Avatar: The Last Airbender is my favorite show that I love to come back to time and time again. However, I feel the aspect ratio leaves a lot to be desired. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and try to remaster a handful of scenes from the pilot episode of this magnificent show.
Hope you enjoy!

This makes me realize that 'remastering' 4:3 animation could be a great exercise for beginner animators. It works as a study, as you're constantly referencing the existing animation, and you can focus on practicing animating motion itself without needing to create entire scenes from scratch.

I THOUGHT THAT AS WELL!! so glad he went the extra mile to add his own flare and not ruin the borders with inconsistent AI slop :] (To clarify, i don't think AI is yet able to properly expand the aspect ratio of cartoon shows without it looking out of place, and considering the characters have a lot of frames that have a portion of their body/accessories/items out of shot, plus the animated spots here and there, the AI would have to know how to animate them, it wouldn't work that well without the assistance of an animator or artist.)

As a film student I can't imagine Avatar in any other aspect ratio. The 4:3 creates a certain nostalgic tone that makes the show so much more lovable for me.
@DarkDoughnutsVids
@DarkDoughnutsVids 19 күн бұрын
That makes sense. Like how some film students act like black and white films are artistic and special when the only reason their black and white is because that was the only technology the directors had at the time The REAL reason why they put BnW films on a pedestal is because of nostalgia
@jickamangah
@jickamangah 18 күн бұрын
@@DarkDoughnutsVids But that's exactly it. The fact that black and white was a technological limitation is exactly why it is now an artistic choice. The Wizard of Oz is a perfect example. They used the transition between black and white and color photography to convey a "new universe" feeling. Now black and white is used to convey a certain nostalgic mood or a sense of film noir. When used correctly it's exactly like how an animated movie like Toy Story 4 will intentionally put in lens defects. We're playing with the language of cinema.

I think the 4:3 is def part of the charm for me, it's reflective of the time period it came out in. I also feel like ATLA is very good at visual storytelling and utilized its framing and composition very purposefully. The idea of what aspect ratio a video "should" be is silly cuz it's all made up! the issue i have with this is that the framing of scenes was made for the old aspect ratio. Characters where originally positioned at 2/3 but they are now not at the same position. The only exception is when they are right in the middle. You could however account for that by making sure that you position the focus object where it would be.

@@turtlogra9709Theyre referring to how Korra’s show was messed with by the network (Nickelodeon,) who were inconsistent with how much creative freedom, time, and certainty the showrunners would have. When Mike and Bryan said they wanted the protagonist to be a girl, Nick got real obtuse and suddenly had less faith in the show (as if Atla was successful for being a “boy show.”🙄 ) Instead of giving the crew a guaranteed three seasons of 20 episodes, they promised them a single, short season, and said the show could continue if it was successful. This is why it had such a forced happy ending- they didn’t know if they’d be able to continue. Same for why Korra’s character arc feels kinda reset in season 2. Nick did stuff like this throughout the show’s production. If the showrunners were able to make it without these problems, it wouldn’t have as many writing problems.

This is really well done! It intrigues me that despite matching almost perfectly, it still feels like it was supposed to be 4:3 due to the posing and placing of characters and objects. It's truly a testament to the original show that they managed to place everything so purposefully in what now feels like a limiting aspect ratio.

This was absolutely fire to watch! During the Covid era when I was unemployed for a few months I made two Kirby Right Back at Ya "Remastered" episodes which for the most part was just putting the Japanese OST over the Kirby dub (with some exceptions of keeping some dub songs in, or even adding some Kirby game music, based on my personal discretion ) But this definitely inspired me to look at going a whole new way about the "remastered" aspect if I ever get free time again like I did back then. Especially now that Kirby Right Back at Ya has had a blu-ray release in Japan since my making of those episodes, episodes in their best possible quality now exist that didn't at the time (...If I can find a re-selling of the Blu-Rays or if they go up again, I think it was a limited release) But somehow stumbling upon this in my recommended videos was absolutely a blast to see as a big fan of Avatar, as well as someone who has worked on "remastering" episodes of old animation. Your methods were awesome, although it seemed extremely time consuming I'd love to see you possibly the episode 1 or get a team together, since it seems like so much for one person to take on, on their own!

