With the paths in No Need to Hide, I'm pretty sure the flashlight in the mines and the mask being under the couch are essentially 'unlocked' by beating the game (once for the former, twice for the latter). Yes, I've gone through the game enough times to figure this out. But that's probably why your paths never changed in your childhood playthroughs.
@ShadowStreak
@ShadowStreak 3 жыл бұрын
That makes sense, I wonder if there's some sort of hint that this is true buried in the game's code. It's just weird that it feels like the odds are also not 50-50 even after that fact. On the other hand, the staggered unlock method is cool because then it really encourages going back to the game multiple times to experience something new across 3 playthroughs instead of getting it all in just 2!

Fun fact: if Carrot is in your inventory in the lab, he’ll pop out of the cape with a funny comment after Sam tries a couple of the potions. The ones I’ve had this happen on were the weather one where he tells Sam that his protest speech was getting wet from the rain, and for costume one where he pops out and says “oh great” after Sam says “off with his head”.

This was a great retrospective on Pajama Sam. I think another reason that he connects the most with young audiences is because kids have active imaginations as well so they can relate to that aspect as well. I love the imagination put into these games and I always loved going into the dancing furniture room to listen to that music as it's still so catchy. On the note of Freddi Fish's voice actress making a cameo in Pajama Sam 3, that reminded me as you pointed out that Jason Ellefson made a cameo in Freddi Fish 1. On a final note, I think it's interesting that you and Brutalmoose have opposite opinions on Pajama Sam 2 and 3. He likes 3 a little more than 2 and for you, it's vice versa.

1:02:00 Wow, I had the EXACT same experience. I played the first game a ton as a kid, but then later my parents got me the third game, on the Playstation for some reason. The Playstation version is exactly the same but a few scenes aren't animated. Like when Sam dances with Miss Celery, in the PS1 version you never actually see the inside of the house. Just watch the silhouettes in the window. I think that made the scene funnier, honestly. Anyways, I could only play the second game as a demo over and over again. I was always curious about it. I didn't play it until WAAAY later when all the games finally released on Steam. I guess it wasn't the same experience at all. lol

A funny story on the You are what you eat demo: I had a disk of a few demos as a kid and never had any of the full games to my knowledge. As a result of not really understanding what demos were, I remember the game being this weirdly compelling horrifying thing to me, where no matter what I did Sam could never escape 'The End' and You are What you eat sort of became this weird threat. It must have stuck with me because I refound the games some 20 years later, from seeing a single frame of Pajama Sam. So yeah, that disjointed basic thing is somehow the most memorable horror story I have ever encountered.

Yay! I saw my comment in the opening! Now on to the "Pajama Sam" games themselves. I loved the environments of the first three games, with the mines and Darkness' literal treehouse in the first one being my most favorite. Unfortunately, while I always completed the first and third games, I don't think I ever got to finish the second one since I remember struggling in certain parts. The Y-Pipe getting stuck in that vending machine was always my biggest issue with it. Never knew about the fourth game until in recent years, so I have no comment on it. As for the arcade games, I think I remember playing the first two, but my memory is kind of fuzzy on them. You did a fantastic job on this video btw! I'm still sorry you had to deal with those computer issues, but I'm glad you found a way to revive this project and deliver it when you could. Also, happy almost Halloween!

This was such an excellent retrospective on games that are so beloved to my heart. Even though Freddi Fish was my first game Pajama became my favourite and No Need To Hide my all time favourite game of the series as well. The editing is superb and your delivery is amazing. It's easy to tell the passion you have for Pajama Sam and Humongous Entertainment in general. Funny enough with how much I played and replayed these games (The original trio of course) I never knew about Carrot taking over as Chairman of the board because I never went to that room multiple times. Other rarely seen dialogues I've found regarding Carrot are if you have him in you inventory when you are in Darkness' lab if you do the one with a rain cloud Carrot complains he is writing out something and he doesn't want it to get wet and the disguise one where Sam is made into a king saying "Off with his head" Carrot pops out and makes a sarcastic comment along the lines of "Oh great, that's the last thing we need". Also through my own peaking around I found out you can have Carrot talk to the elitist trees and he says "LOFTY ELITIST BOURGEOIS PIGS! YOU'RE VEGETABLES, TOO, YA KNOW!" I'll have to get the game again to see this all play out lol. Edit: Also Carrot talking to the Snowflake Inspector and the lost and found with the I.D never knew either! Just shows how much work they put into those little scenarios.

I’ve been enjoying this entire retrospective it’s such a nostalgia bomb for me. I’m going to have to revisit the games soon also Carrot is played by David Scully who also played both Sgt. Johnson (Halo) and Dimitri (Sly Cooper 2 & 3). It’s so cool that Pajama Sam tried to introduce some concepts involving economics a perfect example of Giffen’s Paradox might also involve expensive wines or a more nefarious example NFTs they are not very good products however it’s more of owning a status symbol than something useful thank you Pajama Sam you taught me something about economics!!

