I like how accurate the redesigns are to the vibe of the original. I watched another video like this once and while the redesigns weren’t awful, some of them seemed to completely miss the point of the original in favor of showing off character design techniques, like giving a character who seemed a little closed off a full on villain makeover to show off triangle shapes. This feels a lot more personal.

yes!!! i am so thankful that the original characters' themes and personality weren't completely disregarded (and were instead embraced and utilized in the redesigns), i think that's something very important to keep in mind when redesigning characters that aren't your own

Mate absolutely love this format, it's so wholesome and welcoming. Rather than simple tips and transforming it to your personal style, you've have met artist where they are at and simply highlighted the small things they have overlooked. The eye contact between characters is such a good one, I don't often draw multiple characters at once myself and never considered how eye contact can reveal so much about their relationship.

Really awesome format for an art critique & character design class all in one, definitely the best I've seen so far! I love the idea of drawing a faithful version & an in-your-style version, as that not only shows you how to improve on & fix any mistakes, but also how to extrapolate that information into your own thing entirely. The thought process of character desing principals and redesign choices for the changes you would make in your own version are also very much appreciated. Super respectful of the artists' work too. Awesome video, Brookes, I really like when you do videos like this!! I like to reinterpret characters for fun, too. It really highlights the artistic individuality between yourself and the original artist, especially when comparing what you both prioritize in terms of style and such. I have this thing where I will sometimes spend up to four or so hours on a sketch, I feel somewhat indecisive on whether or not i should keep going, and recently it’s paid off, I didn’t realize that I didn’t have a character yet and it seemed like an average skeleton to what it is now, but even still I don’t know if I should start inking or not… My character is this giant fisherman, walking through a forest with a huge net of fish if you were curious
