Oh let me counts the ways - It's actually not that hard to make a difference - so many options - kudos to you for your whole experiment - - i watch all your videos, and share your posts on facebook, as you know! :) - I walk, ride a bicycle, or ride my badass e-scooter, instead of fossil vehicles. - I converted to fluorescent bulbs long ago, but now have 100% led bulbs in my home, except stove and fridge of course - My new fridge dropped my power bill by 2.5 kwh per day! - I have off-grid solar equipment that I experiment with, not saving a lot yet, but it's a start, and great for outdoor use or during power failures. - I NEVER use a clothes dryer. Freakin' hate 'em. Hang indoors year round, windows open in summer, and helps humidify in winter. - I recycle, recycle, recycle, and reuse everything. - So far i just grow lettuce on my balcony, but better than growing cows lol. - I keep it cold in my house. Put on slippers and a sweater!! and a blanky for watching tv. Use a programmable thermostat! - New efficient furnaces here - huge savings. - Roman blinds - open in the day for passive solar, close at night to trap heat, during winter. Great for custom lighting and ventilation as they open at the top or bottom - kzbin.info/www/bejne/foK4kqaOjcmSapo - Solar panels on our roof for supplementing domestic hot water. Wish I had more money, would be doing PV solar panels and heat pumps :(

While I think that we all need to take a personal responsibility for decreasing our carbon footprint, we also have a responsibility to demand more from the companies that, combined, account for producing 70% of the world’s CO2. We need social action and pressure to change current practices that harm the planet. Thanks for doing this project. I think more people need to see it.

One thing I have noticed over the past year is that science communicators and advocates have stopped saying 'Whether or not you believe humans are causing climate change...' and are now just flat out saying 'Humans are the cause, we are the problem.' While I understand why they said that (and I was one of them) I am glad for this change. We are going from a mentality of 'Something should be done' to a no bullshit attitude of 'If we do nothing, people you know will be hurt' It's a bit more gloomy, but the time for inclusiveness when it comes to Climate Change has long since passed.

not including people in the debate because they disagree with you will lead to stonewalling efforts because they feel like they won't be listened to otherwise. just look at the paris accords. they said "this is how it's GOING to be and you have NO CHOICE in the matter." and trump rejected them outright. aggression doesn't change minds. a good opening to debate is always to hear out your opponents argument and let them hear yours. keep asking followup questions and if they're wrong they'll change their own minds. the time for inclusiveness should never pass because the end of inclusion is the beginning of conflict.

Did you try running this same experiment without you in it, as a control? Under cloud cover, photosynthesis wouldn't be running full-tilt, and it's plausible that the soil bacteria is already consuming a lot of oxygen. Also, you imply that talking (or breathing harder) uses up O2/produces more CO2...I would argue that it doesn't. Merely exchanging air more frequently (ie. breathing harder) doesn't actually cause your body to produce more CO2. Interesting experiment nonetheless!
@ScopeofScience

I did find that, in general, the more I did/spoke the higher my heart rate was, and since that is linked to my metabolism I'm pretty sure it would have a direct impact on the amount of CO2 I exhaled... Would have loved to run that control, but I designed the experiment to have the thing seal from the inside :/ Definitely agree that the soil has a big impact. Originally wrote a script titled "Its Complicated" which went into all of the other variables like that... but I didn't want to complicate it too much for viewers... Anyway, thanks!!

One thing that I've noticed never seems to come up in these discussions is population. Human population, worldwide, has been increasing rapidly, and shortly after WWII it exploded. If you think of it in terms of raw units, each human exhales a specific amount of CO2 with each breath, and that amount has increased proportionally with the population. Each human also consumes a specific amount of food (including meat) requiring cultivation of those resources to increase proportionally, which has caused a proportional decrease in world wide wild spaces (where plants consume and STORE Carbon, vs agriculture, which may absorb it in the short term, but releases it again when eaten).

Cool and witty demonstraton. Stating "I risked my life" is quite a bit of hype. Not quite like fighting a house fire or taking on a live gun fight to keep your neighbors safe. As you said, with a single cut you're safe but there are thousands of people in occupations that can't say the same.
@NA-yq4pe

Well yes it's kinda the same situation, fire fighters and soldiers chose their job voluntarily and they could resign anytime they want. That's the "cutting" part for them. But true, when they're active somewhere it's harder for them to just escape, although I reckon it's easier for fire fighters than for soldiers
@NA-yq4pe

Also, depending on where you live, "taking a gun to keep your neighbors safe" is rather rare, most western countries don't have any wars going on in their land or borders, so you're not really protecting your neighbors

The trouble with CO2 is that its not just a greenhouse gas, the oceans absorb some of it and basically buy us time, but at the cost of acidification, and as demonstrated in this series CO2 affects our own biology as well. (I didn't know much about those effects until seeing this series and the part on Tom Scott's channel.) Methane is about as bad, as its about 4 times stronger as a greenhouse gas, and then breaks down into CO2.

