@@Emtbtoday Firstly, sorry for your loss. One of my favourite things about this random build was Dad’s help. Having footage of him was an eye opener and now I actively try get random clips of both my parents. They are getting older these days. The other week I was at their place watching the footy, so I just set my camera up in the corner and let it record us the whole game. Hearing Mum screen with excitement when we scored is classic now, but one day that footage will be very precious. Ive been thinking of projects I can get them involved in for this reason. I want to sew a frame bag so I’m thinking I’ll get mum involved. She is the sewing expert in the family, can’t wait to see her cursing 😂

I’m not very good at it but there is only one way to get better. 😀 Dad was a fitter and machinist back in the day and has a lot of tools. It’s definitely a great spot to hang out and play. Not much room to get around though. He needs a bigger shed. They live about a 50min drive from my place so this was filmed over 6 months. Every time I went to visit I filmed a little more. Same with a 29er and 27.5 on 27.5/27.5+ fox 38s still work's with the end of the scale offset being 44mm it works good with a 2.5 magic mary i done this as a test for a mullet set up on my 27.5+ fox 38s. I don't use bigger than a 2.4/2.5 tyre anyway and its working just fine

Throughout your video, all I was thinking about were the brake callipers and how precise the alignment needed to be, to the point where I was having a nervous breakdown. Cheers mate. It’s funny you have commented on this today. I’ve made a very similar video but this time welding brake tabs on the front and rear of another old bike I have. The edit is pretty much finished and I plan on polishing it tonight ready for an upload. I talk more about the ISO standards and where the tabs need to sit in more detail in the new video. Great watch! In case you didn't know, you can place the cup on the material you're trying to weld, that wey it's less shakey or you can use the "walk the cup" method. One you learned that you will never go back.

I’ve heard of walk the cup and seen how amazing the welds look. I’m very much an amateur though and am probably not ready for that. I don’t think I’ve touched the Tig since making this video. I’d love to get good at it but without my own it’s a bit hard to consistently practice. I’m actually planning on trying to make a double decker bike just so I can play with the tig again. Can’t wait! i swapped to a 2.1" in my small trek 7300fs disc.. hybrid meant for 35mm 700c.. great success.. rear wheel needed a bit of disc adjustment. but having the 29x2.1 beside my 26x1.75 city bike.. lol beside my 27.5 50mm it's normal. beside my 2.3 26 you can't notice much

Just wanted to say that Raleigh bikes are a British company that has been building bikes since 1887 in Nottinghamshire and are still based in Nottinghamshire and my first bike was a Raleigh Budgie, and then I had the Raleigh boxer in yellow, and then I had a Raleigh striker in green ,and then I had a Raleigh grifter with 3 gears in blue ,and then the bmx Raleigh mag burner in blue n yellow, then a Raleigh burner bmx in golg and then a Raleigh pursuit 12 speed racing bike in black and a Raleigh milk race 12 speed in pure white ,and then mountain bikes came out and I had the Raleigh mustang in light purple 24 speed weighed a ton as it was made from steel even the chrome wheels but back then it was a good mtb bike .

I'm also trying to make a gravel Monstercross with a frame from a specialized one from the early 90s, but I think the frame design dates back to the late 80s as it still has the 1" seat tube and the 26.8 seat tube. (too bad, a I would have tried to fit a possible telescopic seat post). At the moment I am making small economic attempts mainly with the intention of evaluating whether this frame deserves, due to its geometries and dimensions, rideability etc etc, a possible upgrade with target components a little higher than the economical first price. for the transmission I am currently on a classic 3x8 (44/34/22 x 11/32) also purchased at the decathlon at the end of this study on the economical components I will evaluate whether an upgrade of the components will be possible and convenient (important I want to try to fit 650bx2.00s on it and consequently weld the disc brake mounts on it) and put a gravel-oriented transmission, or otherwise set it up for simple daily use or cycle touring. it will be a long period of evaluations and tests, but these old steel frames have their charm, incredible quality welds and proportions and angles that are very close to the current Gravel ones, with a wheelbase of about 4-5% higher which should give better stability. Buying a Triban Grvl 120 would perhaps be easier, faster, and not much more expensive at the end of all the tests if I opted for the definitive upgrade, but the fact remains that this frame is so beautiful and I'm fond of it, that I would do something with it anyway, so you might as well do it right away

Nice conversion and entertaining video, would love to see part 2! I would not do the dropouts in my 90’s bike but I’m considering the disc brake conversion and add points to attach cargo cages, I have mechanical technician background, have knowledge about bike mechanics and know how to weld but I don’t have all the tools and requires a lot of hours, it’s more about the enjoying the process of adapting, changing or improving something. You did an excellent job, cheers mate!

