Those 3rd Party caps are crap. See it all the time, people buy thermostat housings from eBay - Cap is weak and because it’s pressurised it just doesn’t seal properly.

OEM new cap and thermostat is only about 40 quid from mini. Recommended to always fit genuine on these

@@TheOtherStuff Considering you’ve stripped near enough every part out of the Mini a thousand times over your brain was probably melting at the time. Nothing major happens, it’s just good practice because if you accidentally touch the chassis when tightening the positive you can bridge the positive to ground super heating the tool and shocking yourself. On a lot of the Fords like the MK3 Focus you have to put the negative on first because of the battery position. :))
