There's a tabletop-fan-theory that GW are deliberately picking mediocre studios to make 40k games because they only want the games to be good enough for you to be interested in the franchise/property, but not good enough that you'd play the video games over the possibility of getting into the tabletop games. @Jorquay3 жыл бұрын
I think that’s exactly what he meant. He was referring to the game being unpolished, rough around the edges so to speak. Pig iron is the raw product of mixing iron ore and coke (no not that kind :) in a blast furnace. It results in a kind of iron called pig iron which was named because of the casts which were used which resembled piglets in a row. The iron has a high carbon content amongst other impurities hence the metaphor. It’s usually used as a raw product for the refinement of steel.

Muddy textures and some stiff character models in the hub area really don't mean much when 99% of the time you're grappling around, blowing shit up and lightning speed. You zip past most of the details. When you're actually playing, the sparks from industrial furnaces, weapon effects, level design zoom right past you and look great. What I really want is to see some non-human centric Warhammer and 40k games. Imagine a fantasy Chaos Warband simulator that played a fair bit like Brutal Legend did, where you start by creating your own champion and then assemble your warband through play. Eventually take your warband into multiplayer matches, maybe? How about a stealth action game where you play as a Skaven Nightrunner, or more of a straight up action game where you play as a Dark Elf Witch (or Dark Eldar Wych)? For 40k, imagine the possibilities of something like Inquisitor, but following the Ynnari. The possible character builds and branches, from Eldar Seer to Harlequin to Haemonculus, could be incredibly broad. And how much fun could a Far Cry like open world FPS game about an Ork Kommando be? GW has made such rich, incredibly complex worlds with their properties. That we're almost always stuck firmly in the Imperiums perspective is a damn shame.

One day there will be a great, well made warhammer game with an actual budget. I swear if a big company could pick up this property it would be fantastic. The world has so much to work with but the games are always made with tiny budgets by indie companies and feel like that doesn't fully give the titles what they deserve.
@lucasfranke51612 жыл бұрын
AAA studios with massive budgets would probably rather make their own IP, since there's no revenue share or big upfront payment (of course, there are exceptions like Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Harry Potter, LOTR, etc, but those universes are really really popular)

Certainly looks a lot better than necromunda: underhive wars, which was a massive disappointment. I still think there's a place for a proper turn-based necromunda game, but the interface in that one was a mess, and releasing with only three playable gangs was pitiful. Used to play necromunda on the tabletop, and the basic loop of creating your gang, learning to use their strengths and account for their weaknesses in the complex combat environments, and upgrading your best fighters to become combat gods was utterly compelling. No need to change any of the rules, just include all the tabletop rules and gangs, and the ability to create your own scenery and scenarios.

It really takes a while to get used to the abilities, but some of them are extremely powerful and in general the game doesn't quite work all that well without them. It flows so much better once you start using them somewhat appropriately, though of course, the game being as fast as it is and offering so many movement mechanics, does mean, that it can be hard to fit the abilities into the movement cycle. Still, in comparison to E.Y.E. - their first game - it's all very streamlined and well integrated. Rarity tiers add more damage and usually also more penetration to the guns. It makes a very substantial difference. The Archaeotechs add damage bonuses (Blaze +30 % vs light, Rad Phage +30 % vs armored, Static Charge +20 % vs Refractor Fields, Toxic increases Crits to 3x). They really should have added that in the descriptions. Edit: In case you are wondering why I post this now: Well, after playing it on and off for about a year, I'm somehow still returning to it. Partially because of how fun the combat is, partially how bad I'm still at it and partially since the weapons customization is great. Not that balanced, but it definitely offers a good amount of depth.

