Really good channel to eyes on, like the way you use labour only - we recently replaced a roof to a summer room / breakfast room, quotes from companies ranged from 6,500 to 9,000 - we purchased all materials for just over 800, then labour only another 1,000, so massive savings by doing it that way (like you we had to discard of all the old roofing and bits - 4 tip runs and bingo all cleared).

Wow that’s a huge saving. Well done!

Gravel boards is not about making the fence sturdier. It's to prevent (reduce) the fence panels rotting on the bottom. Because in a few years what happens is you have a perfectly sound fence panel on top, but it's rotten at the bottom due to direct ground contact, rains splashes dirt on it etc.

I like close boarded, but my preference because of the sloping site would be to have the top of the panels all level at the same height, without the severe step change up top, especially as this will be viewed from near the house, variable height gravel boards timber or stained concrete at the panel base to allow the fence panel tops to be inline and level, aesthetically better looking and pleasing.
@NicksHomeRenovations Жыл бұрын
I agree but that would be impossible here. The difference between the fence at the top of the garden and bottom differs by at least half a metre so you would have huge gravel/wooden boards. This sort of thing mostly only possible on a new build flat garden!
@john_smith1471 Жыл бұрын
I’m a convert to close boarded fence panels, strong, sturdy and looks good, especially in our sometimes blustery and stormy weather, seems to be the standard choice now but 10 years ago waney edge fencing seemed the first and main choice.

Nick not using Concrete Gravel Boards will the fencing not deuterate at the bottom more quickly? Looks nice though
@NicksHomeRenovations Жыл бұрын
Yes always the risk but I think gravel boards are unsightly!
@megaman2016 Жыл бұрын
Should have at least put down a sacrificial wood board so you can replace that instead of the panels when it rots
@barryford7135 Жыл бұрын
I would have gone for concrete gravel or a board to keep those expensive panels off the ground.
@john_smith1471 Жыл бұрын
@@NicksHomeRenovations I spray stained my concrete gravel boards same colour at the panels, they disappear and blend in fine, I’ve also used treated timber as gravel boards.

Great work and a useful video. I'm renovating my bungalow and need a new fence. Nearly four large for a fence tho, what timeline are we on again? I'm still buying pickled onion space raiders for 10p. It's grim up north.

I’m fascinated, as usually the right hand fence (looking from the front of the whole plot and facing the front door), is your neighbours’ responsibility, the left hand yours, been the same in every house I’ve owned ..... wonder if that’s just a south of England convention? (hmmm I remember it was the same in Cumbria too though)
@NicksHomeRenovations Жыл бұрын
Have no idea but it’s always been right hand side where we are!
@john_smith1471 Жыл бұрын
You can still put a fence up on any side if the posts and panels sit in your garden, it doesn’t look like that old fence would have been replaced anytime soon.

Question: why did you have to do/pay for the fence if it's shared between you and the neighbour? How does that work?
@NicksHomeRenovations Жыл бұрын
The common thing in the UK is you are responsible for the right hand fence as you look down the garden. So I was responsible for this one and my neighbour on the left, the left hand side. I am also responsible for the back fence too but that can depend on what the title deeds say.
@robertt4176 Жыл бұрын
I was always told you were responsible for the left side

Although it’s not the law, etiquette says you show the ‘nice face’ of the fence towards your neighbour not on your own side. Sadly it seems folk don’t give a dam anymore. I work in a lot of houses is really rare now anyone cares. The idea is one side of your fence is less appealing, and the other side is the good side. My neighbour just had their fence done of course I got the bad side, used to get the good side from the old fence. Not end of the world still looks pretty good. That was in the front. Out the back a different neighbour again had put up fence years ago the ‘wrong way round’. All the posts and beams are on my side so they can’t do any maintenance, not that they would lol. My own fence I have the ‘bad side’, so I have two bad sides! Ah well :(
@NicksHomeRenovations Жыл бұрын
Ah no! I was always told you give yourself the good side, as the neighbour will give you their bad side, so you have one of each…which makes sense to me as if you are paying you should see the nicer side!
@Anakinuk007 Жыл бұрын
@@NicksHomeRenovations - well a landscaper will tell you that they want the customers fence to look the best for whoever is paying. That logic makes perfect sense. And yet most of the time, those same landscapers if doing say all three sides of your fence would face it all towards you and not care about neighbours. Years later when fence starts falling apart it’s far more awkward to ask permission for access into their garden to fix your fence, when if you had all the posts and beams etc wouldn’t be an issue. Concrete posts are less of an issue though. It’s just etiquette and polite to give yourself the bad side, and in theory the neighbour on other side will do the same. Most people follow that ethos have a look around (or used to). But like I say, many of todays trades will just do what they want they don’t care about your neighbours.
