Ian McDiarmid (Palpatine) first played that role in 1983 when he was 37 years old. George Lucas saw him in a play where he played a much older character. They had an interview, and he was cast. When Lucas went to make the prequels, he called McDiarmid and said “do you know anyone who wants to play an Emperor?” McDiarmid was about the right age to play the character at that time, and he still pops up here and there in newer Star Wars content. It’s a role he’s aged into. By the time we meet the Emperor in ROTJ, the character is about 90 years old. The actor is now almost 80 - he’s that good

One thing I love while watching all these new first time reactors of the prequels is how you're all able to pick up on a lot of the subtext. Like Anakin's emotional vulnerability, how Palpatine has been giving him the emotional validation that the Jedi weren't, the parallels of Anakin being freed by the Jedi from slavery only to become a slave to the Sith, Anakin's imprisonment by his bad choices literally being embodied by Darth Vader's constricting armour. You know, the things that all the "HARDCORE STAR WARS NERDS" completely missed when they were trashing the prequels when they first came out! It really shows how empathetic readings can be more important then analytical analysis.
@ArcRogerr
@ArcRogerr 10 ай бұрын
33:14 I wish more reactors would consider this. Anakin essentially just ended the war that had nearly torn the galaxy asunder. He probably feels vindicated in his belief that the Dark Side is the only way to get shit done. In his mind, he's a war hero whose ends justified his means, ultimately saving the Republic from both within and out.

I must say that you brought me to tears with this reaction. I have always thought ROTS was Shakespearean level storytelling. Palpatine's plan was flawless. He played a war from both sides, took over the entire banking system, eliminated the only real opposition via those soldiers they trusted and set up his Empire uncontested. He was very patient. A total of thirteen years to achieve his end goals. Watching your reaction to him has been so much fun. I hope you will react to Rogue one next. It takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. And if you really want to dig into this story, watch the Clone Wars series. I'm along for the ride!!

That is very perceptive! There is a fan theory floating around out there that Palpatine really does look like this but uses some sort of Dark Side Sith alchemy to present himself to the public as Senator Palpatine, but after this he drops the “cloak” and lets the public see him as he really is to really believe that the Jedi tried assassinating him

I always thought the story of Anakin's fall to the dark side was more similar to a Greek tragedy than Shakespearean play. It has all the themes 1, trying to prevent a prophecy brings it about 2, the tragic character is convinced they are doing the right thing or being helped and 3, the story ends with their tragic end or the consequences biting them in the butt and now they have to live in suffering.

Time Code: 39:52 - greetings kahla, padmé did not die from child birth or a broken heart. force drain - the darkside ability to suck the lifeforce from others, to stay alive. this can be done, even millions of away from their victims, but it has to be someone a force user has a strong connection with. darth vader, unknowingly, did this with the "knowing" guidance of darth sidious, to padmé when she was giving birth to the twins & that is why she died... but it was not from a broken heart. This was the secret of darth plageus, "who had the ability to keep others from dying". force heal: luke skywalker does the opposite to his knights, if they are gravely injured or sick, on other planets, he can give them force energy, to stay alive, until that person can be treated. luke skywalker, of the new jedi order, is the only force user who can do this, because he's the most powerful force user, ever recorded in 10,000 year history of the jedi. this can be verified in the star wars novels & comics... before the Disney takeover.

I love this story for the major themes. Like you said, it's an operatic high tragedy like Shakespeare. It is a story of warning for individuals and societies to show how something so evil like the empire comes about--slowly and carefully. Evil gains power often not by force, but by election or tolerance. So much to learn from this story.

I love how Luke and Leia have combinations of both parents in them. But if I had to decide which kids was most like one parent....I would say Leia is definitely Anakin's daughter and Luke is definitely Padme's son. Luke, like Padme, loves Anakin despite his obvious flaws. He sees the good in him and believes in him...even when Anakin doesn't believe in himself. Leia, like Anakin, is a natural leader and passionate. People gravitate to Leia and respect her...and she is fierce for those she loves. Yet she has a temper and quick wit. Forgives probably does not come easy to Leia because she is so passionate and kind...that when someone breaks her trust or hurts her emotinoally...I would say it would be wise to stay away from her.

The unfortunate part about anakin....is that he was a slave as a child....then after escaping that he became (somewhat) of a slave to the jedis teachings, which caused a bit of conflict when he fell in love with padme....and that....unfortunately led to him becoming a slave to the emperor....who specifically designed darth vaders suit to be incredibly vulnerable to force lightning. The only time when he was truly free was when he killed the emperor....and then dies after those few small moments of freedom.

