Hi Jimmy, you have demonstrated a good approach, showing the system dedicated for performance access and data backup. Personally I think that direct attached storage will work way faster for your video editing. I would oppose a combination of a high capacity NVMe SSD connected via thunderbolt interface to your PC and the NAS for the data backup. On my MacBook I'm using embedded rsync - command line toll to backup data from directly connected storage. Mac automator helps me to schedule backup process and avoid use of common line interface.

Hey Jimmy, I’m still in 2 minds whether to go for the Pro MAX or 16 PLUS ??? BUT you have a new Sub (& Like) I really do like how you present the show. Good review dude. Straight to the point with some analogy and background info. Keep it up, but

Great video, I was wondering if it's possible to set up something like this that is mobile by hooking it up with Starlink? I travel for work occasionally and would like to have a plex server, and also be able to do some light gaming on a laptop.

Most MacBook Air reviews are compared a lot in relation to creators , always talking about video editing and gaming , but the truth is even the base model for daily use is just enough

4:16 a fourth option is to install something behind the existing switch, just in case you don't like the size of all the smart switches on offer (I'm guessing that size is a US standard, it's like 3 times the size of our switches here in NZ).

I really enjoyed this video and watched it all the way to the end. the video started great in terms of generalizing who might need to know this information (ex. gamers etc etc) as we move along it gets very complex and yes the video is long as it is but more importantly I feel like people need to know as I learnt the hard way is that 1gb, 2.5gb, 5gb and 10gb don't auto negotiate very well depending on hardware limitations (and that what we will all be facing). one thing that I think i would have love to hear about is your trial and tribulations around setting up a network before getting prosumer/enterprise level equipment. because as a 'newbie' 90 percent if not most of the world will not be able to get the access to afford being given ubiquiti hardware to learn how to home network or homelab thier home. please don't get me wrong, as far as explaining what's capable it's a great video. just out of reach for me and I guess anyone else like me. if we knew more about where you came from and what you learnt about the hard ware before getting all the 'expensive' stuff might be eaiser for us to look forward ahead and anticipate what to do next and learn from your mistakes. at least for me that would resonate more for me. I am not a content creator looking for free stuff I am just a regular guy, just like you, where you once were wishing to be where you are now. ☺️ cheers mate!

This is helpful. These things are so overpriced that scoffed at the discounred $1100, as I'm debating the value at $800. It seems like Apple sticks it to their customers for every little upgrade. So yes, the 1 year review helps a lot more than day 1 reviews.

My 2013 Latitude is still going strong 11 years later. Installing a lighter OS like Linux Mint (which is what I use) helps massively vs. the bloated experience that is modern Windows. Yeah, you need to have some tech-savviness to use Linux, but probably not as much as you might think.

Waiting for my 1821+ w 6x 4tb hdds, got it for 1k usd used. My plan is to use it for everything you said. However I'll get 2x ssd for the system to run on and 2x 1tb nvme for cache. Then active projects will be done on my computer or external drive and when completed it'll be archived on the nas. At least thats the plan for now. :)

What a nightmare in letting family members outside of your household to use the NAS. I did this once. When I wanted to make changes, I had to worry about the other person's stuff. I had to wait until they secured their info before I could make any changes. Nope. That's bad suggestion.

