@MediaNutso2 жыл бұрын
I brought this up in my updated Pajama Sam video, but there is a reason why Putt-Putt's color couldn't be changed in Pep's Birthday Surprise. See, at this point, the team had switched from using the S.C.U.M.M. engine to working with a new game engine called the Python (which was later dubbed the YAGA). However, because it was so new, they were literally figuring out how to use the engine while they were making the games. Because of this, they were left with little time to implement certain elements, and changing Putt-Putt's color was one of them.
@LeafRazorStorm2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't help that the game had a ton of FMV cutscenes (as opposed to in-game animation,) meaning they'd have to incorporate separate video files for every color in the game, which was far too much data for one CD-ROM.

One thing I remember about Travels Through Time (unless I overlooked this detail) is that whenever someone has a problem with something, and Putt-Putt would offer to help, he'd say something else if he/the player already have the necessary item. Such as picking up the coin at the beginning before visiting Firebird. Or when the Blacksmith's dragon is holding onto the lunchbox, Putt-Putt's dialogue would change if there's already a bag of Dragon Food in the glovebox/"inventory".

These videos are so well researched and I'm learning so much about the games that I didn't know before. Thank you so much for putting them together! I am now even more of a fan of HE, and I also hope that one day the old team could come back together to create one last amazing game. Imagine a mash up of all the characters in one!

One thing that annoys me though - the Steam versions of the game don't seem to have multiple locations for items to spawn in, such as Putt Putt's things in Travel's Through Time. They always spawn in the same place for me. They need to fix that!! Same goes for PJ Sam's things in NNTH!!

Like I said before, Putt-Putt was my favorite series from Humongous Entertainment, next to Pajama Sam. Excluding "Dog on a Stick," I remember playing the pre-"Circus" games quite often as a kid. My top three favorite "Putt-Putt" games were "Goes to the Moon," "Saves the Zoo," and "Travels through Time." They all had the most intriguing environments to me and some of the challenges they had made them entertaining. "Travels through Time" is arguably the best for its variations on finding Pep and the items, and I love how they depicted the vehicles of each time period. Btw the dinosaur area is basically an amalgamation of all three periods of the Mesozoic Era (Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous), though it's far from the first to do this. Anyways, another thing I loved about these games was the color-changing aspect, along with the different setups for them in each game (i.e. the garage in "Parade" and "Race," the diner in "Moon"). Although, while I sometimes changed Putt-Putt's colors, I still often kept him in his original purple coat since that was, and still is, my favorite color. Can't wait to hear you discuss Freddi Fish!
@genemelendez81573 жыл бұрын
The idea of games that teach you how to play through level design is mainly associated with Megaman X, but it’s funny to think that Putt-Putt technically did that just one year earlier in 1992.
@329link3 жыл бұрын
Eh, it's only associated with megaman because of egoraptor. The practice has been a thing since before mario.
@melon64443 жыл бұрын
I agree with the idea that Megaman X does this very well, but I have literally only seen Egoraptor associate it with that. I've seen more people associate Mario with that idea due to Miyamoto's quotes on "teaching the player" being his intent on 1-1's level design.

I enjoyed this! I pretty much see eye to eye with you on all your opinions, right down to Travels Through Time and Enters the Race being my favorite two entries, but I still enjoyed watching this through overall! I should mention, one thing you didn't bring up -- in Travels Through Time, not only can you change Putt-Putt's color, you can also change the shade of it either to lighter or darker from the default using that little red slider at the bottom of the paint machine. This is the only game in the whole series to do this. Other than that, I really liked this video! I think you did the series a lot of justice and I can't wait to see the others!
@ShadowStreak3 жыл бұрын

@@ShadowStreak Believe me, when Humongous was my hyperfixation in the early 2010s, I and several others like 831 here found all sorts of little things you wouldn't think would take this long to discover. Like, half the paths in Time are effectively 'unlockable', in that you can only encounter them after you've beaten the game enough times. I think Pajama Sam 1 works this same way. While Race just cycles through 6 combinations based on how much the game is reset. Just interesting to consider they even had a system like that.

As a kid, I remember playing two of the Putt-Putt CD-ROM games I have back in the 2000s and it is still kept in my home for years. It's called Putt-Putt and Pep's Balloon-o-Rama & Putt-Putt Saves The Zoo. Balloon-o-Rama is okay for me in my opinion but I was so bored playing the game. My cousin gave me the game. Putt-Putt Saves The Zoo is my most favourite Humongous Entertainment game and I really loved it. In Putt-Putt Saves The Zoo, the rapids ride is one of my favourite things I've ever enjoyed the most in the game. I kept going there again and again! It was so much fun and so fascinating! Sadly, I cannot play both Putt-Putt games anymore because the times have changed. My parents have to buy a new PC for me. Enters the Race - Honestly considering the last adventure took place across time, seeing things move down to just Cartown again was kinda, 'not as cool' 5. Joins the Circus - The fact that EVERYTHING was always the same, I think except for the wood shape you needed to cut made it less replayable. 6. Joins the Parade - I can respect it as the first game, I just think it's too short and basic compared to the later games. 7. Pep's Birthday Surprise...... I think we all agree this one's crap.

Of all the Humongous IPs, I had the most Putt-Putt games out of the bunch. I didn’t have all of them, but a good chunk. Saves the Zoo was also my first in the series and I still have so much love for it. It may be a one and done, but I find all the unique animations and dialogue opportunities to be incredibly charming. Dog on a Stick was the only Junior Arcade game I ever owned as a kid and it’s very near and dear to my heart. Travels Through Time is my personal favorite Humongous game and to me is the poster child for everything amazing about the company’s library. I even had a copy of One Stop-Fun Shop and I do remember printing out some of the crafts. The music there is also some of my favorite in the series. I also had Joins the Circus, which was the last Humongous game I owned, and while it may be a step down from the previous two titles, I do consider it on par with Saves the Zoo. However, if I had to choose between the two, I’d pick the latter any day. While I have experienced all the Humongous games as an adult, Putt-Putt is still my favorite and will always be an important part of my childhood.

Putt-Putt Travels Through Time is an absolute masterpiece. While "Topiary Creatures" is great and iconic as hell, Time Continuum is just beautiful. I also quote Merlin's "Ahhh yes." often. Weird how some things just latch onto out developing vocabulary. My first experience with Travels Through Time was the demo on Pajama Sam 2 (the only one I had at the time). It wasn't until I met another kid who had all the HE games that I was able to experience it in full. Love it. I've got to be honest, Pep's Birthday Surprise was a game I really wanted to like, particularly because of the story (It's nice to have the entire game essentially revolve around helping out pep, considering his rather lackluster feeling role in the others). While I'd still say, at least as just a viewer of someone else talking about the games, I'd take this over Joins The Circus due to just feeling more unique and having a reason to feel as under developed as it does while having some pretty cool ideas (even if they don't work as well in the final product), you can just feel the pressure the team had to go through, plus I REALLY dislike the voice of Putt-Putt, even if I like the idea of its inclusion.

Talking about the Travels Through Time demo, The intro sequence where Putt-Putt introduces the game, I believe that's Putt-Putt's original voice actor. The recording of the intro must have taken place some time after production on the main game had been completed. And it was really starting to show that the actor's voice was getting deeper at that point. Much more noticeable there than during the actual gameplay. At least that's what I believe anyway.