I take small steps that reduces somewhat the impact on the environment. I try not to waste food, avoid overeating, stay healthy so I don't need medication that then later gets into the environment, I take public transportation, manage my water supply, use public transportation, keep my stuff for a long time, use second hand stuff, repair and reuse things. And report on problems environment, as well as picking up trash that can be eaten by animals. I have had ideas of having lots of plants inside as to avoid getting to much contamination from cars, industry and such inside, but with the amount needed it feels unrealistic. However the plus side might be that I can open tge Windows more rarely. No air conditioning or purifier.

I wonder if the cube could have been more tolerable if the humidity was better controlled. You could have a small air conditioner to dry the air while not affecting the co2 levels. I feel like that could have been a more accurate representation of the effects of co2.

Went vegan a couple years ago for ethical reasons and just recently learned about the environmental and health benefits. The plants don't seem to be a reliable enough way to filter oxygen. I was thinking of doing something similar, but with a quicklime based scrubber in there, to simulate a Mars habitat. High CO2 levels could be handled by absorbing air in the box and either releasing it outside or storing it. To increase levels, do the opposite. Mostly I think you just need more plants and fast growing plants, like seedlings or algae. Anything that can use CO2 without light is good too.

I feel as if the US could do a better job with public transportation to reduce climate change and CO2 production. I don’t have the option to take a train or bus to work because they aren’t available and I have to drive. This causes more people to drive and emit CO2. If the US was to add more public transportation, we could cut our CO2 emissions dramatically.

If we went forth with the green new deal (which is outlandishly unaffordable) we would only change the the temperature of the earth LESS than 1 degree over the next 100 years. Asking how thats possible..? Because the US is only a fraction of the problem, think about china, india, europe. They are way more massive than us. Right now, it is not within our interest to make drastic changes to ourself. We have to get everyone on board first. And by then we will have already colonized mars.

@@cosmicbro1973 A quick google search said that only China is a bigger polluter than USA, and Europe by a small margin (but also consider that the population in Europe is about twice as large as that of USA). If we look at per capita USA is one of the worst. 1 degree is pretty significant if the overall rise is estimated at 6. Not saying USA has to take immediate drastic steps (would be prefferable, but I get that it's complicated), but at least take some responsibility. If we did the green new deal, which bans and limits EVERYTHING with fossil fuels, the most extreme climate change bill possible; we would only reduce the temperature of the earth 1 degree..... over...... ONE HUNDRED YEARS. Wake up, climate change is only a “problem” because democrats want votes. They are fear mongering, how many times have they said “we have ten years left” over the past 30 years? It’s ridiculous and completely false. Even President Obama (who has spoken on this just like every democrat politician) just bought a multi million dollar house on the ocean. Why would he do that if he really believed climate change would destroy his house

There is one thing, and one thing alone that can fix all that ails us with regards to the climate. Less people. Less people need less resources, and less resources used means less of an impact on the environment (pollution) and the climate (CO2 and methane production). If you want less cattle, have less people so we don't need as many cattle to feed everyone, so we don't need as many crops (taking habitat away from other creatures), etc. You don't have to become a vegan, eat steak if you want, just have smaller families for a few generations. Get the population of man down, and all of our issues go away. Doing anything else is just treating the symptom and not fixing the cause.

I see a few errors to your experiment. 1. Water is not bottled in nature, it is sitting out in a wide container which causes evaporation including oxygen which permeates in the atmosphere. 2. The trees are tall in nature, which create shade. 3. Pine trees do not product oxygen as much as other plants. 4. Rain and snow have oxygen in them. 5. if you used those lights efficiently and pointed them at the plants you would have them producing oxygen at night. 6. One earthquake, one fire, one meteorite crashing creates more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than cows farting. 7. Telling people to plant more trees is the solution, it has been shown to change entire ecosystems.

Actually modern cars typically are more in the 200g/km of Co2 range. Many old cars were actually way below this as well (like Citroen CV) as they were small and light. As for animal husbandry emissions -> This has already been solved but industry is very slow to follow. 1) Algae in feedstock -> Reduces cow methane output by like 95% 2) Managed grazing -> This has been shown to allow dying areas / desertification to be stopped and regrow (re-greening), as the animals move around the area they roll over the top level of soil, poo there and thus fertilizing etc, which kickstarts re-growing in that area, but you got to manage this, not too many animals per area. The good news is that it's not a space issue as desertification can be stopped this way and land reclaimed for productive use. Maths has been done -> the regreening of areas would vastly more than suck all human made Co2 while producing more than enough to feed people. There is documentaries and TED talks about this, just look for "regreening desert" etc keywords. On top of that, you don't need to buy the animals feedstock they will live off the land with their natural diet. The funny thing is; This is exactly how animals used to be in the wild, and the reason they cannot do this anymore is because we don't allow them to, even for those few wild animals out there there is too many barriers to move etc. It is simply closing the loop again.

We need to eat more fish. Fish is a great source of proteins and fats. And we can do this sustainable within the confines of our cities. We can grow vegetables from the wastes of this fish, and we feed our fish from our own waste. This is the short end of the story, but we can do this. We have taken the land mass larger then the size of Africa for our agricultural land. I believe we can give it all back and feed us a better diet while doubling or tripling our population. That science is Aquaponics. It comes in different flavors, and there's still a lot of be discovered. But if you have not heard about this yet Kurtis, you might find that subject quite interesting.