This game is suffering from horrible frame rate drops janky animation and a whole host of crashes. You still recommended it. Biomutant runs well, plays well, and you shafted it cause of sound issues and not your brand of combat. You like shooters. And you like to think shooters with a certain thematic feel are worthwhile compared to others. Why would any company give you a copy of their game? Your reviews aren't game reviews, they are opinion pieces on what you feel is a good game compared to a bad game. There isn't actually any logic or reason behind them. Your goal post move depending on how you feel about the genre you are playing. I have a feeling a good amount of your fans are young and impressionable. Not a problem but somebody older recommended you to me, going to have to remedy that.
@thorn05163 жыл бұрын
An opinion piece on what someone did and didn't like about something is the definition of a review
@reubenalexander75753 жыл бұрын
@@thorn0516 Actually no, it isn't. A review or a professional review is supposed to be an examination of a product on its merits within a genre. For example, If I write for a food blog and I am talking about the nutritional value of food. I can't just write "Cookies are great everybody should have them as a daily part of a healthy diet". That would be an opinion. I have to examine the nutritional factors that make a cookie worthy of being part of a healthy diet. An op ad or an opinion piece just speaks about what I like and dislike about cookies and I how personally feel a cookie should fit into one's diet. Skill Up does opinion pieces as his standards for what makes a game good or bad waver depending on the genre and atmosphere of the presentation. If a shooter is janky like Outriders or Necromunda he will overlook and even soften the realities of those drawbacks. If the game on the other hand is open-world like Biomutant or Asscreed, those detractions become vital reasons why he can't recommend the game. His professionalism disappears depending on the game he plays and how he enjoys it. He doesn't rate each game on a standard set of best practices. If Skill Up likes it or not, is the only justification for whether something is good or bad. I can't trust that, it's how a young or immature creator rates things. How can I discover anything new if he can't put aside his personal bias or taste and rate something on its merits? That is my opinion, for many others Skill Up is perfect, but I want a game reviewer, not an opinion editor. Skills Up's professionalism extends to his writing and oratorical skills, which are top-notch. He is enjoyable to listen to and has a well-manicured delivery. Beyond that, I can't say I take what he says seriously. Skill Up's opinion isn't enough to be a balanced review because he isn't an authority on gaming. For example, developers like Shigeru Miyamoto or Yuji Naka who defined gaming genres are authorities on the art of game making. He neither makes games from my knowledge nor produces content for game creation. Being a talented writer and orator does not make you an expert in any field beyond communications. I won't say he doesn't have a right to his opinion, nor an audience willing to adhere to it. He just isn't for somebody like me who wants an actual breakdown of a video game on merits.
@thorn05163 жыл бұрын
Those "merits" are all based on personal opinion. There is no objective measure of quality of a piece of art. In your analogy, the nutritional facts of the cookie are objective (the technical problems with the game), but makes no point about the taste or quality of the cookie, which is complete opinion. For all your philosophizing your point basically boils down to "I don't agree with his opinion". Which is fine, you can find a different reviewer who's opinions align more with yours. But that doesn't make his take less "objective" then anyone else's.
@reubenalexander75753 жыл бұрын
@@thorn0516 I think you missed my point. In my cookie analogy, I purposely made the example an opinion. I admit off the bat the examination was that of an opinion. If I was going to examine whether a cookie is nutritionally sound for a healthy diet I would have quoted experts in nutrition. That is the point of my example. Best practices are not opinions. If a doctor examines their patient's weight and blood pressure they are examining their health. If their patient is obese and their blood pressure is through the roof and they ask. "What have you been eating"? And the patient's response is "Cookies". The doctor, who is a healthcare professional, will inquire why? If the patient says "Reuben Alexander told me they were good". The doctor who has gone to school and earned a diploma in biology and medicine as an expert can say I am a quack and my advice is foolish. At no time did I state I was a nutritionist, my words are opinions. A doctor's words are fact or should be fact-based. The doctor has studied with academia and associations that set the guidelines for what is healthy and what is not. If I am not following their guidelines, my words are conjecture and opinion, not a review. Nutritional facts of a cookie are not subjective, certain foods are good for your health and certain foods are bad for your health. Whether you like a cookie or not is an opinion. The same goes for Skill Up, he has no expertise in game making. So if he doesn't follow his own logic on how he rates games, his game reviews are not reviews they are opinions. He follows no guidelines, and he is not a trained expert in game making. My point isn't that I don't agree with his opinion. My point is that he only gives opinions and does not review games. He isn't even hiding it, Necromunda is janky recommended. Biomutant is janky, not recommended. What changed? Both games are janky by his own admission, all that changed was Skill Up likes one game style and not the other. There are no other guidelines to his logic that he explains, follows, or details. He gives his opinion based on no other system beyond his internal bias. Compare this to let's say other organizations that have review panels and guidelines. In the U.S. the Food and Drug administration sets up clear guidelines on acceptable nutritional standards. They can't turn something down just because they don't like it. Let's say you want to stay within the realm of gaming, the ESRB is literally the rating board that sets the standards for consumer video games. They are self-regulating no different than Skill UP and they have to abide by their own bylaws. The ESRB can't just deny a game a rating cause they don't like it. They set their standards and adhere to them. Skill Up does none of that. Skill Up's pseudo-reviews are just the whims of his opinions, there is no standardized process that he adheres to. He doesn't adhere to his own criteria for what is a good or bad game beyond his personal likes. This is a problem for many reviewers in the video-game sphere. But defending his opinions as reviews and saying all reviews are opinions because it is art, is just factually wrong because review boards and their guidelines exist from games to government. You most definitely can set up guidelines to judge art. Skill UP even points to these organizations when he mentions the Last of us 2. BAFTA the British Academy of Film and Television Arts has guidelines. For Example. " ANIMATION For the highest level of excellence in bringing a game to life. This award considers all elements of animation: including but not limited to player control, non-player characters, ambient/environmental animation, facial animation and cinematics. This category will also consider the style, fluidity and responsiveness of the characters." That is from BAFTA's guidelines on how it judges competitive categories in Video games. I don't know what else to say, it's cool if you like Skill Up, he has a consistent well-polished delivery. His content just isn't based on a clear basis of reviewing a product without his personal bias.
