EEVBlog recently posted a video on how to use a Multimeter to discharge the capacitors, its a lot easier than using the resistor in the video. It's worth checking out the video.

As a tech for tube amplifiers, I get lit up every now and then. Sometimes there’s a bit of storage when you least expect it. It’s a shocking experience. Switch modes store between 170 to 340 volts. I made a discharge wand with a brass rod and 470 ohm 10w resistor. It’s slow. Y’all be careful with the small resistors. Could be a shocking experience.

Phil, Wouldn't it be great if you could just snap your fingers one more time and the console is fully repaired? Actually I am learning a lot from you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I learned yesterday from another You Tuber that if you set your multimeter to ohms and measure across the live cap that it will drain the cap fast without damaging your meter. After doing that then check voltage and it should be drained enough to be safe. That You Tuber was EEVblog.
@enigmaticmfАй бұрын
Yeah, but someone also commented above that he thought that very same thing and it blew up his meter. I'm guessing it all depends on which meter is used.
@DracoMcGuyverАй бұрын
@@enigmaticmf Be sure to check the rating of the meter. The voltage on his cap must have been super high. I have never had a problem even my cheapest meter.

Hi Phil you know you can asfely dsicharge capacitor with multimeter. I do it years so . I did it when I worked on tv tube sets. Set your multimeter few seconds on ohms mode or if you lovz mode you can use it. Or use lamp bulb.

You need to focus more on replying to customer's emails from your website than creating clickbait videos. Clickbait headings on your content will get you nowhere eventually. People are sick of these. PS5 PSU REPAIR would have brought you much more just like customer communications will. Thanks for the video.

It takes me 15 seconds to write a title. It takes me several hours every day to respond to emails. I repair things, make videos, sell parts and look after a family including a disabled child. Cut me a little slack dude. Yeah I'm a few days behind on emails, but I'll get to them eventually. It's also Christmas, the busiest time of the year., and my customers find me through youtube. Everything works together or not at all, so I have to make videos to get emails in the first place...

A Tip for Cod3r; Most all multimeter's since the late 80's have safety resistors on the Ohms meter. If you hold the probe on the power caps and turn the meter to Ohms, it will drain the caps out right quick. No need to play fiddly games with an external resistor.

In the UK we have the benefit of plug sockets with on/off switches. You could benedit from this by having the mains cable powered off when plugging into the power supply under test, which would be much safer for you, instead of powering it on with a "Hot" lead. Secondly, you should invest in a 1:1 isolation transformer (not a variac) if you are going to continue in investigating power supply faults. You are less likely to damage yourself by allowing the ground side of your test equipment from becoming live!

How many mistakes to handle a switching power supply: You really risk your life 1) you power it by inserting the cable 2) you use a 1/4 w resistor to discharge the capacitor (I didn't understand the value) 3) you insert the resistor with a metal clamp from above A) buy an isolation transformer Vin = Vout B) on the input put a 100W light bulb in series with the transformer C) on the output insert a light switch D) prepare two tips with a 20W resistor E) discharge the capacitor on the solder side

@AutismusMaximus128 күн бұрын
No grudge, I just stating the obvious. First it makes financial sense (even if he is scamming), second he has the knowledge as shown, third he has the spare parts, even sells them... I like Phil as much as the next guy, but I wont let it slide, if we don't react to the wrong, the wrong will always be wrong and get worst, wrong needs to become right, because of letting it slide so often, the world is in the spot that it is.
@Crust9927 күн бұрын
@@AutismusMaximus1 I accept your point in general about spoting the bad . Just in some cases it better to change a whole part rather than changing a whole lot of separate components. If that's something something I was working on and if I the customer confirmed for a whole part replacement and if a fault happen to occur there is a whole lot of better offers too that I can offer the customer.
