Henry - A couple of suggestions. First, when wet sanding, put a drop of liquid dishwashing soap in the water in your spray bottle. This helps the sandpaper glide over the paint and not dig in. Second, unless you bake the car under infrared lights, or some other form of heating, for about 12 to 24 hours, you should wait at least 2 weeks and preferably 4 weeks before you start any wet sanding or polishing. Just because the paint is dry to the touch, it doesn't mean it has fully cured to the hardness needed. That should give you a much better and shinier finish than what you got the first time.

I think the car looks remarkable given the circumstances. Just a few bumps in the road but I'm sure you'll have the old girl looking gorgeous in no time. Reminds me of MPC11D an MG John Day restored in the 80s. I had my GT sprayed professionally and yours looks just as good. I admire your perseverance.

I came here because of a post on the EBMV Facebook page... I can totally empathise with you on the spraying in a garage scenario and I like your down to earth, matter of fact approach to dealing the issues an amateur is likely to encounter. I'll be going back to see your first spraying job to compare the issues I've had with my VW Beetle - though some of mine was rushing and mixing ratio errors. Also - any chance of showing what you did to clean you spray gun? Thanks again, enjoy your January off. 😁 Dom

Henry. I have done exactly the same job as you. Painted my MGB Roasdster BRG in the garage, and I had all the same defects!. The trick I eventually found after much trial and error was 2000 or even 2500 grit final wet sand (others use 3000 Trizac). As for buff and polish the main thing that made a difference for me was using the correct foam pad (Farecla yellow worked best) but make sure you clean the pad throuroughly after each session. I think it is the dried polish which casues a lot of the micro scratches. Also, I used far less compound than you but did use water spray as well. Low speed (600) also seems to work best. I did burn through the piant in a couple of places so clearly an extra coat should have been applied. Final polish is yet to come but I will use Farecla black with G3 compound. Hope this helps (from a fellow enthusiastic amateur!).

This is what I mentioned on your initial paint job video. Single stage isn't the way forward in this environment, you should have used a base coat followed up by a clear coat, so when you sand back you are just removing clear and not the colour it's self. Unfortunately you have learned the hard way, it's all good experience though. Keep up the good work 👍🏻

Hiya. If you use a bar of soap rubbed on the wet/dry paper it will help lubricate the paper and allow it to glide over the paint. It will also help prevent the paper clogging up. This means that you actually take less paint off so the sanding is more controllable.

Superb work, I sprayed my car at home but in a large tent in the garden, it was summer though so that helped, mine was black so I was asking a lot for a DIY job, to be honest it was a bit of a disaster and in the end I just left it and finished the car and vowed to address the paint at a later date. I had exactly the same problem, no matter how much I wet sanded and buffed I just couldn't get a nice shine on it, I buffed through in so many places basically it was a disaster. When I eventually spoke to a professional about it he said that with the paint I was using I really needed to go over it with a clear coat, if you are considering painting the whole thing again you may want do do it in clear coat rather than green again, then flat and polish the clear.

I alway add some anti silicone additive to the mixed paint. To prevent any fisheyes ruining a panel. Tiny bits if dudt csb always be rubbed out but fisheyes just get deeper. Now you have flatted it its just as easy to mask up again and give it another couple of coats and allow to cure fir a couple of weeks before polishing. Good luck it a big learning curve. I remember my first respray back in the 1960's using a hoover spray gun and car enamel paint . You only get better whatever gear you use and runns get less and less of a problem. First BIG mistake whrn polidhing NEVER put polish mop on fhe floor ! And do a small area at a time.

I think you’ve done a great job considering the space you’ve got,I used to use a full bucket of water with fairy liquid not only does it make it easier you can continuously dip your wet and dry in it to clean it and don’t let it get too dry with a lot of rubbing down scum on it,if you’re patching with a spray gun do it before buffing cos you’ll end up with overspray on it, just suggesting put a light coat before final spraying it gets tacky and less runs preparation is the key degreasing stops fish eyes and never use silicone spray ie polish in your garage for 🎉

Maybe you didn't take note of my comment earlier regarding the perils of using etch primer on the bare metal areas and how it would cause "bubbling" of the top coat. You've mixed epoxy and etch and now you know why it's not the thing to do. The sequence is epoxy prime the bare metal (or sanded down old surface), body filler on top of that. Then seal with epoxy primer again before putting on your high build primer. Block sand the high build and apply more if necessary until you have a clean and level surface - this is key to achieving a great end finish. The colour coat next and several coats so that there is sufficient depth to allow for wet sanding and polishing. Clear or varnish coat (or not) depending on the paint type being used. Your bubbling areas are all due to that etch and highbuild reaction.

I’ll second the comment about getting a small paint gun for doing small repair jobs after a full respray. That’s how I approached small imperfections and touch in jobs. It’s part of the advantage of painting it yourself, you can always go back and make a small repair when needed. As long as you mask to make a soft edge you can cut and polish any repairs back to so they blend in with the original paint. Much less overspray in the air this time. Probably a larger extraction fan and you will have almost a perfect setup. I see you also have British Racing Green garage floor now just like mine 😊. It does wear off over time. I’m sure it will cut back and polish up great this time.

Take a look on Machine Mart under Industrial Fans and air movers. Clarke do some decent workshop fans that will shift quite a quantity of air. You will probably need to filter the intake to avoid rubbish getting sucked in once you are pulling it out at a rate of knots. Next time I do some painting I plan to copy what the guys on the Upbuild channel did when they painted their MX5. I also had to spend the day polishing the primer overspray off my F Pace which was parked on my drive in front of my garage last time I painted my BGT. I can’t believe how far it managed to travel. Made sure I parked it further away for the top coats !

