A great read. Honestly, i really like how unexpectable the structure is, even if some might argue that isnt that much of a good idea on a literary standpoint.

Very interesting to get your thoughts after rereading this classic. I just revisited it myself recently and I understand your criticisms but I also think a lot of that is why the novel works so well. It's a very acute portrait of a confused young man and while the reader doesn't have to agree with or subscribe to that point of view, it is still a fascinating and provocative perspective to consider. It was great to hear the parts that stood out to you that you had forgotten. I had a similar experience and just hearing you describe them brought me back. I also appreciate you pointing out that the translator inevitably has an effect on a text. Sometimes I wonder why Mishima didn't translate his own work since he spoke English himself. I really enjoyed your review and I am now a subscriber! Looking forward to checking out your channel!

What exactly is misogynistic in this book? I don’t remember misogyny

I didn’t remember the misogyny either, but then I reread the passage about joan of arc, and about the female cousin, and then all the manipulation of Sonoko, etc…

@@ABooktubeChannel I agree. Proclaiming himself a "conqueror" when he learned about Sonoku's wish to marry him shows that he only saw her has an object to be manipulated. He was elated that his manipulations were successful. He didn't value her as a person, only as a part of his "mask".

@@Vic-mc6tb @ABooktubeChannel If you pay attention to the way he talks about his constant tendency to manipulate the truth and his choices, you can see that he didn't believe himself to be a 'conqueror', In fact he calls himself a coward for not being able to face the truth and face Sonoko. He just chooses to believe that he is this master manipulator to justify to himself why he doesn't fully commit to Sonoko (rather than admitting to himself that he is attracted to men) If anything he has this higher perception of Sonoko because of her ability to be true to who she is. And when it comes to the Joan of Arc story, in my eyes that was his way of illustrating how it was the idea of men that affected him and not so much the reality of whether it was a woman or man in that picture. He was sexually attracted to men and that is not an insult to women. For context, I am a woman.