I’m still really keen to do part 2, only problem is I have to travel about an hour to my parents house where the tools are. I then chat for hours and get nothing done. I have put 27.5 Ikons into a 26" frame and had trouble with the seat height because the seat to ground increased and seat to pedal stayed the same. The fork mod is fascinating and a review would be appreciated once you've thoroughly thrashed it. Thanks for sharing.

Will do 😂 I’ve had a similar issue with this bike, the frame has always been too big for me and now with the bigger wheels the standover height is too high. I dead set have to be on tippy toes 😂. I’ve recently got a smaller frame and I’m currently in the process of filming a little story on it. Apart from that, the bars I used turned out to be a bit of a fail, they’re too low and I get a sore neck riding from looking up so much. I’d still like to try proper drop bars as the hoods sit higher. That might happen with this new frame. We’ll see how it rides 👍

This is in equal parts absolutely bonkers and the best thing I’ve ever seen! 😂 I’ve recently posted a video of me having converted a flat bar hybrid to a drop bar gravel and am shortly about to start a 90s MTB to gravel project. Like you, I just love tinkering with bikes and seeing what can be done with them. I’ve had loads of people telling me the 90s MTB frame isn’t worth throwing money at and that I’m clearly stupid for even considering it but for me it’s all a learning exercise and a bit of fun! Great video though and seriously well done with the disc brake mount! That would be the part of the job that I’d massively screw up and they’d end up out of alignment! 😂

I just had a look at the Sensah gear. Nice and cheap! I’m definitely keen to give drops ago so I’ll keep them in mind. I just went for a 30km ride with these Corner Bars and I think the ride position is a bit low, I had a sore neck from looking up for 30km. I think the hoods on drop bars sit up higher so they should be perfect. I may have also just picked up another old Raleigh so it could be a good option for drops. I’ve got a problem 😂 Cheers!

@@advanturest I've had that same neck issue also, unfortunately the geometry of drop bars lengthens the reach and lowered the stack just by their nature, I'm in decided whether it works for me now I've done it 😕 (bike fit). Some things that can be done, shorter stem or down size the frame. Also try a helmet with no peak and frameless sunglasses. This reduced the amount I had to 'look up past'.

Are those "Suspension Corrected" Forks? The Raleigh Technium originally came with a shock absorber eh? The fork you show on here isn't as long dimensionally as the original Suspension Fork thereby throwing the bikes handling off by quite a bit. It most likely is sagging in the front giving it a real uncomfortable over the bars feel to it. If the bike didn't come originally with shock absorption front forks then disregard...but, if so...ask me how I know?

You are correct! On the bench holding the forks vertical it seemed right. I’ve been riding them like this for about 18 months now and didn’t notice until someone else commented the same thing and got me to check. This was only earlier this year. It’s a little annoying but rides and works perfectly fine. I actually just rode to work this morning with these forks and was thinking about these dropouts being back to front 😂

Sweet Bike as I personally don't get the hate for old MTB's as it makes no sense to me . The 1990's bikes were some of best looking MTB's and are still fun to ride . To me it's the equivalence of owning a 1968 Dodge Charger and claiming that its junk , outdated as a modern car is faster and drives better so I'm never going to drive the Charger sitting in the garage . I own a 1991 KONA Hei Hei that I recently found at a thrift store about 8 months ago for $50 . All the original components were swapped out during the early 2000's with cheap bike store parts as the person likely thought they were upgrading . The Hei Hei is a Ti frame race bike that originally came with the best of the best components for the time period as this person was a dolt to replace them all with junk right down to the rims , had a 5lb Rock Shox Judy TT 🤣 , changed the decals etc .. but I'm not complaining as it was only $50 I just recently retro modded it and the bike is a perfect adult BMX bike that I use for my urban cycling adventures , I do however take it in the woods on occasion but its a chore with the old geometry and little wheels . I will restore it to factory at some point as I slowly find the parts as its a very sought after and very rare bike as it's KONA's most collectible bike as in 1992 not many people were forking over $2,500 for a MTB . MTBing was in its infancy and just starting to become popular so not many were made as my guess is less than 1,000 , so yes it will be restored in the future .. I'm also on the fence to find someone who can weld Titanium to convert the bike to rear disc but I likely won't to keep it factory .....but 😉

26 mtb fork with 27.5 x 2.1 wheelset works just fine. Only downside is only left with slight small clearance, so dont ride it in a mud.

No I haven't sorry. I have heard a few people say things like this but i'm a bit of a hack and didn't care. If that was an issue then nobody could convert a rim brake fork. I just wanted to try and see what happened. I've converted 3 old bikes to disc brakes and have ridden with a few others with converted forks. No one has an issue. You might be correct to say modern forks have a thicker wall to compensate for the forces closer to the axle but i can't image there would be much difference. I do heaps of bikepacking trips with fully loaded bikes and yeah, No issues, no sense of twisting etc. Good Luck with your search.