I know I'm a bit late to the party (so u might not see this) but thank you again for such an amazing vid!! This series has always been my fave so to see it covered and such detail and with so much passion is amazing!! I find it really interesting that I had a similar experience to you when it came to PJ 1 and randomization however for me it was with pajama sam 2's randomization. It took me years to get the VP paper clip-path (aka wing nuts secondary path) . I wouldn't have gotten it till I replayed the game for fun in high school. I still remember the shock I had when I saw a brand new room added to the office section of worldwide weather. It was almost like getting to play the game again new years later. It was so much fun and actually had me really stumped for a while I remember it fondly. as well the plumber joke goes even further funny enough. so they are plumbs working in the Sam's supposed "internal pipes" as it were, but also since they are plumbs they also all have a plumber's crack XD. Man these games have so much depth and detail lastly, I remember distinctly when I got PJ 4 (yes it is by far the worst in HE history ) that I read on the back of the box that the game advertised itself to and i quote "The adventure changes every time you play" Much how they marketed their old games. However, as we both know this is a lie and sucked so much as a kid. I already didn't like this game for many reasons heck it was so bad I distinctly remember it giving me a headache with how much it bothered me. But that right there is false advertising and I was so upset to go back and play it again and find nothing different! shame on Infograms and their marketing team! At anyrate 3 is my personal fave ( and i attribute it to my love of food and politics lmao) though 2 was my first and will always have a nostalgic place in my heart however 1 has my second fave atmosphere tied with 3 All great games IMO!! thanks again for such a great vid !! I cant wait to see the next when the time comes!

Never knew you finally did a video of Pajama Sam, considering that when I was a kid, I played "No Need to Hide", "You are What You Eat from Your Head to Your Feet" (the music still gets me those nostalgic Toontown/Disney's Magic Artist feels) and "Life is Rough When You Lose Your Stuff". Something that you forgot to mention on the Pajama Sam 4 part; the only parts that are fully lip-synched is the first part of the opening sequence as well as the song. That's it. There's absolutely almost no lip-synching with every character. Also, Pajama Sam 1 is the first Humongous game to actually use and experiment with full lip-sync, although it can still be disconnected at points in the game.

Greetings! I'm a watcher of the Award Show Audit streams you do with PieGuyRulz and heard mention of you making some Humongous Entertainment retrospectives and I got excited because these games were my shit growing up. Pajama Sam in particular was my favorite, with 2 being my favorite of the original trilogy. A big thing I loved about these games was the exploration aspect. There was so much to see and do and things to uncover, and you brought up quite a bit that I had never even noticed before such as Carrot usurping the executive room in 2. I've also noticed that the older I get, the more I see how amazingly the humor in the games has aged. This video was so well made and I'm glad someone took the time to put something like this together. I also like the parts during the 1 portion where you crossfade during a screen to show how it looks in the opposite path. And yes, 4 can piss off with its boring singular path, cheap graphics, generic voice acting (plus that grating sponge voice), and annoying song. The only thing I like about that game at all is (most of) the background music, that's it.

One of the funniest scenes in the second game to me was trying to give the guy who likes apples and applecore. His reaction was too funny. The reason why Pajama Sam 4 came out as it did is a lot more complex than you would imagine. Here are the bullet points of what I know, - by this time, the Atari, Inc executives didn't want to make anymore of the Junior Adventure games, as producing them was far from cheap, plus they wanted to make big games that would, in turn, turn in huge profits. - the executives then allowed the team to make more of them on the condition that they kept production costs low, which they agreed to, resulting in much of the art and animation being outsourced to other companies, which would explain why the lip-synching isn't as good as in the past three games, and why they recasted Sam to Elisha Ferguson (that, and Pamela Adlon was probably very busy by then), - the team, once again, at the behest of the Atari, Inc executives, was using a new game engine (the Python, later dubbed the YAGA) that they were literally learning how to use as they were making the games. As you can imagine, this meant many elements that were present in the previous games were left out And you want to know what makes all of this worse? The crew really did care about wanting to make the game good, but with all of that, plus being put in a time crunch that left them distressed and little time to input more creativity, the game greatly suffered for it when it could've been so much better. It's rather sad that the team went through all of that. Here's a little bonus fact that you didn't mention, Shadow: Games to Play on Any Day was the first game to have the audio rendered in 22khz, whereas every game before it had it rendered in 11khz, which would explain why the audio for the games released in 2000 and 2001 sounded far more compressed and blown out.

I've been getting into Humongous games recently out of curiosity to see how well they played 20 years since I last played them, as well as try out the games I never grew up on. What I had no idea about was the following the games have held recently, so to add to the fun I've been watching your retrospectives after I've completed a franchise, like Freddi Fish and now Pajama Sam. I did not grow up on Pajama Sam, but I do remember the demos from the first two games. I'm not really sure why we never had those games, but we did have a small variety of Putt-Putt and Freddi Fish. Now that I'm almost 30 I played the Pajama Sam series for the first time this week, minus the arcade ones as I'm not as interested. Pajama Sam 1 is an absolute masterpiece and I'd argue it as my favorite HE game now. Feels like I missed out growing up! 2 and 3 were good. Then I played the fourth one. That game took me about 3 sittings to finish. It's absolutely atrocious. I remember you mentioning it as bad in another video, but I didn't think of how bad. JUST as soon as I got in, I watched it freak out in dealing with my 4k monitor and screwing up windows on the monitor next to it. Then I noticed there wasn't a ScummVM splash screen, nor the escape key working to skip cutscenes. Once I heard the sock singing, I just instinctively went "I hate this game already." It's the worst HE game I've played, and among the worst I've ever played. So, so much they got wrong with it.