"You were the chosen one! It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them! Bring balance to the force... not leave it in darkness!" "I HATE YOU!" "You were my brother, Anakin! I loved you!" Fun Fact: The images of the volcanic eruption on Mustafar is real footage of Mt. Etna in Italy, which erupted at the time of production. Method Actor Fact: George Lucas deliberately made the Darth Vader suit top-heavy (for instance adding weight on the helmet) to make Hayden Christensen not appear "too accustomed" to it in the movie. 501st Legion Fact: The squadron of blue-striped clone troopers that Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) leads into the Jedi Temple is called the 501st Legion, named after an organization of costume fans, also known as Vader's Fist. They make appearances at conventions, parades, and do charity work. Action Star Fact: Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor began rehearsing their climactic lightsaber duel long before it was shot. They trained extensively with stunt coordinator Nick Gillard to memorize and perform their duel together. Ian McDiarmid is doubled by a trained stuntman for his lightsaber battles and more physically demanding shots, such as when Palpatine scrambles away from Mace Windu. As with Sir Christopher Lee, computer effects were used to put the actor's face over the face of the stunt double. McDiarmid stated in numerous interviews that he was pleased that his character, even if not himself personally, was finally involved in some action sequences. For the sword fight between Windu and Sidious, however, the demands for camera angles and close-ups meant that stunt coordinator Nick Gillard had to teach the two actors the entire fight sequence, which was then shot partly with the stunt performers, and partly with Samuel L. Jackson and McDiarmid.

Palpatine’s age varies by two years depending on source material. In the old Legends series, he was 50 by the time of The Phantom Menace, 60 by Attack of the Clones, 63 here, 82 in A New Hope, 85 in The Empire Strikes Back and he was 86 by the time of his first death in Return of the Jedi. He was resurrected in younger clone bodies BEFORE Disney created the Sequel Trilogy, and suffered three more deaths, two at age 92 and the last at age 93. In the new Canon, Palpatine was 52 in TPM, 62 in AOTC, 65 in ROTS, 84 in ANH, 87 in TESB, 88 in ROTJ during his first death and by the time of Rise of Skywalker he was chronologically 119.

I really like your commentaries. So many things I agree with and others I didn’t even see until you mentioned it. I truly enjoyed watching your reaction to Star Wars! Ankin’s story is so sad to me, I feel sorry for the little boy who was a slave and I also feel sorry to the young adult who was lost and unfortunately followed the wrong person because of fear and anger. He never got to be truly happy. This is my favorite movie out of all of the different Star Wars parts.

It’s so refreshing watching someone so sincere go through Star Wars for the first time. Most of us have been here for a while and can get hyper fixated on one trilogy or disparaging of another. Thank you for bringing such a redemptive quality. Please do the sequels!

The sequels are not particularly good. Especially once they started purposely destroying the legacy of the former protagonists like Luke and Han.

That first half hour or so was basically the blueprint for the Clone Wars animated series. The first two seasons are definitely more geared towards younger viewers, but it quickly starts ramping up and has definitely become my favorite piece of Star Wars media.

Great observations! I think it was purposefully done to show that Luke could have fallen like Anakin did if he had taken the same choices. The two are meant to reflect each other, but we know that one of them made the wiser choice.

45:35 Anakin did not bring balance to the force by killing the Jedi. As mentioned later in another SW production, without the Jedi, there could be no balance. He brought balance years later by destroying the Sith (Palpatine). The Sith is what takes the force out of balance.

"Droids not cough". Grievous in fact is not a droid, is a cyborg Kaleesh. Even if modified his only "living" parts are the eyes , the brain and the life organs kept inside the synthetic sack that Obi Wan shoots to kill him

Actually none of those tell the full story. The Eyes of Revolution from Star Wars: Visionaries is the first full telling of how the Kaleesh warlord Qymaen jai Sheelal became a feared and deadly Jedi Killer. Put it simply, 10 or more years before the clone Wars, The Kaleesh and the Huk were at war. Through some manipulations Supreme Chancellor Velarium sent Jedi to assist the Huk without knowing they were the aggressors. The Kaleesh were all but wiped out and the Warlord tried to continue the fight. But Darth Sidious had a bomb planted on his ship. Sheelal's body was soo mangled that he needed a full body prothstetic to survive. Sidious told him the Jedi were responsible for his condition and offered him revenge by becoming The leader of a new droid army. Enraged Sheelal requested that he have a flexible combat oriented body that resembles the Kaleesh god or something like that. He killed his first victim at the First battle of Geonosis (Episode 2). But his first official appearance was in the 2003 Clone Wars micro series. Where he is absolutely terrifying.

