My iPad mini w/cellular (and pencil) is my primary device which does 80% of what I need to get done. Everything else is for my iPhone 13 mini. Its a perfect combination that can truly enhance the user experience.

I have this exact setup and I’m so happy! I “downgraded” most will say but to me I UPGRADED from an iPhone 14 pro max and 12.9in iPad Pro to the iPhone 13 mini and iPad mini 6 and I’m beyond happier with this combo!! And also I have an Apple Watch SE 1 which I use for fitness, etc. just cool to know there’s someone else out there with this amazing combination of tech!

I also have this combination. Add a Planck keyboard and it’s pretty much ergonomic perfection. I know: totally counterintuitive that a smaller set up would be, but I realise it’s because handspan and eyespan actually have their limits, and they don’t have to be stretched.

Long-time Samsung user, but got the iPad Mini 6 (just demolishes all Android tablets), so now that my phone is over 4 years old I was considering the iPhone Mini 13 because of its size and compatibility with the Mini 6, but I'm unsure how well it combines with a Windows laptop. It's basically either this or the S23 which ignores the iPad but is more functional with Windows

I am a ipadmini user since its first release in 2013. Changed to Ipadmini 5 March 2020 and now just waiting for the Ipadmini 7. I bring it everywhere. My wife also had it in 2013 (sold it after 2 years) and then she went down the Iphone 6 to Xs to 13 Pro Max now with an IpadAir. She sold the Ipad Air and now waiting for the Ipadmini7 also. IPads/Air are just too big to lug around. We have dozens of Ipad Pros at the hospital though.

I replaced my heavy DSLRs, desktop PCs and Macs, 17-incher gaming notebooks, iPad Pros, 21-inchers pen displays and touch screen monitors with only three devices: M2 MacBook Air, iPad Mini 6 (with Apple pencil) and iPhone. Now, I'm always on the go and travelling with these gadgets. I'm in my middle seventies and never looked back.

The ipad Mini is the first device I grab in the morning. So comfortable to hold and read my notifications I would have gotten on my iphone. Reading news/articles or watching a few videos while eating breakfast and drinking a morning coffee at the table. Anytime I would have grabbed my iPhone, I grab my iPad Mini instead. The weird aspect ratio of the Mini 6's screen is surprisingly okay for videos in landscape mode, and scrolling through reddit in portrait mode.

I use my iPad Mini for most everything I do, except for phone. I’m retired and not a power user by any measure, so it’s really pretty good as a laptop replacement. iCloud makes my files accessible on my MacBook, if I want to do more serious editing or printing. I do very little phoning - I prefer text or email - so I only use my iPhone when I’m out and about. Otherwise, the Mini is just about perfect (or at least adequate) for so many things, it would be the one piece of tech I would choose if I could only have one. I hope Apple keeps on supporting the Mini and bringing out new editions. They have a real winner in this product.

The iPad mini has been my favorite device in the last few months. I use it all the time. When I don't have my laptop and need to do basic document editing it is more than capable. It's small enough as a media consumption device that it doesn't feel heavy or big when Im in bed watching my favorite series. I even use it as my infotainment/navigation device for my car. It's small enough that I can place it along side my car's actual infotainment which I still need because of the reverse cam. I hope they don't discontinue the mini lineup. I love both my 12 mini and iPad mini.

Phone & tablet size has disproportionately risen lately when they were always originally intended to be small, the iPhone mini 13 & the iPad mini 6 are the perfect combination of fully functioning lightweight powerful products in a compact portable format, expensive yes but totally unique & niche. I always buy the cellular version of ipads, yes it increases the initial purchase price but the convenience of cellular especially when travelling is worth it, so easy to pop in a prepaid data sim or activating the esim for connectivity is a bonus I don’t understand why some people limit themselves to just wifi.