That is magnificent! I'm in the process of changing a 2007 Giant Rincon to 27.5" for flat bar gravel riding (with cheap Ali Express aluminium fork). Luckily it has enough clearance to fit the 2.0" tyres I want to use and has disc tabs. My main goal is to convert a 90's Cannondale F400 to rigid and disc. This will require a disc tab to be aluminium brazed to the frame which, being no good at welding/brazing, is a bit daunting. How do you find the drop bars? I was thinking about getting those style so I can keep using the MTB style brakes and shifters. Are you in a comfortable position with them?

Yeah I’m actually loving the bars, but they were very wrong in this video. I changed it up for a trip I did called fun coastal bikepacking trip. This was better but still not right. I then put a taller stem to bring it up a bit higher and since then I’m really happy with them. My 2nd most recent video I was using them with this higher stem. I’ve been riding up in the “hood” position so squeezing the break can feel a little weak but so far it’s been fine. And that’s even with a fully loaded bike. So at first I wouldn’t have recommended but now I would. I actually started making a video about my thoughts on them but haven’t got around to finishing it. I think they’re a great option for the 90’s bikes because of the shorter reach. I like them so much I would even put them on a hard tail. Bit of front suspension for the rougher stuff yet a bit of a roady feel to it too. Good luck with your build!

650b wheels of the same resulting outer dimension will only elevate the BB, which is not good. It is also a less stiff wheel.

I don't have an accurate answer for you, but I don't think paint stripper effects the metal. In my case I had just a small area and the wire wheel takes the paint off so easily. Paint stripper can also be a bit messy. Saying that, I have tried using paint stripper on a set of forks a few years ago and it just didn't work that great. I think the modern-day paint strippers are crap compared to the good old stuff. I don't know much about it but my guess they no longer have some type of deadly chemical. Could be a good thing to research.

That one was a replacement unit sent by the manufacturer after we had problems with our very first Keurig. This works fine (lol, at least for now) however I didn't realize the water reservoir was so much smaller than our prior unit. With 2 people having one or two cups of coffee each morning, it seems like I'm refilling it daily. Otherwise just happy to have the convenience of pod coffee vs. making a morning pot.

I’m trying to learn how to tig, I use it about once every 6 months which is not enough. Every opportunity I can I try use the tig. I’m not sure what the best way is but for me I’m just playing so tig it is.

@@findtherightbeat I’m guessing you’re talking about the bridge I road across. It’s the Woranora Bridge. There is a pedestrian path underneath the bridge. Most shots were filmed with my Canon R6. Although I still have an older Canon EOSr which was used for some shots. Riding scene was a GoPro 8. Cheers

There wasn’t any like it at the time, well not that I know off. It’s really cool being underneath. You don’t hear the noise of the traffic above and the views of the river below are great. These days I see a lot of bridges built this way. Separates the cars from the pedestrians.

I’ve got a bit of a mess really. Here is a list of my bikes. I have my newest bike which is getting older now. It’s a 2015 Trek dual suspension XC bike. I then have a Commencal DH bike which I think is about a 2009 model. As for the older 90’s bikes. I first got the Raleigh M-Trax 1000 for something to tinker with when I got into bikepacking. It’s a little large for me so I got a smaller Shogun Trail breaker. I don’t know if I got a bad model but it’s very stiff and a harsh ride. Not a fan of that Shogun at all. I then got the Mongoose only because I saw it for $25. Turns out I love the Mongoose. Since then I bought another cheap Raleigh to replace the one in this video. It’s got a smaller frame and fits me better. I’m really not sure what is my favourite. I’ve had some awesome times on all of them. My Mongoose in particular. The Mongoose just seems like a smoother ride although that could be just in my head. I’m not the biggest fan of the early 90’s shapes though. I think the later 90’s bikes with 1 1/8 headsets look better. I’m still looking for something decent with double butted Chromoly frame and 1 1/8 steerer. I’m keen on the 1995 Trek 930 if I can find one. Just missed out on a cheap one the other week and I was bummed 😂 Lastly I have a pretty immaculate Apollo Himalaya. My grandma won it back in the 90’s and I don’t think it’s been ridden. It’s very similar to my Mongoose in terms of size and shape. Not sure what to do with it. It’s too clean for me to touch 😂 None of my old bikes were high end. I’ve been putting modern components on most anyway so it doesn’t matter too much.

So far I’ve done 5 fully loaded bikepacking trips with these forks plus multiple big day rides and so far they have been working perfectly. I have the forks on a different frame to this one, it’s another old Raleigh but just a smaller frame that fits me better. So any of my videos that I’m riding a bike with the corner bars are using these forks. One thing I’ve recently found out is I put the dropouts in backwards. Not sure how I managed that. They still work fine though.