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever thought of the possibility of Apple's marketing strategy surrounding the release of the m1 series chip and how much better they knew it was for mobile computing than Intel macs were? Remember, when everyone reacted to the performance improvements, the BATTERY LIFE? It was almost orders of magnitude better than the generation previous to the m1. Apple had been designing their own chips for years by the m1 release. It was also absolutely obvious that x86/64 based processors performance gains were closely correlated to power consumption. Why didn't Apple choose to release their arm based cpu's sooner? They were already miles ahead of their counterparts. They could've released an aX bionic variant for at least the MacBook Air line surely earlier than they did. The possible answer to this question is that Rosetta wasn't ready yet, but I might beg to differ. When Rosetta was released, everyone also was raving at the seamlessness of functionality and that why hadn't Microsoft been able to do so earlier? There were very few bugs I've heard of. It was a software release unlike any other. Consider this however. What if Rosetta was basically polished years before release. Knowing where x86/64 was heading (performance/power consumption) why did they choose to stay for so long and then hard pivot? Obviously the m1 was a generational leap. But it's release also meant that their previous generations of MacBook would be rendered all but obsolete with the m1. And resale prices would plummet, leading to Intel macs being sold dirt cheap. This leads to poor people who couldn't otherwise afford a MacBook without the Intel versions being so heavily discounted. But now $2000+ laptops are available for pennies on the dollar (slight exaggeration). Now these people who never could afford an iPhone or MacBook now have entered the infamous "walled garden". Those lower level consumers who have a laptop that they normally wouldn't be able to afford now get a taste of this ecosystem. A truly Marvelous ecosystem. But an addictive ecosystem. Apple now had access to a consumer segment they were unable to access. These new lower earning consumers now get to experience what all us techies refer to as the Apple experience. Depending on interpretation, this is either brilliant or predatory. Either way, if you really think about it, I'm not sure I agree with it either way. How many of us have cautioned our loved ones who are in the market for a car, and depending on their finances, steer them away from a Mercedes because of the cost of maintenance and/or repair? No matter the great deal on this expensive car, we try to reason with them to at least evaluate this choice very carefully as to not end up with a car r that they can't afford to get fixed. They get this Intel MacBook as their first Apple product, but their Android phone doesn't work as nicely with it. So they get an iPhone. But their smartwatch someone bought for them for Christmas now won't sync with the phone and laptop. So they buy an apple watch. In a short amount of time, that Intel MacBook will be rendered obsolete, and they will have no choice but to buy an ARM based MacBook if they want as seamless a transition as possible. Remember, there isn't a (what I would consider truly budget) option at the entry level. Cheapest new iPhone is what, 400 bucks? The cheapest android is a fraction of the price. Yes, it isn't as good, but at least that entry level android phone will still work with whatever peripherals I currently own. No compromises as far as functionality. There is absolutely zero equivalent option for a super price restricted consumer to purchase an equivalent cheap iPhone versus the option to purchase a truly budget/entry level android. This is troubling for me to see. Makes me wonder. I hope I'm being cynical. But as I wrote this comment, and question everything I said, even play devil's advocate, I come to the same concerning conclusion.

My phone company supplies a modem that has a standard 4-port LAN switch built in. We’re on their baseline tier, 100Mbps which can deliver 120Mbps. We websurf and use regular TV streaming in 2 rooms, so 100Mbps is plenty. I’d like to fill in some weak WiFi spots in the house. Ironically, the static devices that could use Ethernet (computers, streaming TV boxes) work fine off WiFi. It’s only roving laptops and phones that have issues sometimes. I haven’t mentioned the router yet. The phone company supplies that too, also with a 4-port LAN (and is the WiFi source). It’s centrally located on the main floor. Wifi in the basement is OK and WiFi on the 2nd floor is OK but it does get weaker at all house corners. For each tier there is “no extra charge” (no rental) for this WiFi router. But I don’t have to use it … I’ve connected a computer directly into the modem and it works just fine. What I do not have access to are the other 3 ports on the modem, non-functional.

I,m in a state of purchase paralysis as I bought the iPad mini 6 with an Apple Pencil 2. I want to upgrade to the latest Air, but they dropped support for the pencil 2 and now will have to buy one of the new pencils. I should have been able to upgrade without having to change the pencil. Then the bring out this 10th gen ipad and I can,t even downgrade as I wanted to go for the bigger screen. This is so disrespectful towards Apple customers to pull these stunts just so they can force you to spend shitloads more money. Seriously thinking about leaving Apple products altogether.

I have a Caldigit TS3+ and my only gripe with it is that it doesn’t supports the usb protocol. I can’t use my steam deck on it so connecting it to my monitor is tedious with a second cable, but my work laptop and personal MacBook are a simple swap of the thunderbolt cable. It makes moving from work to leisure super easy