I'm a samsung kinda guy. I use an A71 phone. Great phone, great cameras, as a construction foreman I love that I can walk through a building site checking items off on an excel spreadsheet, taking notes, sending and recieving emails and phone calls. Eventually I end up back at my office space on site where I have my galaxy A8 tablet with a logitech Bluetooth keyboard and mouse setup. Thanks to Onedrive & smartswitch, everything I did on my phone is now also on my tablet and vica versa. Loving my setup, it does everything I need it to do, no need for a laptop. I did it all with just the phone before but I found it nice to have 2 screens when I'm back at my office. Cheers

A lot of us do this with our foldables. The Z Fold 4 or not 5, its a phone that turns into a tablet and you also get Samsung Dex so you get a full desktop experience when attaching a screen. A truly all in one device, with really high end specs. And an actual 120ghz amoled display. I really wish Apple would release higher end hardware, because I would LOVE to buy a 120hz amoled ipad mini.

The one thing I really envy Samsung users for is dex. Having a little dock where you place your phone and it turns into a desktop like experience is brilliant. I use an iPad Pro as a computer replacement, so I carry an iPhone and iPad but being able to even drop the iPad and have the large phone and dex like option would be even greater. As for if folding phones are the future. I don’t think so. I think they are cool ideas, but when I tested the galaxy fold I hated the crease in the middle and the flimsy feel of the screen. Also a hinge is just another thing that will break. I think by the time folder phones get really good, AR will be picking up speed. As soon as they get that in a normal looking glasses we will all be using those. Then the world is your screen and we won’t care about size and stuff. I’m just hoping they figure out how to make them the computer too. Imaging just sitting down, pulling out a keyboard or something and doing work. Where your available screen space is 365 degrees in all directions up down and all around. Then when your done you kick back throw on a move and enjoy. Then it’s time to go and now your mobile and getting messages and alerts as you go on the glasses. I think that’s the future and the devices now including foldable are something to keep us interested until that future is here.

Yeah , dex is handy mate , although i must confess i rarely use it now , Im old and i dont get out much , when it first came out with the galaxy S8 series , i bought the phone and dock , and about the same time my PC carked it , so i thought i will give dex ago , which back then was very new and somewhat unrefined and a little buggy , but still very workable with the odd work around , and dex became my home computer for the next 1.5 years , and for general duties even then on a phone with 4 Gb of ram , it was actually pretty darn good , i supplemented it with Multi USB hub and had wired mouse , wired keyboard , and i ran android , as well as chrome , and i could have about ten tabs open from memory , and all the while it was in the dock it was charging the phone , i also had a choice of using BT speakers , wired external speakers or the monitor speakers , or i could use the speaker on the phone which surprisingly was quiet loud because the fan vent in the dock that also kept the phone cool directed the sound from the single bottom speaker upwards , i dont know if that was by design from samsung or fluke :) , but it was not bad at all . I actually grew to prefer dex over my PC , because i could use my phone out and about all day accumulating data , photos , video , ,etc , and when i got home i put it in the dock and 20 seconds later everything on my phone was up on my 27 inch monitor ready to go , and it played youtube , did general computing ok ( within reason , you wouldnt go video editing on an old phone ) . Yes dex is handy , even if it is just in reserve for when you need it , i dont know if sammy still has the puck foldable dock , but i thought that was very cool indeed .

My phone broke and I've had to main my iPad 10.2" alongside a feature phone. The iPad is just too cumbersome to carry around everywhere. You need to carry it in a bag, it's uncomfortable to hold in bed. However, the battery life is really good I also used to use the iPad as my main laptop (2021). Here are the biggest issues - no NTFS support (I can't use flash drives that were formatted for Windows) - most apps don't have good keyboard shortcuts (makes you work slower) - at the time Lumafusion was the only editor and it wasn't advanced enough for my needs (I managed to get my gaming channel to 1000 subscribers though) - Microsoft office *SUCKS* - stage manager didn't exist so I spent lots of time swapping between apps and waiting for them to reload - the way iPad handles audio sucks (e.g. it will mute music if I scroll past an Instagram post that has sound)

Haven’t owned a phone in a year now, just an iPad Mini 6, a Macbook and a sim card. Here in Thailand, I take calls on earbuds with Line or Messenger. The only downside is I have to constantly carry a small backpack for it. Universal control is a great feature to connect usb mice and keyboards. It’s still in need of some development, but Apple has made my iPad and laptop work rather seamlessly together.

I have an older model iPad Mini and love it. I use it daily as a second screen for my laptop at home, and it goes everywhere with me. It fits nicely in a mid-size purse / bag, and doubles as an on-the-go workspace. This is the second Mini I’ve owned and I have found it to be the most versatile model in the Apple lineup.

