Күн бұрын

COVID-19 is now the deadliest pandemic in the history of the United States. More than 678,000 Americans have died from the virus, surpassing the number that died from the 1918 flu. Kathryn Sherman has seen the story unfold in front of her eyes, working as a critical care nurse in Tennessee -- the state with the most COVID-19 cases per capita. In a piece for The Scientific American, Sherman wrote that “the patients don’t stop coming.” She speaks with Hari Sreenivasan about her experience caring for the sickest coronavirus patients.

I have been a nurse over 42 years and I remembered that young and vibrant self and that nursing spirit and that spirit remained there until about a few years ago when nurses started to leave the field, nursing shortages, less support from the administration and then covid hit… wow I never thought that I would be so affected by this epidemic but after 18 months of this and the continuing difficulty of finding staff and the general public acting like nothing is wrong has taken a toll … thank god that there are nurses like you and make sure that you take time for yourself because nursing has always been challenging and at your age retirement seems so far away.

The antivaxxers should be the ones turned away or staying home now to die. Different in the beginning with no vaccine we were all so vulnerable. Now we can be protected by vaccination or if we do get Covid we have a better chance to not be severely ill. Bless them all.

The Republican cult members, most in the South, but also in rural Idaho and other sparsely populated counties in that area, don't believe in Covid or the vaccine thanks to Trump and probably Fox. My wife is also a registered nurse and I can verify much of what this young woman is saying. What irritates her most are all the COVID denying, anti-vaccine, anti-maskers who cause our medical professionals and healthcare system so much unnecessary and undue stress. My wife, who works 12 hour shifts, only has three days off in September and often comes home from the hospital both physically and mentally exhausted. That's bad enough, but she sometimes has to endure verbal abuse and criticism from ill-informed members of the community. It's no surprise that many nurses are leaving the profession.

After 40 years there is still nothing I would rather do and if I was younger and in better health I would be all in this fight. When she said she remembered them all......believe her. The sadness can be so hard....knowing that almost none of them had to die if only they had been vaccinated. Free. Easily available. Safe and 95% effective. I am a retired critical care RN. I have lost 4 coworkers to Covid. The first 2 were advanced practice RNs in the ICU. They died due to inadequate PPE. The last 2 , one was vaccinated, but had just gotten her second shot. She went to a family members birthday party. She was dead in 10 days as well as other family members. The last was unvaccinated because he was on home health. He caught it probably from his nurse. Unknown. Stay safe. Stay strong. Know we in the vast nursing community are praying for you. No one is mentioning the MU variant. It is in every state. There is no vaccine. There is no immunity after catching it. No monoclonal antibodies. I worry more being out in the community. I live in TX. I wear 2 masks always.

Kathryn, may God give you strength and help you and your co-workers keep going. I am a retired nurse who started my career in the early 80's with the AIDS pandemic and worked in oncology. There will be patients you will never forget and the sorrow and stress of caring for such extremely ill patients takes a toll. Please take care of yourself, after 36yrs of nursing I hit the wall and was totally burnt out, you must take care of yourself. Remember how important your work is, you are right some nurses are in it for a job, while some of us felt it was a calling. I always felt so horrible if I had a patient I could not get comfortable or their suffering was so heartrending, I often cried the whole way home too many days. That is why it is so important to have support and take care of yourself. Thanks to you and all the health care workers struggling though this horrible pandemic. Please, everyone, please get vaccinated, you may well save your life or the lives of others.

Somehow there has to be a way to teach people how to follow the path to the most likely source of correct, rational information. In this case, medical information. But it can go into other areas of science such as climate change, and non scientific fields such as politics.

The problem is, the public has lost trust in the media, and for good reason. I look at this piece and I think it is not impossible that it could be faked or at least some of it could be displayed in a partisan manner. However when it comes to the pandemic, there are medical and data websites which do not depend on some particular audience for support, hence, they are reliable. When it comes to politics, I do not have a ready answer.

Young new nurses working in Covid units are getting a lifetime of experience in a short time and the trauma for them will last a lifetime as well. Great interview & amazing nurse. Last week I needed a blood transfusion in the outpatient clinic. I was talking to the nurse & she said she used to work in the ER at a different location but transferred to this clinic during the first wave. Keep in mind she has been a nurse for 25 yrs, worked through ebola & SARS and this is how stressful it was for her in Canada, near Toronto. It would 100x worse in other places with now rules.