Anyway i really enjoyed the video and hope to see more art and animation stuff from u in the future (also a tip for these u can kinda like make them look more dirty like the original cus old shows look a bit dirty so just putting a layer of noise or something can help it blend a bit better)

This is pretty brilliant. I think, in reality, the original composition being conceived with the 4:3 aspect ratio in mind, there's never going to be any important things happening at the far sides of the screen, so you can get away with mistakes, it just kind of dissolved into your peripheral vision. I maintain the only thing the show needs to be brought up to younger audiences is the wide screen formatting, not live-action or a remake.

this is really good! i've briefly thought of doing this kind of thing before, but always thought it would be WAY too hard! although i can imagine some more action-packed scenes where stuff like hands and body parts go off screen could be really hard, though (probably a bigger issue in book 2 and book 3) i would also suggest adding in new things off-screen, because in a couple of scenes the sides end up looking a bit empty. but still overall, if i forgot the show was in 4:3 and i looked at your animations in something like a video essay, i wouldn't bat an eye!

This is amazing! Can't wait for 10 years time where you have to go back and expand the screen ratio to be even wider lol!

Thank you for doing this, I thought about a remaster of ATLA after my last rewatch and was also thinking I could maybe try something as an excercise.

INCREDIBLE!!!!!! Excellent work, i really hope this becomes a reality for the whole show someday. I grew up with it and i still think it'd benefit from 16:9. You are very talented.

This looks amazing!! For someone going into this with no animation eperoence you picked it up pretty fast! Water animation is natorious for being a pain for animators (especially 3D) and you did good expanding on those areas. Also, if you want to see the episodes fully recreated, I'd suggesting lookikg into Multi Animator/Editor projects. Making a call to remaster episode 1 this way would be bound to bring about a large crowd. I know I'd be down to editing a few shots and I'm sure many other artists, animators, and fans of the show looking to challenge themselves like you did would be interested.

I was so worried when you prefaced it with saying "I'm not an artist" that it was gonna be AI or something, but your art looks so good you definitely are an artist!!

Love the idea, very fun exercise! BUT, I do feel that there is something lost here. The fact is that the original creators worked within the 4:3 format so it was all purposefully framed as such, so the 16:9 “versions” feel more empty. Again, not to take away from your work at all, very good job and I loved the video!

Omg I just finished rewatching the animated series two days ago and had the same feelings. I would never go for a cropped avatar, and you do have the option on a phone or tablet to zoom in, but like you, and like South Park did for their early seasons, I want the frames to be animated out, not cropped. There’s just so many problems with pan & scan, especially with animation, where it’s possible to actually animate more picture. I hope Avatar Studios take this on board and give us the authentic widescreen remaster!

Well done, I admire the skill and time you took to extend those frames. One thing that surprised me was at 3:48, it looks like you tried to track the bone on the boat by eyeballing it frame by frame (and later at 4:39 you'd set key frames). I dont know what software you use or what capabilities it has, but in Nuke or After Effects, there is a "tracker" feature that would have easily copied the x and y movement of that bone, and then you could stick that data on a still frame of the bone, so it would perfectly mimic even the weird jitters. Im guessing your software doesnt have a tracker feature, which is unfortunate cuz that would've saved you so much time. Well done on your hard work and I hope your channel flourishes!

By doing this, you're already putting more love and care into the Avatar universe than Netflix did.

Tell that to the VFX artists who worked on the Netflix show.... Can we stop saying stupid things like this? You can complement one person's work without shitting all over someone else's.

@@thewatcher7940 I enjoyed the channel owner's work, and I'm angry at Netflix - so that's what I said, no more, no less. Somehow, you've concluded that I targeted the VFX artists. I didn't, and never will - I know what it's like working alongside those guys, so get off your soap box and stop getting offended on someone else's behalf when they didn't ask you to. Very presumptuous of you.