I have used a standard iPad in the role w/ Zoom Voice. Works pretty good if it;s your work #. I prefer to go in the opposite direction, though. I have a Watch, Phone, iPad Mini, iPad Pro, and MBA. The Watch is my main device for alerts, quick calls, etc. My phone [14 Pro] serves primarily as a camera and the device I need to link everything together from my cell carrier. The iPad Mini goes everywhere with me as my digital notebook. My iPad Pro and MBA are my primary productivity devices, and I love being able to use them to create a wireless dual monitor setup anywhere. The high-end camera capability, to me, is the main thing that prevents us from moving away from "smart phones"- everything else is duplicated on multiple other devices. The biggest thing to me is that each device in your personal tech stack needs to both contribute it's own specific functionality, while also being additive to the other devices. A cellular Surface Pro can give you calling, tablet functionality, handwriting, and a full OS / laptop experience, and for a long time, I thought that convergence was exactly what I wanted. Then, Apple came out with Sidecar and Universal Control for Mac and iPad, and suddenly thee was a reason to have both devices on you- dual-screen on the fly. I think that, with damn near everything having a cellular antenna these days, that the "phone" is the least necessary component, but it's also hard to replace because of the camera aspect. What I'm left with is the thought of spending the phone money on a nice camera. The big issue: Is it possible to tie an Apple Watch and an iPad out to a single phone number like you do when you have an iPhone at the center of the operation?

I did a similar thing ? Having only copper wire phone line ,Internet was slow and expensive. My solution to a laptop ,land line Mobile phone and tablet, is phablet Samsung Active2 and a Motorola Defy. I use the Motorola as the hot-spot and the Samsung Active as the tablet/ computer , and back up phone when needed . This is much more user friendly. I am a general browser, not a Internet worker . But this works very well , not missing land-line/ home Internet, the Samsung Active/ Motorola combo while not being cutting edge or top specs, in fact quite low specs by today's standards, works great for me .

I’m a digital nomad and full-time international travel vlogger. My VOIP line comes in clutch because I’m always switching sim cards jumping from country to country. A VOIP line lets me keep the same number that I can use internationally over wifi. Unfortunately, I still have to keep a standard cell phone line active because some services can detect if you’re using a voip line and will only let you register for their services if you have a real phone line.

Great video, I gave my personal laptop to my parents as soon as i got an iPad mini. True I do have a work provided laptop, but i never take it for trips. The iPad mini with an hdmi adapter works great if I want to watch movies on a hotel TV. Usually when im on a trip i need it for minimal work done, like checking emails, browsing the web and minor stuff like that. I never take my work laptop for personal things anymore. If more people have to look at the screen, its bound to be connected/casted to an external monitor, so why bother with the entire laptop when the iPad is sufficient. I've done whole presentations off the iPad directly while connected to a projector. I've thought of getting one of those knock off magic keyboards for it, but I realised that if it comes to a point where I need an actual keyboard, then the screen size isnt sufficient as well. iPad + iPhone combo is perfect for everything I need that isn't work related.

Watching this from my microsoft duo. Which is a bummer microsoft is abandoning because it literally is intended to be all 3 of those things. It's weakest as a phone but way better as a phone than an iPad mini since it was intended to be one. Great vid, and with the impending doom of the duo the iPad mini may be my next portable computing device. No screen extension to a second monitor is a huge negative for me though. It's what I loved most about the Microsoft Duo vs standard folding single displays. The dual screen forward approach with additional video out capabilities.

I did something similar with my Samsung Tab A! Ran into the same issues with bathroom logistics and not being easy to carry around (the Tab A is bigger than the iPad mini) and it was not convenient for document editing because I didn't hook up an external keyboard, but otherwise pretty good - it was great for attending online classes and meetings during the lockdowns. While not able to switch entirely over to it, I've made it my default entertainment and social media hub, so the phone is only for calls, text, taking photos and payments + laptop for more intensive work.

