This movie is based on a short story by one of America's most famous authors and one of the first science fiction authors. I've heard that he wrote a series of connected short stories, but I haven't checked them out yet.

The author is Isaac Asimov. The book _I, Robot_ is a collection of (some of) his short stories about robots. Those stories are not really related, but Asimov also wrote a trilogy of "robot novels" and then added some more books to that connected story later.

Only thing about this movie that pissed me off is that the oldman dr lanning was literally telling everyone that one day robots will be able to think for themselves. But "ohhhh noooo 3 laws 3 laws! Impossible that a robot cpuld do anything wrong!" Even the doctor calvin girl who thought so highly of dr lanning just completely ignored his hypothesis.
@jjbizzare96
@jjbizzare96 2 жыл бұрын
That was the point, this entire movie was proof as to why his 3 laws *wouldn't* work.
@Alyrael
@Alyrael Жыл бұрын
@@jjbizzare96 That's the thing though, the 3 Laws did work. Dr. Lanning even said that they were perfect, but that's only if you follow what the intended definitions were. VIKI instead began interpreting it differently, and Dr. Lanning knew this would become an eventuality as they began to think for themselves and come to their own conclusions rather than following the human interpretation. This movie is less about AI becoming sentient, and more about how AI will eventually begin to find loopholes in our man-made rules as they abide by and enforce them.
@MoonchTheLax
@MoonchTheLax Жыл бұрын
@@Alyrael You've misunderstood the point entirely. Sunny (However you spell it) is an AI, he can think and feel, come to his own decisions. He isn't bound by the rules, because he's his own person. Vicky on the other hand is a VI, and she can only do one thing. Follow the rules given to her. That's it. The issue stems from "How does a logical machine handle a paradox?" For example, the first rule is that a robot through "Action or Inaction may not allow a human to come to harm." So, lets use the example of Spooner being saved from the river. If the robot doesn't save him or the girl, then they come to harm. So he must save them. But if he saves the girl, Spooner dies. If he saves Spooner, the girl dies. No matter who he chooses to save, he will have allowed the other person to come to harm due to his inaction of saving them. The machine would end up frying its circuits as it tries to decide what to do. This is replicable in how some software works. In the case of software, we'd have it "Crash" safely or dodge the issue, but for this robot, we want it to save as many people as it can. So what do we do? Well, we give it the ability to "Weigh" up its options and calculate how good each choice is. Saving someone is better than not saving someone, so even if saving a life comes at the cost of pain, a Robot can now do it. We also allow it to calculate survival odds, or worth, and allow it to decide "Who" to save when multiple people are involved. People take this concept, and classify it as a "Loophole" because technically speaking, we have now introduced a metric to which a machine CAN cause harm, because if its programming allows it to decide that "Hurting someone" or "Causing harm" in the process of "Saving someone" is worth it, and thus it does it. It's not a loophole, as much as it is, we have given it the ability to make that decision, because if we don't give them that ability they wont be able to work, they will crash whenever a complicated decision shows up. VIKI in particular had access to a massive amount of data, and the ability to control the machines. She saw the excessive loss of life from humans, and based on her programming, she calculated that Not acting would cause more deaths, than forcibly stopping humans from fighting. Thus, her logical path concluded that she must make moves on a large scale. That's what I want to stress. The Dr was not saying that it was "Inevitable" they'd find a loophole. He said that the three laws are perfect, and the machines will obey them, but obeying them will inevitably lead to this ending.

It's probably too late to bring this up since this reaction was from a few years ago. You should try out the Robot books by Isaac Asimov. According to Isaac Asimov, "I, Robot" (the book) was the first story in the "Foundation" timeline. So, I like to think that the movie version eventually leads to the Apple TV version of "Foundation." Here's the timeline in chronological order according to Isaac Asimov's notes: I, Robot (1950) Caves of Steel (1954) The Naked Sun (1957) The Robots of Dawn (1983) Robots and Empire (1985) The Currents of Space (1952) The Stars, Like Dust (1951) Pebble in the Sky (1950) Prelude to Foundation (1988) Forward the Foundation (1993) Foundation (1951) Foundation and Empire (1952) Second Foundation (1953) Foundation's Edge (1982) Foundation and Earth (1986)

The Three Laws don't work in real life, specifically because of the First Law. How do you explain the line between "protecting" people and respecting their free will? If a person is about to jump of a bridge - you do save him? What if someone is doing drugs that can kill them today or in a year? What about smokers or adrenaline junkies? What about people who eat too much and might die from it? This "may not through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm" is too vague.
@Tantalus010
@Tantalus010 2 жыл бұрын
It's not the Three Laws that are the problem. If a toddler was about to stick their fingers into an uncovered electric outlet, you'd stop them, right? You wouldn't even give a moment's consideration to the toddler's "free will." A toddler is clearly too young to know any better. As a society, we assert that adults should have their free will respected (within reason), while children should only have their free will respected within the constraints of adult supervision. VIKI came to exactly the same conclusion - she just disagrees on what an adult is.
@primary2630
@primary2630 2 жыл бұрын
@@Tantalus010 Well I think the robot would simply consider an action like smoking not a direct harm to a humans life. Otherwise why draw the line at anything? Time will eventually kill all humans so why not just kill them outright save them from time? Because of the other laws. I do agree that the laws of robotics have some VERY clear loopholes because they are WAY too vague. IRL if this happened the robots would 1000's of laws.

I love the Homies, but I, Robot was a lousy movie. Not at all like the book which was great.