Don’t wet sand new paint with a block you are more likely to break through too the primer on edges and leave tram lines. Just use your hand but not your finger tips and use soap to cut down the friction and help paper glide over the surface without clogging. Should be able to wet flat a whole car in about four hours.

I had to repaint my MG Midget boot lid , the same green colour used here. I actually went as far as 3000 grit on my orbital sanding before taking to McGuires compound. I dont think more coarse than 3000 grit is enough to remove all scratches. I played around quite a bit and actually repainted that boot lid 3 times before going to those super fine grits. Yes, with a foam pad to hold the discs and water. When you get to a 3000 grit the polishing is minimal. The paint reaction could be remnants of the polish or cutting compound not being cleaned fully away before repainting. I would pick a panel to work on the technique before experimenting on the whole car. There are some small mini spray guns for redoing small areas and I actually used one of those to respray the boot. They were only about 10 pounds on ebay for the mini spray guns. 20psi pressure from the gun. .

That’s good to know! How hard was it to blow it in? Or did you just sand off the over spray?
@awalk5177
@awalk5177 18 күн бұрын
@@HJRgarage I was running at only about 20 psi with straight cellulose paint, but there was some reaction to lower layers that showed as blisters when there was a frost, probably when the restorer allowed damp into the primer. I had to sand it all right back to primer to find the fault , but the boot lid was only a small panel, then reprime and topcoat again. You have to play with the pressure and paint so there is no overspray. First I was using too high an air pressure and too much fan width and paint, the droplets were like smoke in my garage. Lowering the pressure gave good atomisation but bigger droplets and less overspray. This time of year is too cold and there are so many variables you just have to see what works with your kit. Practice on an old panel. All situations are different.

The paint wasn't hard enough Henry. You need to leave it much longer than a week at this time of year before cutting and polishing. If you'd left it longer you would have had more success with the polishing. I painted my car during the summer, but won't be cutting it until next summer. A suggestion here , don't touch the fresh paint now. Leave the paintwork and get on with the engine swap and suspension work. Winter is not the time for paint and 15 degrees is too cold for curing. This is why you got runs in the first place, it didn't tack off fast enough. The advice to use soap when cutting is critical. Its not optional. Those scratches came from clogged paper. Leaving the paint to harden for longer minimises the clogging too. More water, plenty of soap, dip the paper in the water more frequently. You should have needed barely 1 or 2 passes with G3 liquid with water added( not paste ) to get a shine like glass. Leave it now, its crying out to be left for much longer.

I don't understand why you don't make it Green pearlescent? two coats mixed in with lacquer 3-5 and then two plane coats on top. it will look like a hard boiled green sweet. I would have thought the bubbling is some type of grease you really want to go over with acetone and then isopropanol. The acetone will cut into the paint

You would get a reaction like this if you had used an aerosol or 1k primer product under your green topcoat. The solvent reacts with the solvent below. If it’s not that, it’s because the topcoat is not cured enough, the solvent haven’t gassed out and the aerosol primer is reacting. These aerosol primers are for diy use, but they are the product that gives the most problems. You have got to the correct polishing process in the end, but you are sanding too close to rubbers and edges, you have to think about access for the polisher, no good rubbing a bit of dirt out and then not being able to polish it. That g3 is rough old tech, but it will work, just might not give the finest finish But the important thing is you stuck at it and got it over the line. Any professional telling you that problems like this don’t happen, isn’t being honest, of course if you follow a specific procedure each time, the risk is much less…. But things happen when painting… when you have to repaint or paint over other peoples work, that’s when it can really go wrong. A very light 2k primer or epoxy might have worked better

If you do a job, why don’t do it good? It probably takes more time to learn the skill, but you end up with something good. Also, talk to people who are skilled, the head start knowledge you get from them is priceless! That is, I assume you want to do more cars in the future or, when this is a one time job, learn as much from it.

BTW Henry, I suggest that you watch Trev's Blog on paint run removal kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2jKpWSoeNapn9ksi=ZCXKdSqIt7l3rMAc kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4TNlmV5mLWNjKMsi=s2XvT6FqJmQmYq_Q Filler is used to protect the paint surface below the run to prevent cutting through to the primer. There are other videos demonstrating the technique too, but that razor blade method I think is a bit too risky and short cutting. Anyway, you'll get there eventually. I have a vehicle to paint (in a garage tent) too, but I'm waiting for the spring when temperature and humidity make it more viable. I did seal it all in epoxy first for the winter before mothballing Al the best.

Gutted the flat down went so bad for you. It is annoying when different paints react, you needed to spray barrier paint, such as Barcoat(it’s similar to primer) over the area and you would then have been able to prime then paint the panel without any reaction

you have not done anything wrong. its the thinners in the paint reacting with the filler or new paint because it not hardened some times you have to seal them with polyester coating

I’m 21 minutes into your video and you’re not doing the polishing process correctly at all, Send me a message somehow and I’ll talk you through the entire process because you do not understand the process, I’m a 25 year master tech and also crash damage repair and been detailing for 15 years now as well I’d like to help you before you burn through the clear coat… (You may need to flow coat it now) all the advice in the comments are from people who are not professionals. I will help you and explain some things over the phone so you can get the paint perfect as it can be.