I use a Mini as a "laptop" and tablet when traveling and sometimes when I'm out and about and need more than my phone. I use it with a folding keyboard and the pencil. It works pretty well-although it is not a replacement for my MacBook, which has sophisticated video and photo editing software. With that said, I. have done simple video and photo editing on it, which has worked out well. This is mostly for clients who need work done on the fly. Yes, I could have brought along my MacBook, but the Mini is so much lighter, and I usually bring a heavy camera, lenses, etc. On a personal level, I can absolutely write and edit my blog using the Mini. Lastly, I love the battery life.

Thinking about your proposal from my Fold4 🤣. All jokes aside, a M1/M2 foldable device with a screen size similar to the Fold4 or iPad mini, is just the device Apple needs to pull be back to the their ecosystem.

I’ve been using a regular iPad as a sort of laptop replacement for almost 8 years (I think that’s when my prehistoric MacAir laptop died, & never got replaced). We do have an iMac 🖥️ that we named The Mothership, but that is used mostly by my spouse. Lately been looking at the mini, so I clicked on this video. We’ll see.

Edit: the bathroom issue … the sink tops in both of my bathrooms are close enough to the toilet to be able to set it there. And if I’m out in public, I just leave it in my bag. I’m looking to replace cable tv, internet and phone. I already have an iPad mini, but my daughter’s iPad needs replacing, so I was considering getting an iPad with wireless to use as a phone. But after watching your video, I should probably just go with an iPhone. Also going to check out Mint mobile, because my other daughter wants a real phone number. This is so helpful! Many thanks!

most issues you mention seem to be solvable quite easy. the phone restrictions are quite arbitrary and can be solved with software (by apple), the tablet size is actually perfect for many applications like reading or note taking and if the mini gets a new chipset in the future it can make a decent desktop replacement. only as a laptop it‘s very compromised due to the small screen. i see a bright future for the ipad mini ❤

I use an iPhone 12 mini and an iPad mini. I don’t have a computer anymore. I work in adult education. For most things private and work this is a really good combination. But since I’m I the age reading glasses come into play stuff like excel sheets are really a downer (although for me they always have been - in every size). But most of my work is reading and listening and watching content and having notes or texts or presentations as an output - and for all of that the IPad mini and phone is ideal. Since I carry the phone in my breast pocket a foldable phone wouldn’t be an option unless there would be a really good other selling point.

The iPad mini has been an awesome addition to my daily activities. I haven't used it as a phone but I do use it as an auxiliary monitor with my macbook. The best thing is that I use it as a whiteboard or to show circuit analysis sims when using zoom. With the "share via airplay" option in zoom, I bring up Multisim Live or EveryCircuit on my iPad mini and can share that without setting up a different camera or having to hold my iPad mini up to the camera.

The video explores using the iPad Mini as a phone, tablet, and computer replacement, but it is not recommended to use it as the sole device for all computing needs. It performs tablet functions well, phone functions just okay, and computer functions not so great. The future of having one device serve multiple roles may not be too far off with the potential of foldable devices and Apple silicon chips.

I am currently exploring the same idea, but with Android devices. I've used Fold 2 and 3, and they are really, really good phones, but to be able to trully replace the laptop, you need more screen real estate, so I am currently going with Galaxy Tab S9 as my only device. Samsung doesn't restrict you from making calls from their tablet, and DeX mode is there, so it's quite a bit easier than iPad Mini. Hopefully, this year Apple will release a macos for their bigger ipads, and bumpup iPad Mini to the M-series, we'll find out soon enough.

I also have an iPad Mini. It is my favorite iPad. I have a 12.9 M2 Pro as well. It is my primary knowledge capture and reading and note taking device. I am never without it. To tell the truth I answer the phone with it more often than I use the iPhone. I can’t wait for a new version of the iPad mini. Back in the day people used to carry something called a “Commonplace Book.” A commonplace book is a personal compilation of knowledge, ideas, observations, and quotations. It is a notebook or journal where people record and collect information that they find interesting, useful, or inspiring. The concept of a commonplace book dates back several centuries and has been practiced by many notable individuals throughout history, including writers, philosophers, scientists, and thinkers. The iPad mini is my digital version of a commonplace book. I keep mine in a leather book cover that also holds my Apple Pencil. It is perfect for writing down notes while sitting in a dimly lit bar sipping on a nice scotch or chianti. It never runs out of paper. If you get it with WiFi+Cellular, you almost don’t need a phone. Just add a VOIP plan, from Vonage or someone, even SKYPE. I highly recommend the iPad mini.

