I Recreated A Luxury Techwear Jacket On a Budget | DIY Gradient Dye

Using a £9.99 eBay jacket by Merrell I attempt to recreate the iconic look of the gradient-dyed Acronym x Nemen J28-K jackets, which today cost between $2000 and $3000, using easily-available materials. Hope you like the result!

There's a lot of Tutorials out there on Ombre dyeing, one tip I can give is to do what you mentioned--dip only the darkest part, and then put more of the item in the dye as time goes along, that way the dye will both be weaker/dye less and then you'll have less time spent in the dye. you can also accordion fold the jacket rather than crumpling it in for a more even dye effect, etc. I love tie-dying items and dyeing items for a more desaturated look(I have a lot of clothes I've done this too) and there's also other dyes besides RIT that can be more vibrant.

I've never used RIT color remover but I think you could make some cool looks by subtracting color rather than adding

A different color, or even more green would be sweet. Have you considered ice-dying methods? another fairly simple way to add color to a piece. Cropping a jacket is pretty daunting, primarily because it's difficult to reverse. Perhaps as a "final boss" type of modification? Adding a jacket sling, or other functional "upgrades" seem like great options: -Could we modify the hood to be a bit better? Structure, shade? -Could we add an internal pocket, for a phone/wallet?

i mean if you've never dyed anything before and you're trying to make a super epic gradient, you can't expect it to go perfectly on the first try - those are tricky. still ended up with a nice color jacket for cheap so i'd say it was a success

Hello!! I'm a gas mechanic and the company I work for, well, they kind of suck when it comes to providing gear. Im looking for FR rated gear. Preferably things like functional cover alls. I wouldbt mind investing in a couple peices I can wear on and off the job. It's kind of away from the typical hiker inclement weather rain resistant stuff, maybe even totally opposite as I need some fire resistant... But I think it's something cool and interesting to look into as you are probably someone who would hear about brands or projects that would be inovating with this kind of stuff.

You might also want to consider the opposite approach: bleaching a darker garment. An art channel called Jazza tried painting with bleach on t-shirts a little while back, with some interesting results.

You should buy a aluminum baking tray and those outdoor cooker can things for the next project leaving the entire jacket submerged and keeping the section you want out and a more even dyeing process

If you wet the jacket before putting it in the dye it would help the gradient spread more evenly and it will bleed throughout the fabric

I dyed my own jacket a while back taking it from olive drab to a dark green gray. I was wondering if anyone's doing complete diy tech ware? Getting patterns and fabric and making their own stuff?

You might want to look into Synthrapol in order to remove factory sizing from clothes before dying. Factory sizing on any type of clothing (synthetic or not) will block any external dyes to an extent. Moreover, if you are dying synthetics, you might want to find an acid based dye so it’ll take better.

To get the gradient effect a little better do the opposite of what you did. put the bottom of the jacket in first then as time goes on lower the jacket more and more.

Potentially yes ! The annoying trade-off is the wider the surface area the faster the dye will cool down. Not sure how much that'd affect the final look
