I think this video is the BEST demonstration of the DowelMax! Because Paul shows drilling EACH side of a joint. Most others just show drilling ONE side of the joint, assuming you know how to drill the other side. Thank you for the great demonstration, showing all of us at a rate we can understand!!

I bought dowelmax many years ago when almost all computers had dvd readers. And for many reasons I practically quit doing woodwork and when I decided to build a frame with dowelmax, I did it wrong. My dowels on one face did not match the other face, because I did not register faces. I appreciate this refresher video. Overall, I think dowelmax is a precision jig and I forgot to to be precise. My laptop does not have a dvd reader and so I cannot get tips using that great dvd. I must rely on videos like this one. Thank you again.

I really like this tool as it’s very robustly built and very precise. I was considering getting a domino tool to use loose tenons and mortises. But in actual strength tests, dowels beat the domino mainly because you can create more glue contact by using a number of dowels in the space for one domino. Sure is a lot cheaper when you think about this trade off.

@@paulsmessyworkshop Hi Paul thanks for responding. If I want to use a thicker dowel , how much ticker I can go ? Is there an extra accessory that I can purchase for a ticker dowel ?
@frankpearce25444 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the review. How are the holes centered within the material when using different thickness materials? For example, it looked like you were using 1 inch thickness, I need to use 3/4 inch thickness
@lp90923 жыл бұрын
It’s default is “basically” centred on 3/4 in material. You insert those adjustable spacers to adjust the center point. But they can’t account for infinite numbers of thicknesses. I have found that the key point (for me) is to insert spacers to get as close to center on whatever piece I’m using, (if I even want it centred), but worry less about that and just alway align the check marks on the tool with the wood. Then any variances don’t matter and the boards are always flush.
@paulsmessyworkshop3 жыл бұрын
The Dowel Max references off of what ever FACE you want to be common. If you want it to reference off of the center you would have to shim on all pieces to center the same. By referencing off of the FACE you are guaranteed to have a smooth joint. If that wasn't clear in my video I suggest you check out their website. There are more videos there that might be easier to understand. This jig is crazy accurate. Thanks for you question.

Hi, Dowelmax offers 3/8 by default and also 1/4, 5/16 and 1/2 as addons. 1/4 is for thin boards, 3/8 for medium boards and 1/2 for thicker projects.... but I don't get the 5/16 purpose, when would you need 5/16?? (it seems redundant to me if you have all the others).

How do you set depth of hole to drill?
@paulsmessyworkshop3 жыл бұрын
Daniel, the depth of the hole depends on the length of the dowel you are using. In this video I used 1 1/2 inch long dowels. In each piece of wood the depth of the hole would NORMALLY be half the length of the dowel plus just a tad of excess glue so in this case the depth of the hole was 3/4" + just a tad, maybe 1/16 - 1/8 of an inch. There are instances where that doesn't apply of course but that is a good starting point.

I bought the Dowelmax jr. since it was the cheapest and just happened by design to be perfect for my project. Like that in this video cover most of the Joints. I am going to be doing a Picture frame for my coffee table and wanted to review how to make the dowels on the 45 degree cuts. But yes basically 2 checks and X for the dowel tap surface this makes sure you know what sides your aligning OFF.. Like the fact the the design is based on ligning up off one surface vs two thus more accurate and consistent. Only issue is seems dowmax sent you everything. There two units the Standard and the Junior. The Junior has the 3 smaller spacers and the angle bracket. The Standard has outer brace so you don't need a C Clamp, but does not have the L Bracket and includes the larger spacers you see when showing how it can fit a 4x4. Also the spacer and spacer rod is included. with the junior instructions are include on how to make a spacer rod with piece of wood and a dowel and how to make spacers from hard wood. The 45 degree shown at the end of the video is optional and the L bracket can be purchased optional. both unit by default are for 3/8 Dowels, You can purchase optional for 1/4" Dowels. Spare drill bits can be purchased also optional. The dril bit is really really nice, it includes the stop ring it has two apposing screws vs 1. otherwise this is a great tool.

Hi Paul, loved your video on the Dowelmax. What length dowels would I use on a beveled 3/4" board?
@paulsmessyworkshop2 жыл бұрын
Jeffery, that is a hard question to answer, it would depend on the length of the dowel you are using. The dowels I use are 1 1/2 inches long plus I leave a bit at the end for excess glue. I make the holes 7/8 of an inch for each hole. If you don't have the room for that much length you can always make the hole not as deep and cut off the dowel to fit. Hope this helps. Thank you for your review Sir. Very well made. I understand the check mark reference for side and edge. But is there reference 'line' to match with a hand drawn pencil line for edge joining two boards together (for making table tops)? What I mean is if drew random pencil marks randomly any where 'across' two boards, can i line up the jig to drill holes on both boards such that the two panels will properly edge join.
@paulsmessyworkshop4 жыл бұрын
MishtiLiving, the simple answer is YES, you can do that. All you need to do is to draw a line across the joint then line up the END of the jig with the line. Drill the dowel from the same hole on each board and the lines will line up perfectly. Try it on a scrap just to practice what I have just explained. Cry when you buy the tool or cry every time you use the tool. There are no real competitors to the dowelmax.

Comes with a DVD?!?! What’s that? It’s 2023 guys I hope there’s an alternative.

Ben, LOL. Believe it or not some us (like me) still have either a DVD player or on the computer. They also have a lot of instructional videos online. If you search KZbin for DowelMax you will also find some good videos. As far as the DVD goes, if you have one hold on to it. Someday some geek will wonder what it is. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

To me, dowl max is comparable to the invention of the wheel

Drake, good comparison. The DowelMax is a well designed jig and easy to use. Great comment, thanks for watching.

No offense, but these reviews and videos should be presented by young people, young carpenters. It will project a fresh look to your company. You know what I mean. Time changes and by doing this you will give a new perspective to an excellent product that will make it attractive to a new generation of woodworkers that won´t consider it a company from the time of my grandparents. I myself, am 70 years old.

Axel, while I don't disagree with you it was DowelMax that contacted me and I was more than willing to help them out. Thanks for your comment and for watching.

I disagree with Axel, I appreciate the variety of perspectives. People do things differently based on their life experience, I wanna hear it all.

To me, a good review applies knowledge and experience to a subject. I would rather hear from someone with a lifetime of work and understanding than what you suggest. Perhaps he could hire a “young person” to edit it and do video angle filming, etc. But what you’re suggesting is dumb and ageist.