A neat experiment, but while the iPad Mini is probably the BEST all-in-one device and I loved having one in high school, I’ll stick with phone/tablet/laptop/desktop, all four with different functions. Have an iPhone XR that makes up 90% of my smart device usage outside the home, an iPad Air 5 that’s responsible for about half my in-home tech usage, a 2019 Windows laptop that both does laptop things my iPad Air can’t and also does Windows things an Apple product can’t, and a 2014 Windows desktop that still is great for gaming today. They all have their use cases that can’t quite be filled if I try to get an all-in-one device. (Also, for toilet usage - same as my phone, when I had an iPad Mini 2 I just held it in my right hand while I wiped with my left. Not that difficult)

Same exact boat. Same devices as you. All irreplaceable. Love my XR btw! Amazed it’s still hanging in there all these years. Bought a mini… can’t find a real good use for it. The air handled my multimedia stuff in-home perfectly.

@aryaa4581 I actually found a solution since I made that comment - about 10 months ago I bought an older Z Fold as a trial run to see if it acratched the same itch as an iPad Mini without making me carry two devices, and it actually did. Plus it turned out I liked Android better than IOS, so now I have a Z Fold 6, Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, Galaxy Watch 7, and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro. All in all they cost about $2000, _including_ the trial Z Fold, so really the Z Fold sticker price is misleading, just gotta look for deals. If you're interested in an iPad Mini but not interested enough to carry it at the same time as a phone, and you're not completely locked into the Apple ecosystem/like trying new things, you might like a Z Fold. "The screen is bigger" isn't inherently that big of a plus depending on what you're doing with it, but it's dramatically better for viewing and filling out PDFs (something I do fairly often in college), great for desktop versions of websites, great for running multiple apps at once, and I can't think of anything offhand that's not at least a little better on a Z Fold compared to a typical phone (aside from the durability, but I've never personally had a problem with that). Plus the outer screen when folded is narrow enough to be comfortable for one-handed typing like the iPhone Mini/SE. Totally fair if you don't want to spend a minimum of $700 on a device that's easier to break than most phones, but if you've got the money and were thinking of upgrading anyway, I don't think a better phone exists.

I pretty much do this with my Samsung Ultra. If it had a pen like my ipad mini for drawing and taking notes I really wouldn't need anything else except for games. I'd love a single device ecosystem. I could imagine having a phone sized device that has pen like the iPads, and then a docking station to allow it to run better graphics and and things when necessary, but having the option to take whatever select files with you in the go when needed.

The iPad mini is the only device I need . I use a phone app ( Text now ) for all my phone needs. Like everyone else , I mostly text anyway. The iPad mini is the perfect device while on the go and to take to work . With a laptop / large tablet you need a table , with an iPad mini you can use it while lying on a sofa , in bed or sitting in a chair . When I’m at work I can watch sports during the down time , a phone would be too small and anything larger than an iPad mini wouldn’t be portable enough. For me , the iPad mini is the perfect all in one device .

With the amount of information overload and digital clutter already in my life, I'm trying to go the opposite direction and getting a smaller phone, and case that holds a card to replace my wallet. It's crazy how we have this need to be online or in the digital space all the time and miss the moments of what's physically around us. Phone+keys in a pocket, and done, when I'm out I rather be out and checked out, rather than digitally checked in 24 hours. This just reminds me how our lives, potentially mentally cluttered, carries over to how we are also physically cluttered.

I'm on my tablet 85%, laptop 10% and phone 5%. A Samsung tablet or a Chrome tablet works well for the first two functions. I don't mind carrying around a phone because it's small\portable and acts as a hotspot. I was thinking future versions of foldable phones could be tri-folds, but then apple came out with the Vision Pro. If Apple make the front a phone screen and figure out the battery, then we truly have a 3 in 1 device with little drawbacks.

I have often thought of this but haven’t ever tried it. And I think the I phone will eventually come to this but not be intended to replace other devices. If Apples competitors build something like this then Apple will follow. Every where you go you see people using a phone for browsing or something, So I think one day soon we will see a crossover type iPhone that is about as powerful as the mini and almost as big.