Fantastic work and man, I really slept on these games. I loved the first game as much as you did as a kid, but never played the rest (or even knew about them) until I was much, much older. The way the adult stuff is handled is super incredible it doesn't feel hamfisted like people do now a days, but fun and imaginative and makes you think about it when you are older, or makes you feel like "They're doing what in this!?". Incredible games, huge shame about the 4th game, more than Putt Putt in my eyes since Pajama Sam is far more clever than Putt Putt. Great work as always, can't wait for Spy Fox. I'm only familiar with Dry Cereal, so it'll be fun to see what I missed.

35:50. THANK YOU even today as an adult when I replay these games, I always get the flashlight and the mask on carrot and the shed. Granted the flash light changed sometimes, but the mask always on carrot. I had to use the debug menue to change it.

Pajama Sam 1 has a hidden debug mode in which you can determine your paths like the other games allow if you tinker with the game files. It's an easy means of getting the routes you couldn't get on a natural playthrough. In my experience the "easy" routes for each item (Flashlight in shed, Mask from Carrot, and Lunchbox in river) tend to have a noticeably higher rate of being chosen naturally over the "hard" routes. I often have to pull teeth to get the Flashlight in the mines (the route I consider canon given the end credits) to appear without using the debug mode to force it that way.

The fourth game should have been about talking to girls. Maybe Sam met one in school, was shy and not sure who to talk to her. At night, he's suck in a world where Pyjama man is here; is shy about asking a girl to be his sidekick. It's a good message on friendship and can be fun to learn. Sounds more interresting than what we got. The title could be: Talking to a girl makes you swirl? I like it 😀

That would also be the first time we would see Sam interact with other people outside of his fantasy worlds besides mom, so that could also give some interesting info about Pajama Sam's lore. Are there more blue-skinned boys, or is Sam the only one?

I once replayed Sockworks because i remembered as a kid one of "Sam's celebration" animations being the "king tut nununu" bit, and then one of the level menu screen animations being that he fell into the machine and got folded up into a sock shape. But I could never find the machine animation bit.....

Jeez. I remember having the disc for "Spy fox, in dry cereal" (or maybe it was one of the putt putt games) and playing a demo for pajama sam through that. It's like a fever dream i'm not even sure if I'm remembering right, but when you had the disc, if would open like a sub window to play spy fox, but display some of their other games and you could play the demos that way. I could be totally wrong here, but I feel like that's what I remember. Either way, fantastic memories.

Re: certain puzzles being weirdly rare in Sam 1, I can definitely vouch for that. When I was a kid, I got the shed and carrot puzzles 90% of the time. I believe the game was intended to "lock" the furniture and mines puzzles until the game had been completed at least once. Perhaps this feature was implemented incorrectly, making those puzzles pointlessly rare? I remember having a similar experience with Putt-Putt 4, where certain puzzles seemed to never trigger (like the history report in the old west) while others seemed to trigger nearly all the time (like the calculator in the old west). Not sure what's up with that.

I played and beat Lost & Found, the last level (100) is Sam's neighborhood, where you ride a red wagon. Love the main theme of the game as well, would always just stay on the title screen for as long as possible just to listen to it. Also, I NEVER knew you could save or load in Pajama Sam 1! The two best in-game references in "No Need to Hide" are: in the door room, you can open one door and come across The Beatles as their "Yellow Submarine" animated selves. The other is, during the Brain Tickler, they ask you "What's the best programming language?" (One of the answers is "Who cares", LOL) I have a feeling that was thrown in as a joke from the programming crew.

Out of all the Humongous games I played, I actually made the least progress with Sam. I only owned Thunder and Lightning Aren’t So Frightening, but never got further than getting either the Automated Snowflake Inspector or Y-Pipe. Meanwhile I beat the three Freddi Fish and two Putt-Putt games I played (I never owned Spy Fox as a kid) I even got more mileage out of the OG Backyard Sports games. I liked Sam, but for some reason I never got far with him. I don’t even remember why.

I enjoyed Putt Putt and Freddi Fish. And when I introduced Pajama Sam to one of my cousins, she was enamored with this series, and the character. It’s also nice to know that compared to many of the other Humongous characters, Sam is voiced by a high profile actress: Pamela Adlon, with her recognizable voice of Bobby, Spinelli, and Otto among her many other roles. And of course Sam gaining a different voice during the Atari era was one of the signs of the studio’s downfall, but I guess him being voiced by EG Daily during the Junior Arcade titles was not bad.
