouncing off each other, similar to certain moments in the cartoon series - too bad this is a watered down version, taking away a lot of what makes those two an interesting and cute couple.

I think your not understand the appiel of the books. Raven and beastboy are great superheroes but by having the story and way they dress being more lowkey, it allows the characters to be actual teenagers that’s why I liked it a lot back when I was around 17

I liked the artist I followed him so much but was so boring because he draws superheroes doing normal and boring thing, yeah sometimes that can be fun too and refreshing but it looked like he didn't really liked the characters I don't know

These books are more childish than the literal children's books published under the Golden Books label! I won't be surprised if DC loses money on the series, as by the time children becomes "young adults," i.e., the TARGET READERSHIP, they'll likely want what they're going through- puberty, first loves, survival in a high school's toxic environment, and all the confusion that brings- portrayed in a more mature manner, like that seen in Japanese manga.
