her name does mean "anonymous" or "nameless". throughout the entire song she references being nameless, a background character whom the world forgets, and if you notice the title of the song is "mumei", it isn't capitalized because it isn't her name, it's the word, "nameless". but in that last chorus, she says "i'll keep going, as Mumei", as a sort of hopeful acceptance of the way things are. it's a very melancholy song with an optimistic hopeful ending.

Random Mumei Fact: She wasn't a singer before Hololive. She's only now taking singing and acting lessons and is doing great. This song was sung by her at the annual Hololive concert in JP and she was really nervous because it was hard to sing/not having confidence and too much effect on her voice in the music video. But at the show the audience knew the difficulties of singing a song like that live and Mumei's effort. So in the middle of the show you can hear everyone shouting at her "You can do it, keep going" and the other side singing along with her. In Japan it is relatively rare for the audience to sing along because it is kind of disrespectful, but knowing that Mumei is not Japanese and wanting to help her, it was very magical and cute. She herself said this during a live stream after the show, when she was nervous but heard the audience talking and singing. She even let loose in the middle of the song. It's very clear. One of the reasons I love being part of this community. They really try their best and help each other out.

Fun Fact : Mumei did talking about what inspired the visual in this song is what her experience of loneliness in the past because she is quiet and reserved person so people around always see her as a shadow figure in the hoodie. As all the comments before me said her name mean Nameless Anonymous, in her lore she is Guardian of Civilization and live so long human and herself already forgot the name so this song is in a way tell her origin story.

Howdy! Time for lore Mumei chose her name herself as Anonymous (nanashi) Nameless (mumei) and theres quite a lot to it honestly! Mumei herself talked about it after this song came out, she was sometimes called by a teacher in school as "a shadow in a hoodie" kinda like she just blends into the background. Lore wise Mumei is the embodiment of a concept, Civilization, just like her opposite in her generation Fauna is the embodiment of mother nature, Sana embodied Space while Kronii was Time, Bae is literal Chaos while Irys is Hope. She has been around since the beginning of humanity and as such has forgotten more than anyone else has known, this is so she dosnt feel the pain of losing people anymore. So shes named her little friendly floating bag creature "Friend" and her pet "Animal" because as soon as she looks at them, instead of having to remember a name she will be like "Animal!". She has lived so long that she dosnt even have her own name, but this song is her saying "No im not Nameless, i am "Mumei" " Edit: After this song came out, one of her fans made a adventure platformer in this art style!

As many confirmed both Mumei's name and surname mean Nameless/anonymous. It's tied into her Lore, since she is the Guardian of civilization she has the knowledge of civilization ever to exist, inevitably the amount of knowledge and her longevity has made her forget stuff to the point of even forgetting her own name. Now onto the song, my favorite theory is that in it Mumei is at a point where a great civilization went extinct,(and that is why she travels around what seems to be ruins,) a civilization she forgot about, and now as the Guardian of civilization she is looking for something she forgot about, namely humans using her lantern(much like diogenes the cynic did)who create civilization, and as slowly humanity starts to reappear and progress Mumei comes closer to find what she was looking for until she finds it, and at that point she puts her lantern down, for she no longer needs it.

Mumei is actually a really great singer, but in a low-key way. She's not flashy like Elizabeth or Nerissa, but she has a wonderfully delicate voice that has a ton of expression. And if you like weird/creepy, Mumei is definitely your girl. Like Haachama, she has a very weird side to her that we love. She can come up with some disturbing stuff that's offset by her cuteness. Makes for an interesting combo.

This song caught a lot of people off-guard when it came out. Mumei is a beautiful singer, and along with the art direction it really resonated with fans. Mumei is a treasure, one of the single most adorable and terrifying characters in Promise. Mumei means nameless or anonymous, she doesn't remember her name. She has a bag companion named Friend and a pet named Animal, so... all names she doesn't have to remember, because she forgets things.

this is such a beautiful song. one of the really subtle things thats difficult to notice, is that if you pay attention to the lyrics written in the MV, in every verse except teh last, when calls her self Mumei, it translates them as 'nameless', but the very last one, instead of calling herself nameless, the english lyrics instead say 'I am Mumei'. it's her accepting it as her name, and no longer being nameless

A fan actually made a platformer game based on this music video that Mumei played on stream. The game is simply called mumei like the song. The first time in the songs that she says mumei, she's basically saying I have no name. The second is I am nameless, and the final time she says I am mumei is her acceptance of the name mumei.

The lyrics are actually dual in meaning, as they reflect both Mumei, the character, and Mumei the person behind the avatar. In terms of the character, Mumei is a physical concept of 'Civilization'. Basically as humanity gathers, forms communities, culture, etc, Mumei's personality and identity is filled in. As civilizations collapse, Mumei forgets and returns to a blank slate. That's why in the MV, at the start you just see a hooded figure with two eyes and no discernable features, and the lyrics actually use the word 'mumei' interchangeably -- at first as 'nameless', and then as her name, Mumei. In that same instance, she also gains a face and an identity again. From the vtuber side, Mumei conceived this song as representing her innate loneliness growing up (one thing she mentioned is that as a child she was described as a shadow in a hoodie, much like her depiction in the MV), as well as the fact that as a vtuber, she exists because of the fans. Without the Hoomans there can be no Nanashi Mumei, and thus it's both appreciation for them, and a somber acknowledgement of how fleeting an existence it can be to be a vtuber.
