Follow me along rearranging my closet and switching from summer to winter wardrobe. In Japan this is called "koromogae (衣替え)" and is traditionally done twice a year. This video will show you how I maintain and clean my kimono for koromogae.
In case you wonder how to clean a kimono properly, check out my kimono cleaning guide:
• How to Clean Kimono
Check out my friend’s kimono brand “Torie” on Instagram: toriekimono?utm...
Thank you so much for watching!!

I know this is a LOT to ask but would you consider doing Japanese subtitles? I would love to watch these with my girlfriend because we both love kimono an she has inherited lots of kimono and she loves wearing them, but she speaks mainly Japanese so she is more comfortable if there are Japanese subtitles. I know subtitles are a lot of work, so if not, that’s ok. We can always use your videos as english time. Either way, I love your videos and have learned so much. Thank you.

Catnip repels cockroaches. I make little sachets out of cheese cloth and put them in the dark hidden areas. You can also make a tea and wash your baseboards with it.

This was so satisfying and calming to watch! Historically, how many kimono, yukata, and juban would an average working-class woman own? As a video suggestion, I would love to see a "minimalist" or "capsule" kimono wardrobe!! I find the task of picking out coordinates overwhelming and keep my personal wardrobe limited to lessen the stress.

Thank you! There is the saying of “one kimono and three obi”, but I don’t know how accurate this is. It might be just a saying. Btw, a capsule wardrobe for kimono video is already on the list 😅😅 but I’m glad to see that this is something that would be watched on my channel 🧡

@@BillyMatsunaga I'm in northern Norway, so there's a lot of the wardrobe that stays available all year (I wear wool like ten or eleven months of the year, for example, because it's what I prefer unless it's actually summery outside), but things like winter boots and sandals definitely go into and out of storage.

watching you do your wardrobe switch from summer to winter made me think "I REALLY DON'T EVER WANT TO HAVE A LARGE KIMONO WARDROBE! AAARGH!" but then I quickly realized that its all that hard work only really twice a year, and the rest of it is arguably less work than doing a full lot of laundry twice a week and folding and putting it all away. so maybe Kimono life is less work in the end.
@ragnkja

In the vast majority of cultures' traditional dress, only the garments that go directly against the skin get washed frequently, while the rest are aired and spot-cleaned as needed. How many innermost garments you need depends on how often you can do laundry (and whether you prefer smaller loads more often or larger loads less often).

Hey, Billy, it’s so nice to finally watch a new video on your channel. I just realized that would like to see how do you manage with cooking and possibly what kind of food do you prepare. I’m so afraid for my kimono that don’t dare do anything while dressed. Also, you mentioned a kimono/ Obi maker from Osaka but I don’t see a link to their business. Do you mind reposting it please? So happy you little hedgehog! You definitely made my day 😍 👘

This was so lovely and relaxing to watch. I was wondering are most of your nagajuban silk? I received a silk nagajuban but it seems too delicate to wear casually. And my polyester koshimaki and hanjuban stick to the kimono and make it hard to walk. I wonder what to do. I also want to take kitsuke lessons but I wasn't sure of what is involved. Thank you for explaining about your lessons. It has given me the motivation to find a teacher when I move to Kyoto next year!

I have silk juban for my winter wardrobe and cotton/ramie for my summer wardrobe. Natural fibers for undergarments are a must for me. I don’t own a single polyester juban. And that’s my recommendation.

Hello Billy, quick question. I found a really pretty fabric I want to use for a Kimono but the fabric print runs in one direction. It is very subtle but if you turn it some elements are upside down. Now I was wondering if it would be better to have the "wrong" direction run down the back or rather down the front where it might get distracted by the front pieces and obi?
@BillyMatsunaga
@BillyMatsunaga 2 жыл бұрын
Make the wrong direction run down the back. There is a tailoring trick that is called “oidachi (追い裁ち)” you would use with such a fabric. I don’t know if you can find something about it on the internet, but I’ve talked about it in one of my older online workshops on my Patreon page. But it’s also not 100% necessary. So no worries 😊

I am curious about the sink you were cleaning your kimono in. The height and shallow depth look perfect for handwashing. Is it sized specifically for cleaning kimono? Is that common in Japan, or is it a special item? I am abroad, but I am thinking I might like that style of sink in my home. American laundry sinks are usually deep tubs that must be useful for some purposes, but handwashing is not among them. I always have to find bins to fill with water and carry to a countertop.
@BillyMatsunaga
@BillyMatsunaga 2 жыл бұрын
When we designed this house, I was specifically looking for a sink for kimono washing. And since I knew exactly what I needed (including measurements), this might look a sink designed for kimono cleaning, but it’s actually a laboratory sink. Lol So you will definitely find this everywhere, you will just have to take the time and look for it.
