We finally were able to get the steering box in our 1998 Land Rover Discovery 1 replaced after installing a faulty replacement the first time. This is a fairly easy job and one most DIY mechanics will be able to handle in an afternoon.

I’m 75 years old and have never had a British made vehicle until last year. I stumbled into buying a 1997 Land Rover Discovery1 because my neighbor had to get rid of it, and the price was right. There was a lot of things wrong with it, but I liked the body style and the fact that it was made of aluminum. So, I turned it into my new project car and was determined to restore it the best I could. I also got a 1971 Triumph TR6R Tiger motorcycle in the deal which will be my project later this summer. After several thousand dollars of buying big tires, new Rhino wheels, a new first-class headliner and many other things, I now have one of the hottest Discovery 1 vehicles around. I even found and bought the last brand-new factory made Bonnet Insulation Pad on the planet. My latest addition is a new radio that plays CDs, streams HD radio stations, and can answer my phone for me. I appreciate your videos on fixing things on the Discovery 1, because there aren’t many people who do that anymore and to see it done is refreshing. Thanks,

Land Rover, turning owners in to mechanics since 1948😁. Great vid as usual, in the end it sounds as if the pws pump is making a bit of noise. A tip for next time is to install everything and if the steering wheel is not centered, centre that. Hope you took it for alignment afterwards just get her rolling straight and keep the tires happy. 😎👍👍👍👍

Haven’t taken it in yet, I’m gonna replace all the end links today or tomorrow and take it in. All the boots on the ball joints are shot and I know the one connected to the drop arm has probably consumed more ATF than the gearbox, so I’d best do it now to be safe!

How is this box holding up? Mine is leaking alot of juice I'm debating a shaft seal replacement or spring for one of these reman joints and cross fingers.
@MattKester
@MattKester 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jesse, it’s still holding up well with no apparent leaks. I had thought about resealing it myself, but from everything I read, it made it seem like once you go down that route, you’ll just keep resealing it because it’s worn out internals causing the seals to wear out faster. We did get one of these with stripped threads (may have also been my fault on the install as well) and BuyAutoParts.com stood behind it and sent us a replacement with no fuss.

I just saw this video. If you have a moment, I would like to know what symptoms made you replace the box in the first place. I am looking at the same possibility. My D1 has about 1/3 revolution play turning to the left. Much tighter to the right.
@MattKester
@MattKester 2 ай бұрын
I chose to replace due to leaking from the output shaft side of the box. The reason I went with this particular replacement is because it was a fully rebuilt box. The research I did at the time led me to believe that the failing seals were because the internals of the box were worn and changing seals would only be a short term fix before the sloppy tolerances in the box caused a premature failure of the seals again.

Keep up great vids - I just picked up in South America a 96’ 3.9 Manual with Terra Firma lift. Would you mind sharing the box part number, I suspect I will have to replace due to steering play or have it rebuilt.

@@sarahdell4042 Yup... Gear oil was the bane of my existence when I was a truck driver. I'd always carry one of those bottles with the end you clipped off, so you could just stick it in the window on a trailer hub and give it a squeeze to fill. What would inevitably happen after I opened one of those bottles is that they'd tip over in the toolbox, the janky red cap would pop off, and I'd have half a pint of gear oil soaking my chains and binders. Just enough to make you wanna puke the first time you opened it and realized you were in for a cleanup!