Upon release of this film (19 years ago this May), many said(at release and in the years since) that Anakin's turn was too quick. I frequently say that Palpatine spent 13 years preparing Anakin to become Vader. The 3 years of the war are almost responsible as Sidious was. That Mustafar fight wasn't sped up. Ewan and Hayden were REALLY that fast(and if certain projects are any indication, those 2 haven't lost a step). ROTS is my favorite prequel film. Music, visuals, story.....all were and ARE incredible

They also said she died with child. This is why when Darth Vader sent Boba Fett to find the Force user who destroyed the Death Star he was told it was a young kid named Luke Skywalker he was full of rage because he knew Palpatine had lied to him and that Luke Skywalker was his son. Darth Vader knew something because he was so caught up by THE POWER OF THE FORCE in this person that he didn't feel Han Solo coming. Darth Vader was stun by the Power of this Force user.

To answer your question about Palpatine's face turning all messed up. You are correct that IS his TRUE appearance. Even though Sheev (his first name) Palpatine is a human, when someone is deep into using the Dark side, it turns their physical appearance into something horrible and monstrous. However he had been using Sith sorcery to alter his appearance making him look like a harmless old man. His face changed because he was using so much power shooting Dark sude lightning at Mace Windu that he couldn't maintain the "Force mask" and sumce he had already been exposed as a Sith lord, he also probably figured it was no longer necessary to alter his true appearance. Hope that answered your question

Well now you've finally seen how Anakin became Darth Vader! As I've said if Qui-Gon Jinn hadn't died in the first place none of this would've happened. He would've trained Anakin the right way and kept him on the straight and narrow in being a Jedi. He also would've supported Anakin's feelings for Padme too and helped him to save and free his mother as well. By the way a lot more has happened after Ep2 and before THIS movie if you watch "Star Wars: Clone Wars 2003" and "The Clone Wars Series"!

This movie shows why Anakin had to wear his suit as Darth Vader. It wasn't just for looks, it was for survival. Take away the armor and life support systems, and he's a quadruple amputee with 4th degree burns (the kind that go all the way to the bone). Getting his limbs cut off was bad enough, but leaving him to burn to death is what truly sealed his hatred for Obi-Wan

Having fun w/Boogers aside, you're definitely getting SW. "Cheek Bones" is Tarken from Episode 4. Your Shakespeare (Romeo & Juliet / Hamlet) comparisons are interesting. As is your analysis of Anakin (manipulated & a victim of others, but also victim also of his own choices, ambitions & limitations). Good u see fault on both sides (it's realistic). When Padme said in the Senate chamber "This is how Liberty Dies, w/Thunderous applause" - we can parallel wht's arguably happening in our own society (good Sci-Fi looks at the present to warn us of a possible future). In the fall of the Republic (like in our own Republic) we can see & blur Heroes & Villains on both sides (it's confusing). We hv manipulation (from both sides) in our society both dividing & against "the People." Episodes 1, 2 & 3 really looked at the Politics of SW. Looking fwd to your "Rogue One" reaction. Rogue One will really tie things together in the overall story arc (fills a cool gap).

Regarding General Grevious' organs-- You assumed in this reaction that they were not his, but in fact they are. Grevious is a cyborg. Grevious is actually an alien species called Kaleesh, where he was an accomplished war lord amongst his people. His people were at war with another race of aliens, this war was completely unrelated to the Clone Wars. However, eventually Dooku became aware of Grevious' abilities and accomplishments as a leader of war and wanted to take advantage of his skills. So, Dooku sabotaged Grevious' ship and Grevious nearly died in a vicious crash. This crash was so brutal and left him so disabled that, when Dooku's agents found him, they had to remove everything but his essential organs in order for him to survive. Thus, Grevious became a cyborg with a mostly robotic body. This also explains how he eventually became trained to effectively use lightsabers by Dooku, though it is important to note that Grevious is NOT a force user. He's just an impressively effective warrior and tactician. Hope this helps!! Awesome video

When Anakin Confronts Palpatine, and Palpatine says, "Are you going to kill me?'" and Anakin replies, 'I would certainly like to." Well Anakin turned Darth Vader would get that chance under different circumstances some 20 years later, when he helped and protected his son Luke, throwing the emperor over the railing and down the shaft to his death. Why did Palpatine look at R2D2 as to say, '"if you beep another sound, I'm going to spit on you, you little piece of sh_t!"