I’m planning to make my Old MTB on 27.5 1.9 wheels with Panaracer gravelking tires, basically everything will fit into the frame, but most likely not into the fork, I now have 26x1.95 52mm tires , while the gap on the fork is about 2.5cm, and the width fits a maximum of 54mm 26x2.15, I’m thinking of buying another fork with wide gaps and doing this with it.What about drops, did the dropouts have any problems with them?

@@dnchgcyclist I’m not sure where you’re based but I got the dropouts from a local bike shop hear in Sydney that specialise in frame building. They are called Hillbrick. hillbrick.com.au/ Since doing this mod I’ve noticed some old forks have more clearance than others. I’ve even had people tell me they have fit 27.5 wheels into their 26in forks. You might be able to find some without going to the effort. Maybe you’re like me and just like to tinker and do random things 😂 good luck with the build.

They’re a carbon copy of the Surly Corner Bar. These carbon ones are from Ali Express and are very light. I’ve been using them a fair bit and no problems so far. @@ControlAltGar No issues at all. Have these people ever converted a bike themselves? My guess is they haven’t. I’ve done 3 bikes now and they are all fine. I too get people telling me all sorts of things. A good one is that the metal in the fork legs is too thin on forks designed for canti brakes. Apparently not thick enough for disks. I think they’re absolutely crazy for thinking this. One of my bikes I have the calliper adaptor peice held down with a hose clamp. It’s been like this for a few years and I’ve done many fully loaded bikepacking trips like it. Still no problem. My only real issue is that Canti brakes can be really good so what’s the point. For me I did it so I can use wheels I have that’s only have the disc option.

@@advanturest My fork is an unicrown one designed for cross/mtb. i don't think is too thin but still i decided to install a plate on the lower leg and then on it the brake's mount too (both brass-brazed). i mean there are plenty of material but still people are killing the joy of this project. I just think to swap fork because i'll never fully trust this one :( I have to admit that i saw some broken forks but c'mon! they are all designed for road!!

@@ControlAltGar Honestly, I don't know where people come up with these ideas. I'm not a frame builder so technically I know nothing, but If you look on a bike building store that sells fork blades for building your own forks. The wall thickness is like 0.9mm to 1mm. Its then up to the builder to decide if they want to weld or braise on disc brake tabs, or canti lever brake mounts etc. There are definitely cheap bikes with poor quality steel used which for sure could break. The forks i've worked on are all old but have been 4130 chromoly. They're very strong. There is a video by Cobra Framebuilding that talks about this. He thinks that a certain generation relates unicrown forks to cheap bikes. Heaps of the top brands still use unicrown forks, there is nothing wrong with them. But they use decent metal. I think you will be fine. I’ve got 4 old 90’s bikes and none would fit. I have seen a few bikes on market place that look to have a much larger gap between the wheel and fork crown. The Giant boulder must be one of them. Maybe I should of just bought one of them 😂

I’ve been running a 2.2 maxxis ikon tyre no problem. My coastal bikepacking trip video was on a different bike with the same forks and wheels. It was a 3 day trip and It survived. Will be uploading another 3 day trip video with this setup in a few days time. So far so good!

How are they backwards? By your comment it sounds like you know more than I do 😂 I think I know your answer but here’s my take. I did no real research but I did look at other forks and I found photos of both directions. In my view, as I’ve done them, any impact into the front wheel would be pushing the axle into the dropouts. If I did them the other way around then a hard whack to the front wheel could push the axle out of the slots because the slot faces more backwards. If that makes any sense? I know that shouldn’t happen with a tight skewer but it just made more sense to me. Id love to know if they is a technical standard. And to answer your question, you’re the first person to pick up on it.

@@advanturest hope it didn't sound like a troll comment, sorry. Most all dropouts are set up to drop out towards the rear; but with the curve of the fork its basically facing down. There's hardly any forks I've ever seen facing forwards like yours. But it's your fork, idk if there's any problem with it. If you've ridden it and it's fine, well good . My only other thought was, if you went to all the trouble to do this, but not converting to thru-axle seems odd. But you explained why you did that, so...

@@keithcieplinski no all good, if I thought it was a nasty troll I probably wouldn’t have replied. I’m genuinely interested in your question, One day I’d love to build my own bike including forks. Any new info I get is always helpful. Something that has bothered me is that I never mentioned in the video that I didn’t know what I was doing. I did put a title at the start saying I’m just experimenting but my guess a lot of viewers don’t read that. For me I just love making stuff, even if I have no clue. I’m also obsessed with cameras and love filming things. This seemed like a fun experiment to film. I just had a re watch of the start of the video and can see the old dropouts went the opposite way. I’m eager to get home now and look at the forks. I wonder if the angle of the new dropout slots is a lot sharper which made me do it the way I did. Either way, I’ve done a heap of bikepacking trips with them and so far no issues at all. I haven’t lost any front teeth yet so I suppose that’s a good thing 😂
